      Saves - plural.
      How he got his fingers to that ball for the second one I have no clue, especially considering he was on the floor and that it was from Lorimer, who was usually so deadly.

      Geoff Poole
      I have never seen a better goalkeeper, Schmeichel as good as but look at the team he had in front of him. Monty pulled off these type of saves week in week out but cameras were not at every game in those days. Bob Stokoe said it was England's loss as much as Monty's that he never gained a full international cap. Monty was named in the England team 1969 to play against France but Banks (solid keeper with fantastic positional sense) passed a late fitness test and so he played. It was only a friendly and could have let Monty play. Apparently Monty was a huge threat to Banksy as England keeper. Also playing in the north east did not help as Ramsey never came up here

    • @geoffpoole483
      @geoffpoole483 Před 9 lety

      A problem with being a goalkeeper is the specialist nature of the role. Outfield players can and do adapt slightly in terms of their playing positions but this doesn't happen with goalies. If there is an established keeper in an international side then it can often become difficult for other keepers to get a game. It's a pity managers and coaches of national sides don't give up and coming players a chance in friendlies, particularly goalkeepers. Every single footballer is one bad tackle away from a career-ending injury, so I think managers need to keep their options open. Banks played for relatively modest teams as well. Was Monty later transferred to Nottingham Forest? The FA Cup Final double-save is something I never tire of watching. A shame that so much good football won't be seen because tv coverage was quite limited in those days.

      Geoff Poole Yes Monty played for Birmingham City after us and received player of the season award from their supporters. He saved a penalty on his debut for them. He regularly saved penalties. He was then signed by Brian Clough as backup to Peter Shilton when Monty was 36 for Nottingham Forest. Brian at the time said he had the best goalkeeper in the world and the best reserve goalkeeper in the world. Monty in his prime was the better of the two. Much more agile, quicker reflexes and could fly up into the top corners of the goal. Shilts always looked over weight and I believe he only ever saved one penalty in his career. Monty on the other hand was only a teenager when he became first choice and saved all 8 of the first 8 penalties he faced. I finally met Monty in May 2014 and had my photo taken with him

    subtle difference IMO that makes Banks save better, he is airborne and flicks the ball up and over with no leverage, Montgomery uses his grounded body as a wall and the balls hits his arms and then with it's own force goes up - Banks creates the force so in a way reverses physics...

      Majesticgamer05 My No.1 hero. How I wish they televised all the games in those days. The amazing saves he pulled off. Certain goals. I often used to watch the opposing striker shake his head in disbelief. Some used to ruffle Monty's hair in tribute to him. My other heroes are Bruce Lee, Elvis, George Best, Mohammed Ali. As you can see everyone of those are at the top of the tree in their profession, so Monty is in good company. I had my photo taken with him (Monty) last year. I have 3 scrap books on him from being a kid. Him and Bruce Lee were splattered all over my bedroom wall. I wish I could get the MOTD video of the cup final when they were all interviewed. I remember the interviewer mentioning him and not playing for England. I always said Monty was as good a goalkeeper as George Best was a footballer. I told Monty that too. If you took the best bits of Banks, Jennings, Shilton and Clemence and put them in a mixing pot you would come up with Monty. Apparently he never played for England only due to his goal kicks which used to screw off the pitch. Insider information, who I will never disclose. He eventually sorted that out with Hepple's help. Even Charlie Hurley said Monty was the best shot stopper in the country even when he was very young. King of the Keepers!!!
