  • While many Sega fans are nostalgic for Sega's CD add on, those early days were rough as hell. While I love to think back at how cool it was owning one, there is no doubt there were some serious problems.

    Episode Notes:
    1. Captured on the Mega SG.
    2. Some good games came out in 1993, starting with the likes of Batman Returns, Final Fight and Sonic CD. The system had been out for months before they showed up, so the damage had already been done.
    3. I did eventually get my own Japanese Mega CD once prices came down a bit.
    4. Throughout its life the Sega CD got a number of games that were never released in Japan for the Mega CD and vice/versa. It was region locked so owning both region variants was almost mandatory to fully explore the library.
    5. I had my first Sega CD stop working about a year after I got it. Since then, I've had to repair/replace it more than any other system I have ever owned.
    6. There is also a 5 game version of the pack in compilation here. They added Super Monaco GP to later bundles.
    7. The Sega CD also a CD+G disc packed in. I didn't include it here because frankly, I thought the idea was lame as hell.

The funny thing is this is the worst version of the game. It really is embarrassing. The version later released on the PC Engine CD\TurboGrafx-CD (ironic because the PC Engine CD was released 4 years before the Mega CD!) played better on weaker hardware with 2 buttons and the story\cut scenes are better. Don't get me wrong, this game is terrible no matter how you play it, but it's funny it was improved on a much weaker system.

I wonder if CZcams actually killed gaming. Now you can watch any game being played through from start to finish before you buy it.
In the 90's and even up until about 2010, all you had was magazines and maybe a quick look at the game in the shop before you bought it.
I remember playing through Valkyria Chronicles on PS3, getting stuck here and there, trying to come up with strategies (no CZcams guides to help me)

I've always felt that it wasn't the hardware that started to kill Sega it was how Sega didn't support all the new hardware. Sega Cd was basically FMV and regurgitated Genesis games. 32X was the same. While there were a few original games for the most part it was just quick cash grabs. And they would quickly abandon the new hardware. It just got to the point where you couldn't trust them.

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 Před 3 lety +9

Exactly because the new hardware wasn't necessary and they struggled to support platforms that shouldn't have happened to begin with. Remove the hardware and you don't have a software problem anymore.

True except Genesis 2.5 years was master system, cd, 32x was a little over a year Saturn and dreamcast 2 years,
Master System got an extended life because it was big in Europe and game gear was just a mini version of it.

With the extra hardware in the Sega CD it would have been nice to see them push it to the max. With twin 16 bit processors, increased storage and scaling hardware I wonder what a game that squeezed out every ounce of power would look like.

    • @justanotheryoutubechannel
      @justanotheryoutubechannel Před 2 lety +1

@@CRAZYHORSE19682003 Me too, but I think the fact that it was an add on really gimped it. Sonic CD made much better use of all the features than most games for the console, you got CD audio, PCM audio using the new chip, FMV, loads of new stage themes and artwork filling the CD, plus 3D sprite scaling and mode7 like effects. The Sega CD could do a lot more scaling than the SNES, but it was heavily limited in terms of framerate and resolution.
The lack of bandwidth on the connector between the Sega CD and the Mega Drive limited the video framerate & resolution massively (plus lack of CPU power to decode the video), and the MD’s colour palette limited the FMVs to 16 colours. The lack of bandwidth also limited the framerate and resolution of scaling effects, Sonic CD’s Special Stages and Title Screen run at 256x224@20fps whereas the rest of the game runs at 320x224@60fps(roughly, it drops a lot into the 50s), because the bandwidth limitation held it back. You can also see that in the famous Batman & Robin game, there’s a lot more scaling going on than any SNES game, but the framerate is much lower, 30 at the most but it feels lower to me.

I was one of those gamers that was really interested in the Sega CD until I saw the lackluster lineup of initial games.
One thing that many people don't acknowledge is that up until around 1994 -95 many developers didn't have computers that had hard drives large enough to accommodate the storage a single CD could provide. That made it hard to develop a game that truly took advantage of the CD medium outside of FMV (which was mostly scripted) or plain old Redbook audio which was easy to add during mastering.
I also wonder what kind of development tools Sega provided and if those tools could take advantage of the additional hardware from the start or if the developers had to figure that out on their own.

That's the annoying part is I'm sure publishers were saving a LOT more than $5 to produce a game on CD than on a cart, and if they had done a better job passing that savings on to consumers and advertising CDs as a cheaper media, it might have brought more people on board who were looking to save on games over time. If CDs had been priced at half the price of carts, they would've moved.

The Sega CD wasn't the best game console ever, but the first one to bridge games and cinema. It had some amazing console exclusives: the one and only English-audio Snatcher port (with fantastic voice acting), Heart of the Alien (love it or hate it), Dark Wizard, Keio Flying Squadron, a half-decent Jurassic Park point-n-click, Sega CD, and Lunar: The Silver Star. The pack-in titles were awesome and held us over until we saved enough allowance to buy more games. And it had amazing ports of point-n-click adventures like Rise of the Dragon, Willy Beamish (both also with amazing voice acting), and Monkey Island. The FMV titles weren't bad either: Road Avenger, Time Gal, Revenge of the Ninja, and Cobra Command were stellar FMV titles. Power Rangers, Night Trap, and Kamen Rider Zo were less technically impressive but still fun. Despite a lot of shovelware and gruesome load times, to the Gen X / Millennial generation this system captured our imaginations and was a sign of things to come with cinematic gaming.

I agree with you on a lot of the titles that focus on regular/traditional gameplay, action titles, strategy, and adventure games such as Snatcher which I feel works well on a console.
I am not so sure about titles that were clearly more intended to be played with a mouse such as Willy Beamish and Secret of Monkey Island. I should know this as I am old enough but I don't recall if there was ever a mouse peripheral for the Sega 16 bit/Sega CD.
But the FMV titles, that is where my opinion really differs from yours. I feel these were some of the worst titles on the machine. (not an attack on your opinion)
Perhaps interesting from a visual point of view but gameplay wise these games simply were not fun.
I think Sega wasted too much money on titles such as these.
It would have been better to focus on more traditional gameplay games and use the extra space for more/bigger levels and music. Cutscenes and and voices of course would still be fine.
Focus also should have been mostly on games exclusive for the Sega CD and not enhanced ports from the regular 16 bit, and ports from other machines that would never work on a regular 16 bit.
That might still not have saved the machine as it was also quite expensive, and face it, most parents would not buy an addition to a console that is as expensive as the machine itself.
But perhaps the Sega CD would have come out better this way.

@@TheDutchGhost Genesis/Sega CD has a mouse but not great compatibility across library. The mouse also would have made FMV games where you shoot with a target better. Agree that Snatcher is designed so it works great with a controller and some of these others don't, the shooting gallery areas especially are fun with just a control pad. The late released strategy RPGs and JRPGs were as good as anything on SNES but that was such a niche group of gamers back then pre FFVII. A SNES CDRom with Square/Enix support would have been an insane gift to gamers.

The hardware was capable of full screen video, but it shows most devs had no idea what they were doing in the early days of FMV. Maybe it was a devkit issue or something, but I don't know why most Sega CD FMV 160x112 instead of the native 320x224 when some games were the later. It wasn't like storage space was an issue, most of these games grossly underutilized the storage capacity of CD-ROM's and instead padded it with redbook audio.

I thought the MK port to Sega CD was quite good! They not only utilized the additional storage space but also the sound hardware and added RAM to add back in literally everything removed from the arcade game to fit it on a bare Genesis... every frame of animation, all background elements, animated character bios, added speech, and CD-quality music ripped straight from the arcade. Considering limitations of the hardware such as color depth and screen resolution could never be enhanced by the Sega CD, I'm not sure what anyone could have expected them to do to make it better... there had to be some downscaling from 32,768 colors to 64 and from 400x254 to 320x224 no matter what.

One thing is that the PC CD-Rom was popular at the time and somewhat cost competitive if you had a pc. Fun bit of trivia: Sewer Shark and Night Trap were originally designed for a video game system that ran the video footage from VHS tape, the ISIX Nemo. The video was much clearer, and actually ran full screen. The Make Your Own Video games were also based on a prototype of the same theme for the Nemo. Oh, and Sewer Shark's SFX were done by John Dykstra's Apogee.

One thing that always frustrated me is that they didn't expand the color palette. You take the CD quality sound, scaling and rotation capabilities and throw in at least what the SNES was capable of displaying color wise and this would have really been the ultimate 16bit system for that era. Especially in the hands of top notch developers. I'd love to see some brave indie developer with a set of balls the size of coconuts take a crack at developing a Sega CD/32X platformer using every bell and whistle possible with that Frankenstein combination of hardware lol

The Amiga and Atari ST shared the Motorola 68000 cpu with the Genesis/Megadrive/SegaCD, so ports were a given.
