Episode Notes:
1. There are actually a few different endings here. Some of them have running commentary from the devs that are pretty funny.
2. In regards to the stand still animations, I let the two games run side by side for 30 mins. Both seem to have routines that are random, and both have a couple the other doesn't. I feel the Sega CD version got shafted here, however. The Genesis animations are faster, more often, and more varied.
3. Dave Perry did many other games before this, including Cool Spot.
4. There was a Earthworm Jim HD version for the Xbox 360 and PS3. It did not have the extras form the Special Edition here.
5. I like the SNES version of this game as well. I think visually its the best of the bunch, but I prefer the Sega CD overall for its music and extras.
6. The Sega Genesis cartridge was just 24 megabits. Seeing all the animation you'd think it would have been 32.
7. The Game Boy and Game Gear/SMS versions of this game are nowhere near their 16-bit cousins in regards to quality. Night and day in fact.
8. There was a PSP remake of this in the works, but it never saw a final release.
9. This contains the stage Intestinal Distress! that was originally exclusive to the Genesis version.
10. The music portion of this video has the selections simply labeled by tracks from the CD. I could not find their names anywhere.
11. I played this differently for the capture than I would on my own. Jim has lots of animations when he gets hit, and I wanted to show that.
12. I was had a cold while recoding this. You may notice my voice sounds a tad stuffy. - Hry
Lol. I’ve always thought that if a joke needs explanation, it’s not a good one. I called Psycrow a chicken because he wears a yellow space suit. I mean, I said his name in the same sentence, but alas, it seems to have failed. I’ll pin this to hopefully minimize more comments explaining to me that Psycrow is actually a crow.
Many cuz it wasn't a joke ur just reading a script, shout out to the team helping u pump these out. Nice insight to a person that covers up a mistake by saying it's a joke, very trump like.
@@nataliekozak788 The characters name is Psycrow. He is black. In a yellow suit. If you can’t accept that and have dish out insults over it, go elsewhere.
What insult? Just an observation
@@nataliekozak788 Calling me a liar is an insult, particularly since I have made entire videos admitting I have made a mistake before. I’m a lot of things but a liar isn’t one of them.
@Code Metal Monkey yea that, and not the whole trying to cover up even the smallest of mistakes to seem better. all that
I lament the fact that Earthworm Jim hasn't seen a comeback yet.
Most things are better left alone when it comes to the woke AAA game industry and woke Hollywood.
I’m pretty sure they’re working on a game
The third game is coming to the new upcoming Intellivision.
Understatement of the decade
Find the right developers it i'll happen
such a beautiful game... way ahead of its time
More sega CD please.

Sega Lord X reviews never disappoint, good work! i'm a huge fan
Agreed!
Haven’t even started the video but I loved earthworm Jim growing up. Know it’s going to be a great video as always!
Now talk earthworm jim 2 on saturn.
The new graphics they added to that were horrendous. Ugly pre-rendered CG. Who was responsible for that? A studio called "Screaming Pink" apparently.
@@AnthonyFlack Yesterday I burnt it and played on Saturn. The first and most annoying thing I noticed was: password on a Saturn game, instead of the system memory or memory cartridge? Really?
Snes version is worse
@@AnthonyFlack I owned the ps1 version of jjm 2.. was it the same?
@@jonnyblanka - looks like it. You only have to look as far as the awful new background in level 1. Genesis version is the one.
Absolutely love these retro reviews you got going. Thanks so much
My neighbors had special edition EWJ on PC and I loved it! I asked my parents to get me the game for our Genesis. I only had a few games for the genesis and played that version a hundred times. Later years on PC I played the special edition all the way through. Never knew about the Sega cd version. After seeing this review I do think the audio samples are better on the PC and that makes it the best port to play
💯💯💯
Rampagin Rex Productions said it as well about this port. Low quality voice samples and terrible gut punch vfx when enemies are dead
I hope you can cover more Sega CD games in the future. It was a very under appreciated and under utilized console but it had some great (non-FMV) games!
It had some great FMV games too... And some really bad ones.. ;-)
@@desiv1170 What were the "great" FMV games?
@@amosrozet9325 Off the top of my head, I'd say Dragon's Lair (my fav) but a lot of people say Road Blaster is better. It is good. If you enjoy camp, then there are more enjoyable FMV games out there too, although some people don't get/like camp...
@@desiv1170 As far as I know, all of these games had terrible controls. I got Sewer Shark as the pack in game with my Sega CD and it was really hard to do basic stuff like move the cursor around or change directions.
@@amosrozet9325 I haven't had any problems with the controls on those. Quicktime style games aren't for some people, and some aren't any good at all. But at least those two I think got it right. I haven't played Sewer Shark much TBH... While I loved the campy FMV scenes, I never got the hang of the game, which could well be the controls.
Omg one of my favorite games! Thanks for showing Earthworm Jim some love!
did you back the new earthworm jim on indigogo?
@@neonniteridr294 no didn't know they were working on one. Is it still up?
Always felt you could see too little on the screen. I feel like EJ in 16:9 widescreen would be a big improvement.
Great content as always man. And God, how much I would love to see a new Earthworm Jim game.
A damn shame that Earthworm Jim never got the comeback he deserved...
Still got it on my shelf today!
Track 11 is up there as one of my favorite vg music pieces
Love your videos SLX keep it up brother
Music scared me to death near the end. Spooky stuff man
One of the most insane games ever!
love the properly scaled retro footage @segalordX, looks great! Even with the excessive dithering, it's always nice to see great 2d artwork represented properly for videos like this. EWJ is a game I never really got in to, but I only ever played the SNES version back in the day. Gonna play through the SegaCD version soon after watching this video. Looks like a definitive port. Happy holidays amigo!
Groovy review!
Sega Lord X love your content! As a 33 year old man I grew up with the Sega Genesis even though here in the UK it was called Megadrive 2. Sonic was the main game I use to play on religiously! But never played Earth worm Jim remembering reading it on magazines etc but never got the chance to play it. Seeing this video the game looks so ahead of its time imo the smoothness and flow you get that other games didn't have makes me really want to buy a megadrive and this game what a gem of a game!
I remember playing this at my cousins house on the Genesis and it was so much fun! If you haven't played Earthworm Jim you are missing out this game is dope! Oh yeah, yeeeeeeeeeee doooooogeeeeyyyy!
I like the voice samples on the Sega cd version of this game over the Genesis version. I have the Genesis cart of Earth Worm Jim. Back in the day i played the SNES version. These days i prefer the PC version of EW and EWJ2 on Steam.
Was playing this last weekend 👊
I was soo close to buying this game yesterday. It’s expensive as hell though. As I was doing some soul searching, someone else scooped it up at a fair price. I’m gonna pick up a McWill modded Game Gear and that version of this game instead.
That mod is so worth it. My Game Gear games never looked so good!
Ever think of buying a raspberry pi board and load up retropi? For 100 bucks can makes a pretty decent emulator box!
I thought the whole point of the Sega CD was to allow developers to release enhanced ports of their Genesis counterparts. Making an entirely new game just wouldn't be cost effective.
I guess it depends on how far those enhancements go. Here, the game is literally 95% untouched. You take away the opening, ending and CD music, and it’s a stage that’s the difference. Is that enough? It definitely is gonna be different person to person.
The sega cd version is the definite version of the game, i paid $50.00 for it but that was over 10 years ago and i thought that was kind of high
But today this game is expensive as hell and it is definitely not worth the price it goes for
@@lldjslim what about the Saturn version? (Oh no that was EWJ2)
Would make sense to make a new game if they mae a completely new game. But this game is competing with the cartridge version or sales so yeah doesn't make sense to put too much money into new features as it's already lost all the sales to the cartridge.
@@orderofmagnitude-TPATPdefinitive version of that game
I really enjoyed playing the HD Remaster on the PlayStation 3.
Oh wow, I’ve never seen that 8 bit port... gosh, looks like a nightmare lol but I’m curious. The soundtracks are pretty amazing across the board with the EWJs, then hearing the special edition is really just a quality shock! Like a dream come true. I had a lot of fun covering EWJ 1 & 2 on Genesis from start to finish, those visuals and music will really keep you thinking about it long after setting it down.
Another great vid, 4th I’ve watched in a row 👍
This game rocks back un the day
Such a rad game. Thanks for the video!
I had this for pc, similar to the sega cd version with the sound track + playing with his gun sprites. This is a great game.
I own this on PC CD,
CD is also an audio disk,
Listened to the soundtrack all the time, it's still awesome.
Best version of the game IMO is the HD remake, bought it on Xbox 360 and it's supported on backwards compatibility.
GROOVY!
And another awesome video !
Sega Lord X fan club 🙋🙋🙋
There are very few platformers on the Mega-CD.
Good video!
Another great vid. Great analysis of a classic. I never played the CD version but I loved Earthworm Jim just the same. You're right though, there's not much graphical improvement even by the Sefa CDs standards. Although in the standing animation tests you show, I notice the frame rate is faster and slightly smoother.
I own a physical copy of this game and remember paying $50.00 for it, now im pretty sure that price has increased
You could propably get anywhere between 100-250$ for it now.
@@joonaslehtonen7965
Loose or complete

@@lldjslim Just had a look on fleabay, a complete copy went for $255 recently- and that was on the low end price wise. Not selling my copy any time soon!
@@3800scgp
Me neither
Gonna hold on to mines also
Thats just a insane price to pay, some game company should pick up the rights and remaster this
I dont know, tell you the truth i just threw that figure from hat. All i know is that lousy sega cd games are quite expensive if they are cib, so i would imagine Earthworm Jim, which a game i would imagine collectors/gamers would want, goes pretty high. Over 50 but under 100 for loose, good condition cib over 200. Maybe even 300.
Aside from the new weapon and stage, there are a few other differences.
- There's a new sub-stage in New Junk City where Jim jumps out of his suit similar to how he does at the end of What The Heck.
- A new hidden teleport in Down the Tubes that lets you skip the dreaded tube race section. It also takes you to a new section of Andy Asteroids.
Other than that it's just a new OST and some pickup placement changes. That being said I still love this version and even though the Genesis has my overall favorite OST, the Sega CD version has my favorite rendition of New Junk City. Also that new stage is pretty cool and atmospheric.
Track 11 was used on the Electric Playground tv show with Victor Lucas and Tommy T.
I had both versions of the game. The genesis version was fun but I greatly enjoyed the improved sound quality of its CD counterpart. I enjoyed the CD so much I would actually play the CD in my CD player just to listen to the tracks. In my later years I bought the anthology album. Its one of my favorite game albums.
Time to dig out my copy
Great video, as usual. 😊
Do you think you could someday review the Sega Saturn version of Earthworm Jim 2?
There was a game that was a clone of this called Crazy Drake made for eGames Galaxy of Games Gold Edition back in the day. Really loved that game!
Groovy
Except the color palette, this could have easily been a saturn/playstation 2D platformer. Simply stellar work!
It's weird how the Sega CD version is missing some idle animations.
They're not, for some reason they all appear but depending on the level you are.
10:30
Is that power icon running faster on the cart version or is it my imagination?
I love this game
Man i played the HELL out of this game on the Genesis!
I'll be keen to see you review Earthworm Jim 3 whenever that comes out.
Man i used to have this game as a kid lol
I heard Bethesda is putting Skyrim: Special Edition on the Sega CD. Will you be reviewing that game when it comes out?
I also heard there porting Skyrim to the sega game gear

There's Earthworm Jim 2 on the Sega Saturn, Sony PlayStation X, and Nintendo Game Boy Advance while the first was on the Sega Game Gear, Super Nintendo, and Nintendo Game Boy Advance as well. I have the Game Gear and CD versions onto Kega Fusion and they were excellently exciting!
I've always wanted to try the Sega CD version of this, along with the Saturn version of Earthworm Jim 2.
Great video! I have both the Genesis and Sega CD versions, but my Sega CD model 2 is busted. I've actually never played the CD one!
Still have my copy from the late 90's. That and the Saturn version of EWJ 2. Treasures
The first Earthworm Jim I played was Special Edition on the PC. It was around that time Sega had started publishing CD games for the PC (Sega Rally was another one I played on PC long before I ever got a Saturn). They may even have had the PC in mind more than the Sega CD when they made Special Edition, which might explain why they didn't change it up too much.
Yes! Such a good game. Big Bruty, the character whose bonus stage of the same name is on the Sega CD, was named after one of the artists of the game.
I always play this on my genesis mini🔥🔥🔥🔥
Rented the Megadrive game, had a Mega CD so I got special deition for my birthday, I still have it.
The first game I ever owned where I fully mastered it (completed all difficulties doing them all on one life) after playing the Mega version on the Megadrive mini though I'm amazed I managed it, it's harder than I remember! I'll have to hook up the Mega CD and see it again for myself.
Bout time!
If you want the Special Edition with no highly compressed sound effects, definitely go for the PC version (not the Steam version)
Seeing Andy Asteroids was giving me flashbacks to crashing or losing the race and having to fight lol
I have the Sega CD version and love it! I'm glad I got it before prices when crazy. If you can get it at a good price snatch it up. It is a great game and I am glad it came out for the Sega CD. The enhanced sound and soundtrack really add a lot to the game's atmosphere. I was a little sad there was no Earthworm Jim 2 Special Edition but I guess that would be the Sega Saturn version of Earthworm Jim 2.
Thanks for covering this, I was wondering what the differences were. Any other Sega CD / 32x games like this I should know about?
I love earthworm jim. he was so 90s with the ren and stimpy art style and goofyness
I played earthworm jim a few time's and I think it's a good game. I never played the special edition for sega CD though.
Im a HUGE HUGE platformer fan. But I never managed to get into Earthworm Jim. I dont know why. I can tell it is very well made. And my brothers played it a lot. I just dont know why I never got around to play it much.
David Perry was on fire at the time.love the game.
Would love to see your review pf Earthworm Jim 's 2 Saturn port.
For some reason in my brain I've always associated Earthworm Jim and Boogerman together. I'm sure it has to do with the time of release, art style, and 90s gross out humor. Wouldn't mind a Boogerman review for nostalgia sake. Might be an appropriate game to review for someone who currently has a cold. Get well and keep the awesome content coming.
Man I really can't wait for the next game 💯 hopefully it's a great game I loved earthworm Jim as a kid
did you back the new earthworm jim on indigogo?
I love how SLX properly said that Tommy Tallarico Studios i.e. the employees did the work
Streets Of Rage 4.
Battletoads.
Ghosts n' Goblins. All these things happened. It's about time this legendary worm made a comeback!
The hilarious alternate endings for beating it on easy or hard make this version worth it alone for me. I’m surprised you didn’t mention it, and instead mostly skimmed over it. I mean you’re the best and really, what are worms?
Shiny says, "you're the best!"
A huge question I have, did they add SAVE GAME SUPPORT on the Segqa CD version? That would be a game changer for mew. The other ones are way too long for one playthrough and my Snes SD2SNES flash cart has no save states. My Genesis flash cart has save states for cart games but no save states for sega cd games so if it has save game suport I would be so happy.
It uses passwords.
@@SegaLordX PASSWORDS! THAT'S ALSO AWESOME! I dont think th egenesis or snes carta had poasswords, or am I stupid and forgot? Im gona play the sega cd version for sure on my Mega SG! I started a gamne ont he geneiss cart the other day but ima switch over to cd now.
I see your point about Sega CD games not using all the hardware offered. But would chunky scaling have made Andy Asteroids any better? Shiny were experts in 2D well animated platformer, I doubt they would have gotten much ROI by spending 6 more months or so to expand a Sega CD game in that way, still, I'd have loved to have seen it! The Sega CD version is my favorite, although I was just playing the Genesis one and appreciated it's brevity without the extra additions and level. I don't really have a point here, but thanks for the Sega CD and EJ content.
Groovy... 🐛
There are 2 platform games on the Genesis that I would like covered or at least featured eventually. They aren't the very best, but they are lots of fun.
The 2 I'm thinking of are Sylvester and Tweety Cagey Capers, and Desert Demolition starring Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote.
Good review. Interesting game. Is fairly forgotten about...
the improvements don't jusitify me buying it again.
That last level was diabolical if you don't know the shortcuts. Overall this release of earthworm jim is great, loved the new sound tracks and the clearer voice samples.
The MS-DOS version does contain the extra weapon and level, too! So, this is a good place to try EWJ! There *might* be several versions of this, because some versions I found on CZcams look crappy. But I did try it myself, and it was as good as the Genesis version :)
You talk about the stand still animations, and if I remember right there are codes you can put in on the sega cd that will give Jim specific animations. Such as red afro, gracho marks glasses, etc. Look it up
I got Earthworm Jim on the SNES back in 94' I played the Genesis version for the first time in 2003. I was blown away by how superior the Genesis version was. This is still an all time great, and very ahead of its time.
Not many times we could say that Sega had the superior version of a game that was also on SNES. I loved my Genesis but there was no denying that most multiplatform releases looked, and usually sounded, better on the SNES.
I remember playing Earthworm Jim on the Super Nintendo.
I always liked the Game Over screen, music and animation in Earthworm Jim 2.
And the end in Earthworm Jim 1 and 2 ...... i won´t spoiler it for anyone who never played an Earthworm Jim game.
Track 11 aka Buttville - The Descent is one of the best music track ever created
Looks a very good game
I wonder if the Genesis has more idle animations because they didn't need to be loaded into ram?
Almost certainly. The animation the Sega CD does have is much simpler as well.
I had the PC version way back in the day. I'm pretty sure it was basically identical to the Sega CD version, plus a cheats menu. I think it also had the idle animations not present in the Sega CD version. Not sure about the extra level, though.
I also had the PC version of Sonic CD, but I don't know if there were any differences there.
It has been documented before but the practice of just releasing mostly the same game with CD audio was what held the Sega CD back. Besides the fact that the Sega CD deserved software that would highlight it's unique capabilities the problem with this was that these games were already available for a while on Genesis/SNES and most consumers are not going to pay full price again or even get all that excited about a game that they have already owned and recently put a lot of time into on another console. Having an extended level here and there and making a "definitive edition" just wasn't enough; the Sega CD should have had exclusive installments of these franchises. Instead of developing Sonic CD how about simply making Sonic 3 again and adding in the CD quality rendition of the same music? Nope I'll take Sonic CD as it is. Same notion should have applied to other properties also.
I know this game has many fans. It has a really strong presentation, but I never could really get into many of its gameplay mechanics or the stage design. That's how it goes sometimes, but it was still interesting to see what changes they made. The first music track highlighted here, "track 11", gave me Technosoft vibes.
This game saved me! Early as a teenager got chicken pox played this as long as I was awake
They said "it has 1000 new frames of animation", so they never said "it has 1000 more frames", they could remove 2000 frames and add 1000 new frames and their statement would still be correct even though it has fewer animation frames overall ;)
I have earth worm Jim for my phone and it's genesis perfect 👌 hard as hell though as I've never finished it. Yo SLX!!!!
This looked amazing on the Genesis in the day, visually stunning. I guess, if you didn’t have it on the Genesis and you have a Sega CD then buy the CD version; otherwise the Genesis version is good enough 👍🏻
Hell yeah it's worth it!
I got this for dirt cheap at a thrift store complete and in great condition. I never liked or understood the appeal of the game, but I'm glad that I have it.
