    If you think this is confusing you are NOT ready for space age bachelor man. But I think the "thing" is that they're expressing who they dreamt they were/what they wanted to be even if it wasn't realistic. Their songs are about their aspirations and personalities/their TRUE selves. And Noel's whole thing was he craved tragedy because he lived in a place where he was unable to express himself (he's the only gay man in a small rural town) so to him this tragic dramatic life he came up with (influenced by his love of French new wave cinema) is preferable to the apathy he feels being forced to suppress his passions and real personality

    Noel is a character who enjoys the concept of a tragic life. He’s the only gay guy in Uranium, and he loves poetry & drama. He wants to live as a French hooker because this persona of his (Monique) has an extremely tragic life that to him has a kind of charm.
    You really have to watch the musical to understand how the songs fit together, since without context, they make no sense…prepare yourself for Space Age Bachelor Man.

    Kholby Wardell, who plays Noel, was in the very first iteration of this musical back in 2008! He was Noel in every single professional production up until 2019 plus the official cast recording, and this song was the least changed of all of them. So he perfected this number for over 10 years! He informed the character as much as the writers did by that point.

  • @MxGreen-uq5ez
    @MxGreen-uq5ez Před rokem +211

    Noel’s song is so interesting as it shows how he was so bored by his day-to-day life that he would do anything for just a taste of sorrow
    or any emotion other than boredom, his wanting to be a hooker in post-war France and how he describes that life shows that his dream is living day to day not knowing if today is his last and choosing not to care he wants to live a life that’s tragic and messy because anything is better then what he has now

  • @gr1mreap3rz15
    @gr1mreap3rz15 Před rokem +384

    yeahhh, this musical is WILD without context - i mean, it's pretty wild WITH context too. you essentially got the gist of it: they're all dead, and fighting for who gets to come back to life, by singing about who they truly were in their soul rather than who they ended up being in life. in his life, noel (pronounced like "knoll") was a taco bell worker who was made to repress his more dramatic and flamboyant personality for the sake of fitting in his small town - in his dreams, noel was, as you just witnessed, monique gibeau, an intensely dramatic and tragic character.
    my personal favourite song from this whole show is "space age bachelor man", though it's... QUITE strange, so brace yourself if you watch that one. "sugar cloud" is another absolute banger, as is "what the world needs".
    if you're ok with back-to-back reactions, i'm going to gently suggest that you watch "this song is awesome" and "talia", but ONLY if you watch them back to back. they're two different songs sung by the same character, and you absolutely won't get the same effect or understanding of who he is if you only watch one. it's up to you, though, obviously!
    tl;dr this is probably my favourite musical right now and every single number is absolutely phenomenal, so i'd recommend just watching All Of Them. there's a good few slime tutorials floating around too, if that's something you'd be interested in. i can't recommend this musical enough.

    4:15 Yeah, according to one of the creators on Noel's Lament, "Oddly enough when we initially wrote this song, I wasn’t sure if it would make it. [...] I was worried that introducing a character who introduces you to another character that they’ve made up might be a bit too meta. And then Kholby Wardell auditioned, and absolutely crushed this tribute to Édith Piaf, Anaïs Nin, and Marlene Dietrich. And so it remained. This is the song that’s probably changed the least since it was first written. It also freed us early on from the constraint that Ride the Cyclone had to be an evening of autobiographical tunes, opening up the possibility that what might be just as engaging are songs that the kids themselves would want to be remembered singing."

  • @_amoonguss_

    you missed the part where he said post war France😂 basically it’s about how he would escape his “boring” life into this fantasy where he was a sex worker in 1940’s ish France. it was a life filled with drama and tragedy which was appealing to him. that’s how I interpret it anyway

  • @CinnamonQuills
    @CinnamonQuills Před rokem +124

    In a way, Noel and Ricky have both submerged themselves in their fantasy lives for their numbers. Ocean and Mischa's songs (or Mischa's FIRST song) are very straightforward "This is why I'm the best" numbers, Jane Doe's is creepy musings on the state of existence, Constance's song is her finding the good in life now that it's over. But Noel wishes his life was a French New Wave tragedy because it's glamorous and fascinating and camp while in real life he's the only gay kid in a tiny nowhere town and works at a Taco Bell. Ricky has made up an entire imaginary universe based on classic pulp Sci-Fi to exist in to make up for his life of disability and neglect.
    Of all the songs, really only Ocean's "What the World Needs" is an open, straightforward case for her winning the 'competition' of coming back to life (AFTER which Karnak reveals the rest of the rules that the winner needs a unanimous vote). After Mischa's "This Song is Awesome" is performed Karnak starts to prod a little more and get under the surface with them, at times with magical influence that forces them to reveal their secrets and uncover hidden truths, leading to Mischa's SECOND song "Talia" where he's actually vulnerable and goes into what he really dreams about.
    One really funny part of the cast album is where Karnak mentions that if someone were actually at the show they'd have a better idea what was going on during "Talia", so that's a good motivation to see the show, right?

    • @kateorgera5907
      @kateorgera5907 Před rokem +10

      I wonder if part of this is because, I'm not sure the original version of the show features a competition? This show was reworked a LOT before it got to this production - there's video from the 2013 version of the opening (czcams.com/video/uUn7yg4rOL4/video.html) where Karnak describes the show as "an apology by way of a concert - the last concert of the St. Cassian Chamber Choir". So there may not have even been a competition storyline when most of the songs were written. More evidence for this is that Ocean's song was the one revised the most. This quote from the Playbill track-by-track breakdown suggests this:
      "As mentioned earlier, Ocean could have an entire show of songs we cut from the show. She at one point used to sing a Marxist gospel number with a Karl Marx puppet. She’s had a Tin Pan Alley, almost tap routine, but none of it felt like the genre for our modern alpha teen. Brooke and I were on the Navy Pier at Chicago Shakes during the summer rewriting Ocean’s number, again. It was boiling hot in the most touristy part of Chicago, and especially packed because of an airshow, so the sound of fighter jets and pop music rang through the air. Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” was playing and we decided there and then that her song should be T-Swift pop, but with really aggressive lyrics."
      So while Ocean's song matches up with the competition storyline, the rest were likely conceived as simple experimental self-expression pieces.

    This is definitely a show where context is needed and provides a richer experience. Just know that for each song it’d a dive into their true selves so they’re all gonna be radically different cause they were a weird bunch of kids who never really got to know each other till the afterlife, with Jane literally unable to connect due to not having any knowledge about her inner life. Like I said in a previous video, Sugarcloud is a solid track in this regard, when paired with the phenomenal monologue that proceeds/ sets it up, as is This Song is Awesome/Talia (these NEED to be listened together to get a grasp on Mischas character and dichotomy. I’m glad you’re covering more of this. This is such an underrated gem and I’m glad more eyes are coming to it

    "Is this like an inverse Cats" YOU ARE NOT WRONG. The kids are in theory competing to see which one of them will be brought back to life. Each kid gets a number (or in Mischa's case two numbers back to back that show the dichotomy of his character) to express their character. They start off pretty shallow and get progressively deeper as we go through the cast and learn about their inner selves. The Ballad of Jane Doe is effectively the Memory of the musical- the big show stopper that is just one solid cry for help.
    I've spent most of my life around Art and Theater kids so Noel's number was the most familiar to me lmao. Boy is just using the fantasy of Drama and Angst to get through the humdrum of small town life. Of course you can dig deeper and unearth more Meaning once you know more about him but that is the gist.

    • @happychaosofthenorth
      @happychaosofthenorth Před rokem

      I think the opening number(s) went through a lot of changes. When I saw the show in 2013, the show opened with "Uranium" and it's very similar, if not almost identical, to the album - well, at least to a point. It changes when it shifts from their 'performance' to, I guess when they first realize they are in limbo and something is off/where they are riding the cyclone. In the version I saw it was called "Tragic Fact" in this one it's "Waiting for the drop" on the album it's just "Uranium Suite". I wouldn't be surprised if there was another opening number that had been used/cut/changed that there aren't any recordings of. You can see the version I saw of "Uranium/Tragic Fact" on CZcams.

    Typhoid Flu is a real disease, but there’s already a cure for it. Also, they somewhat do sing about their dreams. Like for example, Jane Doe wishes to know who she is and everything about herself that she knew before death and while everyone else got to keep the knowledge of who they are, hers was taken away. And the moral of her song is “it’s important to know who you are”.

    Noel was obsessed with tragedy in his life, relying on french films in his life. He always imagined himself a hooker, and he wanted to die tragically (like in an alley.) He also made earlier statements: “I wanted bad love,” “I wanted to wake up in an alley soaked in my own vomit!”

    yeah without context this number is a bit confusing, and it comes in immediately after ocean's deceptively peppy number "what the world needs" and is followed by mischa's first song (he's the only one in the show who gets two songs focused on him, unless you count "every story has a lesson," which i personally don't bc other characters have lines during it) talking about how awesome he is, followed AGAIN by his song "talia" which is a moving number full of longing for the love he never got to meet in life, followed by space age bachelor man, followed by the ballad of jane doe, and finally sugar cloud
    the musical is, if you'll forgive the pun, an emotional roller coaster
    sidenote: if you react to sugar cloud (which is, in my opinion, one of the best songs in the show) i recommend watching it with the monologue constance does before it. it adds an extra layer of depth to the text of the song

    the thing is each songs represent the dreams and aspirations of the characters, jane doe is so dramatic and sad cus nobody know who she is so nobody know her dreams and aspirations therefore its just her questioning her death and what it could mean to her, the rest all know who they are and their dreams and personalities, so every other songs in "ride the cyclone" is pretty much "noel's lament" and not close at all to "the ballad of jane doe"

    Ride the cyclone is absolutely amazing with how all the songs fit together to tell the story, most of them do not make any sense without context. If you want a song that makes sense with the knowledge you have from watching Ballad of Jane Doe, “What the World Needs” will fit right in with your preconceived concept of what the show’s about.

    if you think this was chaotic and confusing just wait til you listen to space age bachelor man! and yeah this is definitely a song you need more context to understand fully, but it's also still weird in context. in a good way though. they don't have to sing about anything specific, the songs are to try to convince the others that they're the one who should come back to life, so they mostly sing about their lives, their dreams, their ideologies, and who they wished they had been.

    ride the cyclone is very much a show where you need the full context to truly enjoy it, so i'd recommend watching the whole thing if given the chance-
    that being said, if you think noel's lament is wild compared to the ballad of jane doe, you simply MUST watch space age bachelor man
