    I said this on the original video, but part of what I think makes the show genius is its setting. Being set in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere really lets it reverse a lot of the typical high school tropes. The popular mean girl isn't the rich fashionista but rather the smartest girl in town who actually has a chance of making it out, and the one who is considered "uncool" is the only one who actually loves her town and doesn't want to leave. Something else that is important to know is that the script has gone through quite a lot of changes over the years. The one in this bootleg isn't the one that's currently used (You can read about half of the current one online for free!) but in every iteration, Ocean and Constance's relationship has been the heart of the show for me

    "why does he hate her so much" made me want to comment about what I think Karnak is actually trying to do.
    I think that the whole show Karnak is trying to help Ocean become a better person and accept her death so she can pass onto the afterlife peacefully. She wants to vote for herself because its a unanimous vote and she wants to do everything in her power to win so he switches it up on her and makes her make the decision by herself. He is constantly playing with her to help her see that she wasn't a good person and help her recognise that. I think that's really sweet of him and makes their storyline very cute.

    There's a theory going around with how everyone is singing abt being dead in Fall Fair Suite while Jane Doe is still 'screaming', and I'd like to add on how she shows up later than the others. It's not a lot so it's not like they can stay alive for a long time, but it's long enough to keep them "alive" for a little bit
      Since Jane is introduced later, it's possible that when she got beheaded she was still alive for a few moments and that's why she showed up later, this is backed up by the line: "And from the ground, beneath my feet, I hear the anguish of the street" which also could mean that she was alive for a *little* while after being beheaded

    Also with Ricky’s song I think it’s important to be thinking about Ocean’s comments during her song when analyzing it. He probably heard a lot of similar comments or sentiments in his life, so him coming up with a world in which his genetic makeup is necessary and where he is encouraged to reproduce I think is probably a reaction to sentiments of social Darwinism and eugenics. He is seen not just as a whole person in his song but as someone important and vital.

    I love Ricky's character, and especially the way that this actor threads the delicate balance of likability, because it's so easy to push Ricky into the category of either "unrepentant horndog" or "tragic disabled person who chooses death because it's better that way", neither of which I feel represents him. He is fundamentally zen, realistic about his wants and abilities, amused by his changes in circumstances, but absolutely accepting wherever life (or death) takes him. And the way that this actor somehow manages to balance a realistically awkward depiction of someone who's been mute for years with genuine Ziggy Stardust vibes is amazing!
    (But yeah, watching the show makes his character make SO much more sense than the cast recording alone, the latter is quite the decontextualized mindfuck!)

    God, Constance's speech about shame just gets me, man. I basically have that whole monologue memorized by now, lol. And for an extra gut punch, just think about how much of that shame likely comes from Ocean and how Ocean looks so sorry after "Sugar Cloud".
    I will say though, the elements about losing her virginity to the carnie never feels organic to me? Not that it doesn't make sense for her story, but the way it's presented. Nothing prompts her to blurt this out first. And I never get the "Constance the lifer loses it to a carnie in a crap box. Why of course she did" bit. Maybe because this is one of the first things they wrote for the show, I don't know.

      I love that speech so much as well, especially the whole "I was thinking awful things about my parents that I didn't want to because they were good people". Ugh it's so real. The way you can lose control of your own thoughts and feelings because of peer pressure/gaslighting is awful and that speech reflects that so well. I think the whole virginity thing makes a lot of sense for her though because she's the type of person who used to do things just to please other people or feel included and losing her virginity to a stranger in a carnival is a pretty bad thing so it kinda helps reinforce how far she was willing to go to feel like the other kids

      I always saw Constance losing her virginity as two things. 1: The complete opposite of what Ocean wanted her to be and 2: her conforming to what the teens around her are. It wasn't exactly nice, or something she enjoyed, but something she had to do to be a "normal" teen. She isn't proud of the choice.

      As someone who really relates to constance in a lot of ways, I disagree. Idk you tend to just blurt those things out. I also lost my virginity in a way I'm very ashamed of just to lose it because I felt I lived my life in a box as just the nice prudish kid. It's sporadic but that what you devolve to when you feel like a loser. I also am one to blurt out things like that when I get emotional or when I feel like I won't be judged because you're so used to holding in that shame that you just want to let it out, even if it seems out of place. It would honestly feel more forced to me if there was build up because building up to saying things like that makes you want to retreat more.

    • @carianawaters6425

      I always really understood that line actually. There’s a certain point you can reach in hating yourself where you start to wish bad things on yourself or complicitly let easily avoided things happen or even seek them out because you think it’s what you deserve or that it proves that you are what you think you are, and there’s consolation in being right and having “proof” you’re right. In Constance’s case she thinks she’s a loser and that this proves it. You stop seeing yourself as you and start seeing yourself as this other person that you hate or as this character in a story that you’re just helping reach it’s “logical” conclusion. “Constance the lifer loses it to a carnie in a crap box. Why of course she did.” She feels like that’s the logical conclusion. Hopefully that makes sense.

    For real though, something that’s super interesting to look into is the different versions of the opening song for this show. There are four main ones over the years (with minor alterations in different shows): Uranium / Tragic Fact, Fall Fair Suite (the one in the production you watched), Uranium Suite (the one on the cast album), and Waiting for the Drop. Fall Fair Suite is my personal fave, but they’re all bangers, and it’s really interesting to see what they drop or keep coming back to as the show evolves. If you think about it
    The whole thing was made for Ocean (And jane)
    Because Jane was gonna win no matter what because karnak could just choose who to bring back to life and he can also control what people do so he could just force people to vote for who he wants
    And out of everyone
    Ocean is the restless spirit because everyone was like sad but content with their death but Ocean was not
    Everything Karnak does to Ocean is so that she learns her lesson
    Like making her go first so she has the most time to develop
    There's more that i can't remember from the top of my head
    But in the end Karnak made Ocean be the deciding vote to make sure that she learns her lesson and grew
    Who Ocean votes for doesn't really matter since Karnak has the power but he made Ocean vote to make sure she had learned her lesson
    This just from a video about Ride the cyclone so i might be wrong

    • @raumarsene9910
      @raumarsene9910 Před 10 měsíci +2

      I mean Karnak does control them at times to keep the story moving along (with the musical sequences), but he does emphasize at the beginning that their wills are their own. I personally think he just said that to explain why they were going along with the choreography and backing of each song (especially in Ocean's song at the beginning, i mean if a person called you and everyone else losers that are never getting ahead in life while singing thier own praises. I personally wouldn't want to be a part of the human pyramid she stands on.) But that is certainly a plausible theory though. I do agree that Karnak does encourage Ocean to develop throughout, and his decisions do reflect that, but I don't think Karnak would have forced a particular vote. It would go against the whole premise of making someone change by thier own free will, if Karnak had forced Ocean to vote for Jane she would have learned nothing. Ocean had to develop on her own, Karnak just helped with the process.

    I do wanna point out that the writing of having Ricky concede is playing into the idea that disabled people are better off dead, regardless of his personal circumstances and reasons for conceding. The way that you interpreted his conceding is due to that idea that he couldn’t possibly be happy in life again is inherently ableist, but you aren’t alone in thinking that about him. It’s ingrained into a lot of media and society as a whole so it’s not a rare thing for people to assume disabled people would rather be dead, or would be better off that way. From my perspective as a physically disabled teenager, it feels uncomfortable. It’s strange and upsetting that some people think it would be better if people like me were dead, if I were dead. They believe that I can’t live a full and happy life, just because of my disability. I’ve also got gripes with the fact that he’s a disabled character intended for able-bodied actors, but that’s a whole other can of worms.

      @Barbara2.0  Před rokem +41

      Hey lovely, my deepest apologies if I made you feel uncomfortable. I totally understand where you're coming from and wanted to make it clear where I'm coming from as well. The idea of him being better off dead would never even cross my mind, my comments in the video are about the people he had to deal with in life treating him as less than. It's about being away from people who caused him harm and treated him differently because of his disability. It's also not about him being better off dead, but being better off in a kinder place where he is free from a world that discriminates against him, not from his disability. I'm really sorry if I came across the wrong way or caused you any discomfort, my sincerest apologies, it was definitely not my intention

    • @isitmarsforever
      @isitmarsforever Před 11 měsíci +7

      i thought the reason for his conceding was that because of his disability not exactly being something he could hide and knowing that where they live is pretty closed minded because of some things implied in some of the monologues (also how it’s implied ocean only got him in the club for sympathy points) that living there would be hard for him especially after dying and being able to move and talk as he liked that he was happier dead, i didn’t think of it like this😭 this really changed my point of view

    • @allisonbergh4429
      @allisonbergh4429 Před 10 měsíci +21

      I’ve read a lot of the discussion around this character, and I just want to say in response to this particular point, while it is a valid one, his intro makes it clear that he’s not so much “disabled” as he is terminally ill. He wasn’t born that way, and doesn’t have the prospect of a full (if different) life if he survives the accident. I think his concession isn’t implying disabled people don’t have lives worth living, but that Ricky has already come to terms with his death, and would rather die quickly in a roller coaster accident than slowly of a degenerative disease. If there’s a larger point to be made, it’s that terminally ill people have the right to choose death on their own terms.

    • @islasullivan3463
      @islasullivan3463 Před 8 měsíci +8

      Yeah the way he’s written is definitely uncomfortable, though I do think that his reason for conceding wasn’t bc he could not be happy, but bc he was already dying and had come to terms with his death, of course he wants to live again but he’s not going to be selfish and take another person’s chance at life, which is what the others realize.

    • @marveludus
      @marveludus Před 8 měsíci +1

      This is just a personal opinion, but you made me want to share my thoughts as well :D
      I'm also disabled, and I think there was potential here for sure. They didn't have him - or the others - say he'd be better off not returning because his disability. He was also portrayed as being incredibly caring throughout the whole show, so the "don't be a dick" line feels like a perfectly believable reason why he'd concede!
      Misha's line about him being so "awesome in the afterline" is a big yikes though, that could have been worded better. Or at least been at a different moment, right after he concedes it reads too much as what you brought up.
      The decision to simply make him not disabled (among many other changes) for new performances irks me a lot. They didn't even make an effort to improve on what could have been great representation!
      Like what if they made it a point to clarify that his disabilities don't just disappear when he's that, because that's such an annoying concept and so harmful too, but because of Karnak's power or because his vivid imagination causes those changes in the twilight zone? It being such an in-between state would make sense for that!
      Maybe he could sign instead of speaking? Even if he suddenly gained the ability to speak, it would surely still feel more comfortable to sign.
      Just, so many things they could have considered.

    cool thing i saw about talia (the song, not the actual character). when they start projecting the video of talia on the girls dresses, they mainly put the video on jane. this kinda means that they never really knew if talia was a real person/mischas real girlfriend or not, like how they didnt remember jane being a part of the choir.

    The thing is it's kind of fate that Karnak was set to Family Fun Mode since if he hadn't been, and had been able to warn the choir about their deaths, then they wouldn't have ridden The Cyclone and thus wouldn't have died, but then that would have meant that they were never going to die on The Cyclone, creating a paradox where Karnak can only have predicted accurately if he says nothing.

    I feel like when Karnak mentions, "The one who wants to win it the most will redeem the loser in order to complete the whole," he's referring to them all accepting their deaths, thus being able to move on peacefully.
    Ocean struggled the most, so she most likely was the final piece. I wonder, if she hadn't accepted her fate in the end, would her turmoil had condemned everyone else?

    Pleaseeeee watch Alice by Heart at some point! It’s from the creators of spring awakening and really is so perfect in many ways, definitely watch the bootleg so it makes more sense 😂 and another suggestion is Bonnie & Clyde, it has Jeremy Jordan at some of his best vocals and is a really fun take on the story of B&C

    4:31 this part is so minor, but this would've terrified me as a kid. Because when you're a kid, and you're sitting down in the theater, listening to the band practicing before it really starts, you're waiting forever (it feels like), and then the lights go down and you feel the suspense... Then the headless person sings a creepy ass song... THEN A FORTUNE TELLER TELLING THEIR AUDIENCE THIS

      I looked into it, and this did happen. It's horrible, and we should absolutely be angry, but I want to emphasize that this happened in a regional production, and neither the creators nor the original cast were involved. We should be mad at the staff who worked on that production, and the actor did name names, but I don't think talking about it on a video about the Broadway production is the best idea just because people might be confused and go after people who worked on the Broadway production

    • @MysteriousGirl10
