    fascinated by this interview. thank you so much for taking the time to interview these two- ive been going down a rabbit hole myself of RTC 'lore' myself and one of my questions was just how much the opening numbers had changed. glad that my assumption of uranium suite just being more narratively satisfying being correct after all. of course, theres some stuff other stuff i'd liked to have answered, but thems just the breaks on me ("is ocean a communist" will be confirmed one day). anyway, great fun. excited for the website too

    I’m definitely in my RTC phase (been watching related stuff nonstop for like a week), so seeing this is like a godsend. A bunch of my friends and I are like, so obsessed that we combined it with another web series we’re obsessed with (Spooky Month) and made a whole type of thing in order to scratch our brains, lmao. The creators seem like such a joy to talked to and I entirely envy you for being able to meet and talk to them about their masterpiece. I will absolutely be looking around the website 👀 and I cannot wait for when the show returns to make its rounds in the US because I absolutely NEED to Ride The Cyclone myself.

    If you like the "round and round again" cycle aspect of this musical, youd ADORE the way Dolls of New Albion is written. the main theme is generational cycles it has FASCINATING worldbuilding. its also a steampunk opera which is totally up your alley sooooooo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    The off-b'way slime for RTC popped into my CZcams feed a week after my mom passed. I clicked on it expecting to just preview a minute of it thinking it might be a diversion... It was _not_ a diversion - I couldn't look away. The show provided so much catharsis that made me cry and laugh and felt like a weird hug out of nowhere, so RTC holds a special place for me. I feel RTC fills the modern day slot of Thornton Wilder's OUR TOWN regarding existentialism and how it's so easy to overlook all the unique and weird beautiful magic of everyday life that seems mundane as it whizzes by.

    Actually nick said most of their characters came from how all the other college students saw them. Not just this show, most of the old shows like MAMD..yeah. Also Lauren keep rolling on the floor joke is from during rehearsal, Lauren accidentally fell down and they found this so hilarious it made it into the show. Based on Denise (who played Cho Chang) talking about her experience in starkid on her channel, she said their version of Cho Chang has southern accents because one time when she got drunk, the students found that she starts to talk in a strong southern accents and that's where Cho Chang as a character came from. Not even during AVPM, but even in MAMD even when she's playing a different character.

    I was in this show as Gabe a while back, so my mom knows it a little. Because of that- when I became aware after a seizure I said "Klonopin" a few times asking my mom to give me my meds, but she thought I was singing the lyrics to "Who's Crazy/My Psychopharmacologist and I"

    I think Ted survived the abstinence camp because of the "scare tactics" they used. Based on Time Bastard, Ted was very much like Pete, a nerd, the only huge difference from these two is I feel like Pete is willing to sacrifice himself for the ones he love while Ted is always afraid of actually doing things, runaway from the problems. (which also resulted in him not being able to confess his feelings to Jenny) So the fact that the first thing Ted mention about Abstinence Camp being "They use scare tactics" feels like those tactics actaully worked for him. I don't think he believed the Axe Man was 100% real, but to some degree..I think he did since he talked about how he could hear the footsteps and Axe dragging on the ground every night and THIS seemed like it genuinely scared him, if he didn't believe it was real, he wouldn't be scared but since he did..yk While he was able to sneak in contraband, I think he never actually tried all of those dirty behaviors.

    I was five when "Aladdin" came out and Jafar genuinely terrified me, nightmares and everything. "Twisted" makes me not only root for him but it's now canon in my head, to the point where I've never been able to see "Aladdin" the same way again. His relationship with his wife was so beautifully written I truly believed it, I can't unsee it, and I ship it so hard. Bravo, Starkid!

    American here. I was 13 when 9/11 happened and remember it very well. I saw the touring production of "Come From Away" several years ago and it was such a surreal experience because one moment I'd be into the show, the music, and then the next a lyric or line of dialogue would push me back in time to being my childhood self on that terrible September morning and the days after it. But at the end, I was left feeling hopeful, my faith in humanity restored. That's what the show is all about, the human spirit triumphing when it has every reason not to. Thank you to the creators and cast of "Come From Away", and to the people of Gander, Newfoundland. You're all wonderful and I want to visit someday and get screeched in. Thank you for all you did.

  • @AliciaNyblade
    @AliciaNyblade Před 11 dny

    I saw the recent Broadway revival of this show. I went into it knowing nothing about it, to the point where I thought it was going to be a light-hearted piece given the title. Needless to say, it was quite a journey to go on and I loved it. Also, I fully believe Leo was innocent. The fact that there are still people today (mostly antisemitic assholes) who believe he's guilty boggles the mind.

  • @MonkWithoutACause
    @MonkWithoutACause Před 11 dny

    Kinda love this reaction, tho not as much as your usual stuff. You rather missed the point of it being a 19th century tale of woe. **Of course** the romantic lead still wants to **own** the heroine, it's told as a horror melodrama from 200 years ago. You'd have followed the touring company video (mostly the same cast) much better, the story is generally more stylized than you've seen.

    Some thoughts I had on the show that this show represents different broken homes or toxic relationships and pressure parents can put on their children. Obviously for olive its parents who are not there, for leaf its parents that don’t believe in you, for Marcy its parents that aren’t interested in letting their child do what makes them happy, for Logaine its parents that put too much pressure on their kids, for chip its parents that never properly humble their children, and for barfee its parents who don’t properly take care of a child that is not neurotypical. I believe 99% of people can relate to at least one of these or even a combination of these childhood experiences which is why it wrecks you. It can reach into a really traumatic place. Like you said nothing really dramatic happens, it’s a middle school spelling bee but it’s all psychological.

    I don’t know if anyone has said this in the comments-I understand this video is older, but I just stumbled upon this show and am obsessed-but your point on the “family fun setting” could easily be interpreted as a commentary on the parental tendency to shelter children from the harsher realities of the world, thereby putting them in more danger than if they were to enter adulthood knowing what they are going to be encountering.

    A little late to this but I love watching you give your interpretation of the meanings behind these songs. You have much better media literacy than I do haha. It's really fun to watch you analyze and react to the music as you go. Hope it's ok to suggest here but I think I'd be interesting to watch you listen to A New Brain. It's another William Finn musical that's actually heavily based on a real life event he went through after writing Falsettos. I absolutely love the music in it. I feel like you'd like it :) (and iirc it's all sung through like Falsettos, so it's pretty easy to understand everything that's going on without actually watching it).
