    What I heard from a reaction on another channel is that this first trailer is showing footage from both movies just to hype us up for the whole franchise, then as time goes on and we get closer to release time, we'll get more Part 1-specific trailers. That's why you see Dorothy and all the things that happen in act 2 in this trailer

    I understand where you're coming from with the visuals not being different, but I also think that Oz itself has a very distinct aesthetic that hasn't changed much since the 1939 movie. Plus the fact that they do also want to market to a more general audience that hasn't seen or heard the musical, without other context the visuals are a good way of conveying that it takes place in the world of Oz

    • @Barbara2.0
      @Barbara2.0  Před 4 měsíci +4

      But that's precisely why I was hoping they would be a bit more out of the box with it. It's a whole new generation, it's an adaptation of a musical that already dared to look at the story from a different perspective, why not hold on to that? If you ask me, there was no better time to reinvent the "Oz aesthetic" than with this movie

    I agree! I think the shot of galinda’s wedding is from Im not that girl. I actually think the shot of fiyero is from the lion cub scene cause it looks like Elphie’s hand in what may be her Shiz uniform’s shirt. Either that or a new scene added to the first film to pad the time a little for a full feature based on act 1.

  • @ViennaVampire
    @ViennaVampire Před 4 měsíci +2

    Regarding the shot at 3:35, I have three different theories as to what it could be; either, as you said, a moment during "not that girl", or a potential graduation ceremony that could be very briefly shown at the very end of the movie (assuming it ends right after "Defying Gravity", this could be part of a montage to prime us for where we'll pick up in part two) OR, and I would love this, it could be a call-back to the novel where there was a scene in which Madame Morrible gives Glinda and Elphaba magic visions of what they could achieve if they were to join the wizard and his regime. The scene is written from Glinda's pov and it shows her being married to a handsome, obscenly rich guy. Depending of how much book-only-content they wanna include in the movie, this could fit this moment quite well, too.
    Edit: Or, as someone else in the comment section rightly pointed out, they simply did include scenes from Part 2 in this trailer already to spike our interest. Still. I'd love for a few more book-inclusions. ^^

    I totally agree about the aesthetic. It feels too Wizard of Oz instead of Wicked. Wizard of Oz is about an outsider coming to Oz and seeing it for the first time; its magical, whimsical, optimistic, imaginative, it's somewhere over the rainbow. Wicked is about people who are FROM Oz, who see past the emerald facade to what it really is. It's gritty, dark, politically corrupt. I enjoyed seeing the poppy fields but I hope the actual movie doesn't lighten the themes too much

    I have some hope for the film since Jon Chu (director of In the Heights 2021 film) is directing this adaptation and Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba) is a powerhouse! Check out her performance of The Color Purple 2016 revival from the Tony ceremony which earned her a Tony.
    My only big gripe is why are the making this into a two-part film? If they are adding stuff in the novel, I would understand, but there is not much reason to market the film as such. Always love hearing your thoughts, Barbara :)

      Yeah people seem very polarised about it being two parts, and although I do believe it's partially for the money, I kinda like the idea of having more time to explore the meaning ful themes and relationships in the story, if they're seeing this as an opportunity to do so, that is

  • @Almando
    @Almando Před 4 měsíci

    Ok, Now that I have seen the trailer a Million and One times, gone frame by frame and over analyzed it, I believe this teaser has parts of both films. I think the frame with Elphie & Fiyero is from the scene where they rescue the Lion cub. The Wedding Scene could possibly be Glinda's I'm Not that Girl (Reprise) where Elphie crashes the Wedding and Fiyero leaves her at the alter but it could also be in Glinda's Imagination in Popular where she tells Elphie that she and Fiyero are getting married. Now Dorothy. Right After Elphaba and Fiyero sing As Long as you're Mine, That's when the Story of The Wizard of Oz starts to Overlap with Wicked. During No Good Deed, Elphaba turns Fiyero into The Scarecrow. Hope I could provide some context.

    What I really want to know is what they're going to be adding from the books. It's been over a decade since I last read it, but from what i remember that could go absolutely anywhere from silly little details to deeply scarring even if we just stick to what happens in the period Act One takes place in. I mean, arguably particularly then considering That One Thing. 😂

    If you haven't heard it already you should really listen to "The Color Purple" broadway cast recording. Cynthia Erivo - Elphaba - plays the lead, Celie, so you can get a grasp on her (incredible) voice, and overall it's just an amazing musical. You should also watch her perform "I'm Here" live, 'cause it is amazing.

    I don't thinking they will mix both acts, I believe that this first look is just like the first "Deathly Hallows" trailer. It was announced that it would be 2 parts but the first trailer showed footage of both movies. Later they had trailers for each part. Here is the same. Dorot3and the gang will appear only in the 2 movie. But I suspect that the hat shot in the beginning of trailer and Glinda in the bubble shot is probably the the beginning of the first movie, while there's the overture. And then the flowers field with people running will be they singing "good news! She's dead!".

    I don’t understand the confusion. Dorothy goes to see the Wizard and he tells her to kill the wicked witch and she does, bringing back her broomstick. That’s the story of the Wizard of Oz and the framework for the second Act of Wicked.

    • @Barbara2.0
      @Barbara2.0  Před 4 měsíci

      I may be wrong but in the show Elphaba locks Dorothy up before she has a chance to meet the wizard, right? Or does that happen after Dorothy has been sent by the wizard? But then, why would the scarecrow (aka Fyiero) be there? Sorry if I'm getting my facts wrong, it's been a while since I saw the show and even longer since I watched Wizard of Oz

    • @ferosha99
      @ferosha99 Před 4 měsíci

      No it happens after Dorothy meets up with the wizard. In the show, we never actually see this meeting (this must be a new scene added for the movie). Everything happens exactly as it does in The Wizard of Oz (broadly at least). Fiyero is turned into the scarecrow before Dorothy arrives and they meet as they did in Wizard of Oz. The implication (I think?) is that Scarecrow (Fiyero) doesn't follow Dorothy to go see the Wizard in search of a brain but secretly to find Elphaba.

    This trailer makes me incredibly skeptical of how much I will like this movie. If I don't find the 1st movie up to my expectations since it's one of my favorite musicals, I won't see the 2nd. The ending riff of DG is terrible. I know every witch does it their own way on stage, but I feel like this version doesn't work for me. Even though I love Cynthia, she's too old to play Elphaba. I say this knowing that older actors play the characters on stage, but for screen it's more obvious they aren't 19 yrs old in act 1. I'm doubtful Ariana can pull off the emotion and strength needed for Thank Goodness, and I personally don't find her that great of an actress compared to Cynthia. I'm too in love with the details of the musical and the book series to accept some of the changes we can see. That's my problem I know. Unless they're using the combination of every version of the story created, including the book which is way more adult and dark, not to mention adding more songs, I don't see how it will work as 2 whole movies. I haven't been happy with the musicals turned movie musicals that have come out in the last few years. I guess we'll see how the other trailers make me feel. I know I'm in the minority with this opinion. I'll try to be more flexible in my expectations and criticism, but like so many others, I have been waiting for this movie for a billion years and I dont want to be disappointed.
