    I agree that Glinda’s first outfit in the trailer is too muted compared with the other students’ clothes and her bubbly personality. I would have made it a dark rose pink to show that she is a bit rough around the edges when she’s with Elphaba and the pink gets a bit softer as they slowly become friends but the pink is still vibrant.

      @Jimmy-Mc Před 4 měsíci +11

    I kinda hope that this means we’ll see more of Dorthy & Friends, much like how we see the Wizard with them in his throne room. Perhaps, because of it being two movies and us having the time, we’ll be able to see Glinda first find Nessarose squashed under the house, and will see her have to hold herself together and send Dorothy off to the Emerald City with the Silver Shoes in order to keep them safe? Moments that we only see the tail of in the stage show where Dorothy’s journey directly overlaps with Glinda, Elphaba, and the Wizard. We see these iconic moments we know, and then we see the moment after with the characters we ‘re following in Wicked.

  • @brianapereira2694
    @brianapereira2694 Před 4 měsíci +6

    I didn't know they're making 2 movies. Why is that? And I'm torn on the inclusion of Dorothy and company. On one hand, it would be so cool to see them interact with this version's Elphaba. But I'm also wondering why they're doing that, if that makes sense. Wicked worked so well because it wasn't just a retelling: it was a whole new side of the story, and that helped us explore characters and the structure/rules of the world. What we took for granted as kids (a magical world where anything can happen), we see more of in the "older" version (it's corrupt and broken).
    I'm worried that they're gonna overshadow the main plot with the inclusion of the original story.

    I think Goldblum and Erivo are inspired casting, and from what we can see of Yeoh and Grande - they look promising in those roles! I do like that we see Galinda's chaperone from the novel, and I think part of them splitting into 2 movies is that it's potentially twice the ticket sales and revenue for the studio. Though, if they eff the first film up, the second may not pull the same amounts of moviegoers.

    I'm not very possessive over Wicked like I am with other shows becoming movie-musicals so I'm willing to keep a pretty open mind here. The only thing that disappointed me is the generic scoring choice for most of the trailer. Even if producers didn't want to showcase a lot of singing, Stephen Schwartz has written a musical complete with themes and leitmotifs. The scoring for the trailer could have at least attempted to draw from some of that.

    2:25 I agree. It is a really an interesting thing they are doing with movie musicals where they are not promoting the music heavily by not showing any scenes of the characters singing, which was apparently done due to the studios thinking they will get more ticket sales if they promote them that way. Specifically started recently this year with The Little Mermaid, Wonka, The Color Purple, and Mean Girls.

    The reason John M Chu split Wicked into two movies is because he was not allowed to extend the length of one movie to include all of the songs from the show. He experienced first hand the wrath of In The Heights fans when all of the Rosario’s songs were cut for time, and has seen similar backlash with movies like Dear Even Hansen, and he probably thought this was the best choice.

    Do we really need a wicked movie though? I honestly would prefer if musicals like Wicked or Hadestown just got pro shots released like Hamilton or Come from Away. Because for every In the Heights that actually does it well, there’s a Dear Evan Hansen that ends up turning people away from the original.
    I also hope the other trailers don’t do what the trailers for Wonka, Mean Girls, and The Color Purple did, where movie musicals pretend to not be musicals because “test audiences don’t think musicals can be cool and/or profitable”. Because people who don’t like musicals will only get pissed off when they pay for their movie tickets, sit down in the theaters, and realize they’ve been tricked into watching a musical.

    Well..this is a surprise! I wasn't expecting to see your face, but I love it either way. And with the Wicked trailer..I do love what I'm seeing, I admit. Everyone looks great. The only one I have actual concerns with is..well..Ariana Grande. Sure, she had origins in musical theater, but she's evolved since then and her music has become more pop in tastes. I'm not saying a pop singer can't do a great job in a musical..there has been a few exceptions. But when I think of Ariana Grande, I think the Taylor Swift casting in Cats. And god, we know how horrible that went with her Macavity number. Not to mention the controversies surrounding her with Jeannette McCurdy and some others.
    I'd love to be proven wrong, while I'm not the biggest fan of her vocals, feel like she doesn't enunciate properly and a bit gaspy in some of her songs. But she's the only one I've been concerned with, thus making me openly cautious about the film. I don't want to have a disastrous of a movie like Dear Evan Hansen, Mean Girls or Cats. I've waited too long for this.

    I think I read or heard somewhere (don’t remember from where or whom) that they were making two movies because Defying Gravity is such a tough act to follow and to make a whole second half of a movie after that would be really hard as it’s a literal act closer in the show.
    I can sort of see the logic in there and I do hope they can pull it off and give us more insight and development of the characters- Elphaba and Glinda and their relationship especially. But I’m also kinda concerned how they’re going to make it work for two movies.
    But other than that I am very excited and pleased with how this movie looks, the actors, the cinematography and everything, it looks great! There are some details, like you said Glinda’s wardrobe seems oddly muted considering her character, but other than that I am cautiously optimistic about the movie.

It just *looks* so generic (nightmares of Cats) and filled with faaaar too much cgi and (for me) this always overwhelms the music (again - Cats) and the beauty and FEEL of the music. What I love is the idea of casting a woman of color as Elphaba, with the fact that her skin color being different from everyone else being the clear sign of why her character is seen as misunderstood and not necessarily evil. I have to say: I'm more worried by the amount of glitzy CGI action scenes in the trailer. Not every movie needs to be an action movie, dammit! Sure, there is some action in Wicked ("Defying Gravity" comes to mind), but you can still keep that quite limited in its presentation, and play more into the drama of it all.

That is, as demon from Musical Hell, what are your thoughts on a certain musical set in Hell? I, of course, mean Hazbin Hotel. I'm genuinely curious, but it doesn't seem like the kind of thing you would want to tear apart. Other than your Know the Score segments, your channel usually doesn't offer praise.

      In the stage show, I believe that’s normal. In the Wizard of Oz book (which the story of Wicked is based off of/adapted from) they were silver as well. LOVE this! So great to see you! Also I agree the PINK needs to be PINKER but it seems like this sort of muted color palette is all the rage these days in films... The Little Mermaid suffered from it as well. I think it's done in an attempt to make things feel more "real" but I think it does a disservice to the aesthetics of the film... especially fantasy films. And I personally don't love that riff, it sounds a bit too drawn out and almost clumsy to me. The original has a more "cutting" feeling.

    I'm curious what they're going to do with Dorothy. She's kept off screen in the musical but now she's going to have a prominent role (maybe?). I think this a terrible idea if they're taking inspiration from the MGM film (like the musical) and aligning her storyline in Oz to the musical, but if they're taking more inspiration from the original book, this could work.

      I think this trailer was made for an audience watching the Super Bowl who might be more familiar with The Wizard of Oz than Wicked, and the shots were chosen strategically.

      @PelafinaLievre We do see Dorothy's silhouette in the musical to be fair. And as you said, she's in the book. I did a comparison essay on four texts in my last year of high school. I had to use one assigned text but I could choose the others, so I chose Wicked, Jane Eyre and Chinese Cinderella against a movie based on a Maurice Gee novel. My focus question was based on the theme of being an outsider, so I had to read the book over the winter holidays when I wasn't reading Jane Eyre (I'd already read Chinese Cinderella over and over).

But then, I was good at Shakespeare. I was going to do a Shakespearean paper at uni, but it got cancelled due to lack of interest - there weren't enough students. I suppose I could have used a play as one of my texts (we had to have three texts, which is why I had a film, an autobiographical book and two novels), but my choices were partly because of the outsider theme and I can't think of any Shakespeare plays that I know well enough that would fit in with my research questions. So I understand thinking galinda’s costumes may be lacking in the shade of pink, but in the original Broadway show her popular dress is the only pink she wears. Her shiz uniform is a cream (like fiyero’s pants, that people think are white cause stage lighting), and she’s in blues and greens for the rest of the show (besides the yellow in one short day). Id say Ariana’s costumes seem more of a gentle reference to Glinda’s dress from the wizard of oz film (which also wasn’t super intense and more of a pastelle).

    Also, is it just me or does Cynthia Erivo look really young as Elphaba? I know she's in her mid-30s, but she doesn't look it in the makeup.

    I think the reason for splitting this movie in half is because Jon M Chu with the producers saw Dune's way of telling the whole story without taking out important plot beats and thought they can do the same thing for Wicked; due to the fact that they don't want to sacrifice the parts and aspects of the musical that made it work.

      The musical isn’t THAT long though, they could make it into a 2 and a half hour movie. It’s not the same as splitting a giant-ass book in half, musicals have two acts and we’re only getting one. It’s not going to work as two movies.

    I really hate the color grading. It seems like every live action movie these days needs to have, for lack of a better term, the "Gritty Realism" filter applied to it. I personally think that it defeats the magical and otherworldy atmosphere that the show goes for. Part of me is wondering if there is a bias toward highly saturated colors in stage musicals just because in large theater, much of the audience is too far away to see detail and needs something to visually anchor voices to characters, whereas in film, the camera can be set at any distance which allows for more details to be seen by more of the audience, so it's easier for people to visually anchor themselves in the show.

    I have never seen Wicked on stage, but I'm looking forward to seeing this movie! It seems to be the trend for "Stealth Musicals" The Color Purple and Mean Girls were both released without musical numbers in their trailers and commercials. In the wake of "Cats", it seems the way to go for studios is advertise musicals without the music (or only a small amount of it). "In The Heights" and the reboot of "West Side Story" performed better on streaming than the multiplex. Though the Covid lockdowns and their aftermath likely had a lot to do with that. I saw both of those films in the theater and loved them. Anyway, I think every knows by now that Wicked is a musical so I would be interested in seeing the reception of moviegoers. Hopefully, this will do really well.

    I wonder will they add the ending from the novel, I doubt it, which I am fine with as I enjoy the musical as its own thing, I am just wary as I love Wicked so I'd prefer not to see it ruined by Hollywood. Honestly, I'd prefer it if they released a recording of the stage musical, but I don't think we're gonna get that treat anytime soon.
    I read Elephaba's "I am" line when Glinda says "You're green" as Elephaba being surprised and actually asking Glinda for conformation, which obviously doesn't make sense since she was born green, maybe it was just the line delivery but it didn't come off as sarcasm to me which is kind of weird.
    Yea, I too am baffled over why they have split this in two, what about Wicked in particular needs it's second half to come out an entire year later? You can't even argue that it's to try to better reflect the West End/Broadway show because Act 1 and 2 are separated by a short interveinal, not a year-long gap.
    I'll reserve judgement till I've seen it, but I am fairly wary.
