Today I want to share my thoughts, images and video during my one week with the Leica 35 Summicron f/2 APO Lens for the L mount SL camera system. Is this the best 35mm lens EVER? Well, maybe...maybe not but one thing is certain, it's as good as it gets in L mount! There's one small flaw though, doesn't bother me but had to mention it!
I share photo samples from this 35mm as well as some of my other favorite 35mm lenses. I discuss who this lens is for, and why you may want to check it out!
Enjoy!

Love your new Leica reviews. Keep them coming!
Thanks for a great review!
Love the look
Gorgeous!
Nice review. I just wonder of you have a chance to compare it with Sigma 35/2 DN DG?
Beautiful images. Also those chairs on the porch are gorgeous, did you buy them or make them yourself?
Falling in love has always been expencive :-)
Hi there. Have you tried or tested the 24-90? How would you place it along the 35 apo? Thank you so much.
What about Leica-R 35mm ROM, did you try with Leica SL camera? I’m not asking about sharpness and other modern lens characteristics. Thanks.
Have you tried the Voigtländer 35mm 2.0 APO-Lanthar ?
With 5k the images are sure beautiful!
Such an amazing lens. Technically outstanding corner to corner. A beautiful modern clinical rendering. You can shoot overexposed into the sun with zero CA. The 35 and 75 make a great pair on the SL2.
Which 70mm do you shoot with?
@@joansmith7649 sorry my spelling mistake. Meant 75mm.
@@jeitoots Which 75 are you using? The L APO 75mm? That's what I use.
@@joansmith7649 I’ve not tried that. I use a 75 APO SL and sometimes the 75 Summarit-M. Both great but the SL is really amazing.
Hi.
I want to buy a Leica camera. If you had to choose between the M11 and the SL2-S. What do you choose ?
Thank you.
Your comments on “bargain” lens is so apt. Beautifully summarised. This lens is beyond compare and is the best “bargain” today. And the 35mm M APO lens- which is so close to this lens in performance - is even more of a bargain given its incredibly small size and compactness (you will see when you get to review it). They could have charged 50%! more for it. It’s the first 35mm M lens that surpasses the original 35mm (double) Aspherical lens which you reviewed sometime ago. A beautiful harbinger of things to come. Just FYI, the new 28mm Apo L lens is also extremely close to performance of this 35mm Apo L lens and again produces a “medium format” look - just imagine that on a 28mm! The 24mm and 21mm L Apo lens are still to come. Absolutely astounding imagine quality in these lens for price points.
The 28 is not even close. It has horrible distortion which needs to be corrected digitally, with all the consequences for sharpness and microcontrast. (BTW, Leica publishes its MTF charts befor digital corrections.) I agree on the 35 Apo-Summicrons though.
Its crazy that Leica makes a 8k dollar apo 35, and this one is considered the 'bargain' at 5k for lens that is better than the m version..
A reason for the price difference seems to be size. It is significantly more complex and laborious to pack quality like this into a lens body like the M-Summicron than it is with significantly more space like there is in the SL-series lenses.
What is "ultimate character"?
Sony Xperia 1 Mark || is the winner of the camera business because he uses the best Zeiss lenses at the moment
That little grinding noise is Leica's cash register racking up the profits. Voightlander APO Lanthar 35mm f/2 $1150.
and it seems the E version is better than M version?
Autofocus costs another few thousand.
If I can only buy one lens for the sl2s, which one should it be: SL 50mm f2 apo or SL 35mm f2 apo?
35 apo bar none
@@esanctuary I agree. try renting both. the 35mm is jaw droppingly good!
Ive got the 50, so sharp. 28 next for me
Couldn’t wait to click on this one
Every image Ive seen from this lens is above and beyond anything currently in existence, for a lens with such amazing performance, Its hard to wrap my head around more people not shooting with it, its. one of the first lenses with a max aperture of 2 but shoots like a 1.4 because of the design. Love this lens.
Prophet I’m saving my coins for this one big time. Want to pair it with my SL 75mm APO. One two punch 🥊
@@rumporridge1 I cant tell you how many times I passed up this lens, I even found a used but like new condition with most of the warranty still on fredmiranda for like 3700 bucks and I still passed on it, but then I started seeing images this lens produces, and I realized the review that dxo mark gave the lens could not have been correct, Ive seen the images this lens makes and its almost hard to believe how good it is. Right now Ive been rocking the 50lux SL, which is my favorite 50mm ever made, the 24-90 and the 90-280, which I think are the best zooms ever made. Im not sure if I want the 35mm or the 28mm because I seem to want to get wider with my shots these days, but either of those lens will be show stoppers. They are sharp without looking lifeless like alot of the other brands.. The contrast and the way the image draws makes them seem like a stop faster than they are. They are incredible.
@@CryoftheProphet you’ve mention every single lens I would ever want and need to build back my glass line up. Sold all of my equivalent L lenses. And yes indeed those zooms are the best ever made, at least to my eye. I’ve seen the capability of those lenses and was floored by their rendering. Thanks for the response Prophet.
Answer: Most Leica users are well off financially. However, most are not professional photographers who know what they are doing. So it is not surprising that you will not see examples of work that will demonstrate this lens' capability. One's being rich does not equate to one's being artistic.
i have the Leica 30mm for my Panasonic. superior colors. $500
My SL 35mm makes NO noise when focusing.
As a Leica shooter......nonBias.....it's a wonderful tool the SL2 is !!!! But it is not a work horse camera if you ask me. Until they decide to offer some real support for external flash other than there own speed lights I'll say if you have anything in the new SL line you probably have a canon or Nikon in your bag. It's just a tool....I'll shoot any Gun it's lol. Go APO ....
One year later…..Profoto and Flashpoint in the Leica realm. Great times indeed.
The unspeakable things I would do for a SL-2…😅
great review. Would you say that the 50 APO is just as good ?
That’s the exact question I have too. Can we consider all the SL summicron have the same IQ? I hear 35 is the best.
I have both the 35apo and 50apo they are equally perfect
@@gemmakeller5073 I was going to get the 24-90 first, but everything I see from the 35 APO looks so good. I might just get one of the APOs first and use a cheaper Sigma zoom for events. Cant get all at once :)
ive got the 50, very happy with it
@@jukeboxjohnnie i ended up getting the 50 Lux SL
The one flaw? It’s not a 50 ❤️
Stand back from the subject two extra feet and it becomes a 50.
The Zeiss Otus 55/1.4 is better and is $2000 cheaper.
Not better, different. This is also a 35mm lens, not 55mm. This lens has auto focus, the Zeiss is manual focus. The Zeiss is also much larger. Finally, an adapter would be needed for the Zeiss on an SL which would make it even larger. I have reviewed the 55 Otus long ago and agree it is fantastic if you want a 55 1.4 that is larger and manual focus. But if you want a native 35mm lens for your L mount camera that has AF and gorgeous IQ this lens is the one to beat. In fact, there are none that beat it in L mount.
Why do you say it is better?
I can't justify paying over $5k on a 35mm f/2 that isn't technically special in any way, but if it makes you happy to use it and you have the cash to spare then good for you,
What other L-mount lens has the resolution of the Leica Summicron SL 35 mm f/2?
Um, looking for your latest camera review and stumbled onto a bunch of post from people who really don’t like you, but not as a reviewer of camera gear. To my surprise they dislike your(I still can’t believe it)claiming you talk to the freaking dead via what looks like a small amp, a coat hanger and two sticks? Is that a joke gone wrong? Not judging you at all. Just taken by surprise and especially since no one else seems to know about this?is it your evil twin?
Lets get a shot pf that forehead
Think about this for a second. A good photographer is going to take better photos than these with his iPhone.
And btw there’s nothing remarkable about a 35mm f2 prime being smaller than a 24-70mm prime. It should actually be a lot smaller.
Both the fact that that the 35 mm f/2 is faster than the 24-70 mm f/2.8 zoom and Leica’s AF motor design limit how small their SL lenses can be.
