This special type of engineers that could never get loud or excited about their product. Because they know that they made the best product possible. Period. You gotta love them.
Great little insight in the product development and philosophy behind Leica engineering. And thank you for giving this man and his team the well deserved attention.

Such an astute comment. I could watch this video many times -and have - just to absorb the excellence and raw cerebral horsepower that embodies every facet of Leica... So quiet, so comfortable in the true understanding of something so few could ever fully embrace...all with a quiet confidence, complete with his own style and gentle smile. Sooooo German in the best of all possible ways. Yeah I can say that, as that half of my family has lived in the area surrounding Wetzlar and Frankfurt for over 300 years. Farmers and tradesmen mostly, this generation deeply involved in many hand-on aspects of industrial engineering and design that this area of Germany is so steeped in precise tradition.

Fascinating interview. So Leica made their APS-C line of lenses too good so they decided they had to make the next gen full frame lenses even better to maintain a differential. The more I learn about Leica the more I understand why they are held in such esteem. They don't sit on their laurels, if they chose to they have a lot to sit on, instead they just concentrate on producing quality. Would love to own one. *edit* Oh-Oh, just bookmarked the Leica UK store in my browser.

Thank you for that Video! For me Peter is a hero. His work is impressive. The Lenses are the secret treasure of leica. A lot of Camera Companys have very good lenses but leica is outstanding and Peter is the reason why they are that good. A lot of lenses are very good tools for Photography work but his lenses are more than that. They are pieces of Art.
The world is very unfair. Models are superstars everyone knows there Faces, but nobody cares who took the photo and even less people care who build the lenses. I am saving my money for one of this lenses, lot of my friends are lough at me because i want to spent that much money on a lens. "The Canon 85mm 1.8 is the same and costs 10% of the price" but we all know thats not true. This lenses are something special. I dont think Peter will read this but, THANK YOU! and keep on going building these lenses! There are People out there they care about your work and love the final products!

  • @vicibox
    @vicibox Před 4 lety +4

Well you finished with a statement that I found life affirming; you said you could tell the difference on a low resolution image. Hallelujah!!! It seems that most photograp[hers cant notice this effect but, to my eye, it seems marked. I noticed this the very first time I used my, then new and still favourite, Leica X113 with 23mm f1.7 Summilux. After 50 years it changed my photography forever and I suddenly started taking hyperfocal panaramic street photos. So to shorten an even longer story, microtones are a key to understanding this; I call this lens transparency and presence and all great low glass primes have it; they produce hyperfocal images that seem to be completely alive and real. Its not about sharpness, though most of these classic lenses are sharp. This property enables great lenses to separate a sharp subject from a sharp background by tone alone; given how much I hate bokeh you can bet all my present lenses have this property in spades ;-)

very nice interview , nicely done .... they way Leica people promote themselves and Leica in interview and on camera really changes the way you think about the company , I think we get into a polarised opinion of Leica based on the price of the products , however I don't think you could come across a nicer set of people and a company, I am really starting to see the appeal and why the Leica employees are so loyal.. they really do promote the brand very well,. these interviews for the sl2 launch , I have watched 2 now this one and the one by the Ozzie, and in both cases the Leica guys have been very impressive in their interviews and they are both very interesting ...

If I could swing it I'd buy the SL2 in a New York minute, make that a second, and then I'd be faced with the dilemma of which of a stable of excellent glass to purchase. I'd likely get the 24-90 simply because it covers the range of 80% of the images I take. Add a 135 and I would be about good.

Roger Cicala (LensRentals guy) recently published an article about ultra-high frequency lens resolution testing, and includes some examples at 192&200lp/mm and 240lp/mm
    www.lensrentals.com/blog/2019/10/more-ultra-high-resolution-mtf-experiments/
He doesn't measure Leitz lenses for this post, just Zeiss OTUS, Sigma ART and Canon L, however the L mount available lenses which are especially interesting in this regard are: the ART40mmF1.4 and ART105mmF1.4
Excerpt: "...We’ll start with the usual “Roger had expectations and was disappointed” part, because, after all, disappointment is the sole purpose of expectations. One of the reasons I was excited about testing new lenses was that the Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM had the best normal-range MTF scores we’d ever seen, besting the Sigma 135mm f/1.8 Art. It seemed logical that it might also best the Sigma in ultra-high resolution tests. Reality 1, Logic 0. We tried the lens at f/4, but it was actually a bit better at f/5, which we show below. At high frequency, it’s not as good as the Sigma..."
"...The 35mm Lens Whose Name Cannot Be Spoken: You’ve seen the best results we had from lenses you could actually buy and use. We did see one lens that you can’t purchase, a prototype lens that will probably never be made, that was truly amazing, particularly for a 35mm focal length..."

Chris, Jordan & the team at dpreview are terrific. If you want the best AF in the business, that’s Sony. Contrast detect only AF is not as good at the margin. But for the kind of shooting we do, it works quite well. With THIS written, however, shooting the Sigma 35/1.2 wide-open IS a dicey proposition for ANY contrast detect system in anything but excellent light.

Great vid. Haha you got him.....send him a mail from me asking him if it’s a platform with shared parts making manufacturing cheaper. When will Leica be passing that on to us mere mortal amateurs? I mean volume = lower price right....lol....iam working my way to a discount here....the hand built one off stuff is but a myth! Well the prices are not I will grant you. Fella your missis gonna kill you...you bought another camera and lens! Love it!

Nice interview but I don't agree.
What made Leica lenses famous was the ability to show the three-dimensionality of the elements in the photos and separation of the subject and background, providing a unique plasticity.
If I want lenses with huge resolution and a flat reproduction I buy sigma, too many lens inside looking corner to corner resolution is a Huge error, what's why many cinematographers use now Cooke lenses looking back for 3D.
Another issue is the autofocus, for 6000 euros The minimum requirement is to have the same AF performance as the Sony A9.

I understand your reasoning here but keep in mind with the SL summicron lenses they have mostly addressed the three-dimensionality but having the contrast extremely high at the plain of focus and the contrast dips dramatically (intentionally) away from the focus point to give the look of a 1.4 lens
