    David, that's correct. SL2 focus tracking only works in medium or low speed continues modes. Mathphotographer's video is misleading.

  • @allenchiu9664
    @allenchiu9664 Před 4 lety +6

    For the SL2, please note that at continuous high speed, focusing is only done at the first shot and used for following shots in same sequence. the camera will continuous focus only on medium speed or lower. Your shots at high speed serial sequences has focusing on the first shot only.

      This is interesting, so are you saying that if you are in high speed burst mode focus will stay at where the first shot is taken? This would then explain why my tracking results are so poor
      So if someone walks towards you focus will remain on the first point of focus and not track the person?

    Very nice review, however, I usually shoot portraits at f/2.0 or even f/1.4! Thus, I would be more interested if eye AF still works with shallower dof! Using f/5.6 at 50 mm focal length, I am able to get most photos sharp in comparable situations even with a manual focus Leica M10 ;-) ...

    Thanks Math. Great video. I just got my SL2. If I understand your explanation, focus tracking is good for moving object. I tried to shoot flying bird using 1/2000s. Result is not bad. I don’t mind to share my photo with you.

    Another excellent review. I do wonder would this camera with a Leica 90-280 f2.8/f4 autofocus be fast enough in AF mode suitable for football or motorcycle racing?

    Hi, Can only agree with your results and William's observations above : SL and SL2 with IBIS are surprisingly accurate and sharp for moving subjects despite the nay sayers about its CD AF system. I used it extensively this winter to capture free style skiing tricks in snow parks in the Swiss Valais. I began with an XT3 but quickly just left it at home. Its AF may have been good but image sharpness was non-comparable to the 24-90 and, indeed, the 90-280mm lens. I cannot pretend to compare them with the 'real' sports shooting machines but I was smiling from ear to ear when I saw the results. I bought it as a high res system to use in the high alps, especially in winter, for monochromatic landscape shots for 5/6 months of the year. I did not have high expectations of it for action. I do not really do action shots. However, the accuracy of the system just kept egging me on to try more. Probably ski tricks are an intermediate category - sometimes unpredictable appearance as a jumper comes over a kicker, sometimes higher or wider than you think but generally they are moving in a line toward or away from the focal plan so not quite like tracking an erratic football or hockey match.

      That’s very interesting as I’ve been shooting xt2 now XT3 for many years now. I have been considering the SL2 and now as writing the SL2-S. I do a lot of travelling and like the lightness of the Fuji, though since selling off all my canon full frame gear a few years back when I stopped shooting weddings I do miss full frame. The one thing I would really miss though is the tilt screen that I have on the Fuji. I use it so much.

    I have the sl2-s which I imagine is the same as the SL2 in terms of focus tracking. I find the tracking poor on the SL2-s. In burst mode the actual focus point completely disappears so you have no idea where your focus point is and it becomes a guessing game. Donyou have that issue or do I have the camera set up incorrectly

    Hi Math, another great video. Please let us know your exposure settings for the unicycle shoot? I’m guess Auto ISO but how about exposure mode and resulting shutter speed/aperture? Thanks!

  • @williaminbody205
    @williaminbody205 Před 4 lety +2

    Yeah the “slow auto focus” crowd have always used this as an excuse to eliminate SL or SL2 from consideration as a sports camera....or any consideration at all, they couldn’t be any more wrong. I’m convinced that the number of focus points is Leica’s secret to making a contrast system work. My SL has 529 focus points, there simply isn’t any camera by any manufacturer that comes even close, and it’s auto focus stands right up next others with better images too... I just used the SL at a soccer match with a manual focus Voigtländer lens and zone focused the whole shoot in continuous high...never miss focus....lol. Liberating. I knew were I was going to be seated and what position my subject was going to play, I walked off the distances, first half second half did some calculations set lens, confirmed with focus peeking during warn ups and never looked back...

    I wondering if the AF of the 50mm Cron is better than reported sloppy AF of the Summilux 50mm SL

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  Před 4 lety

      According to what I know, the 50mm SL APO Summicron's autofocus is way of better than the autofocus of the 50mm SL Summilux - Leica themselves explain on their website how they improved the autofocus for the Summicron - which also hit the market later than the Summilux.

      Hi Kevin, I set it up as shown in the video, drive mode and then how quick you want to have the burst mode. Worked very well on my SL2 as shown in the video. Make sure you are - besides drive mode - also do the other settings as shown in the video like, for instance, AF-C and not AF-S.

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  Před 3 lety +1

      Would have to look this up since it is some time ago but typically as follows: fast shutter speed (at least 1/1000sec), ISO on Auto, aperture at f/5.6 give or take. Focus tracking at body tracking, continuous autofocus, central metering (not spot necessarily).
