      @astraeusone Před 4 lety +3

      They are all perceptibly better, about 10-25% subjectively speaking - which is in now way the definitive answer for everyone else. (:

      @mathphotographer  Před 4 lety +2

      Hard to judge without a proper lab test ... both lens line-ups are great and I use them both. The SL lenses are newer developed so should have newest optical research insights incorporated but honestly I love the M and the SL versions of those lenses.

      Leica SL lenses are sharp but it goes beyond that with the way they capture the way our eyes naturally perceive things. Organic, analog. Wood, metal, and fabric appear more real and natural. Like a 4x5 film camera on steroids.

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  Před 4 lety +5

      In general, if I had to choose one focal length only, independent of what camera and brand, I would go for 50mm. Having said that, I also shoot frequently cameras with fixed and non-exchangeable prime lens like the 28mm on my Leica Q2, and I love 28mm as well as 35mm. For astro and night sky I go even wider, 21mm or 18mm. On shift lenses for architecture, a focal length of around 20mm is perfect. So it depends. In the video, I shoot 50mm until 12:50 and thereafter I almost exclusively shoot 35mm.

    Quick question, how does the 50 apo M f2 compare to the SL version? Please and thank you.

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  Před 4 lety

      Very much comparable, I like and use both lens line-ups. The SL versions are newer developed and should incorporate newest research on optics but I guess when it comes to sharpness it depends. In general the SL2 has a newer sensor than most M rangefinders so the combo of SL2 plus SL APO should win a lab test but on the flip side of the coin if you combine an M APO lens with the newly developed M10 Monochrom that M combo will very likely beat the SL2 plus SL APO in a sharpness competition :) As said, both versions are excellent. What is really stunning on the SL APO 50mm is its spot-on autofocus at wide-open aperture (see czcams.com/video/_SGrYYsAGoM/video.html). Combining sharpness wide-open and a fast autofocus is rare and I am not aware of any other lens that delivers that in the same way.

      Thanks so much for that feedback. I do have an M10 and love it very much. I have two M lenses and a few voigtlander lenses, as well. I also have an SL 2 with 3 apo SL primes and they are to die for. But I do want to expand my M system as well. I’ve been doing some research about zeiss and voigtlander and such, and every 50 mm I look at, I keep going back to the apo. But man, is it expensive. I have the 50 0.95 and 75 1.25 Noctilux and I absolutely LOVE those two lenses. But the 0.95 is a character lens, to me that is. So, that APO 50 M would be one of those razor sharp edge to edge lenses. And I would love to add it in my bag. But not sure if I can bring myself to getting it if the SL comes close. The reality is that I don’t have an M10 mono, yet. So I guess I need some clarification and a “push” to move forward lol. Anyway, thanks again for your feedback and great videos you produce.

      @mathphotographer  Před rokem

      Thanks, but we will not purchase the two new Summicron-SL for our studio because we already own and regularly shoot the Apo-Summicron-SL 35 and 50, and they are better, sharper and as fast in autofocus as the new Summicrons. The new Summicrons are an alternative to the already established Apo-Summicrons with same focal lenghts for Leica-SL shooters who prefer even lighter (less weight) lenses for a much more affordable price tag. For photographers who already own and shoot the Apo-Summicron-SL 35 and 50, these two new lenses are not really interesting.

    Question, the images you shared are out of camera or are they already with editing done?

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  Před 4 lety +3

      They have been post-processed from RWA (.dng) into JPG - otherwise they would not appear on video, clearly. I never use JPGs out of the camera. But I typically do only minor tweaking in post, do not want to over-do it, so likely the JPGs out of camera already looked good. I import the .dng-files right away into Lightroom or Capture One after a shooting, do not spend much time with the out-of-camera JPGs.

    "Line-Up is growing steadily"? I'm waiting since the SL release, back in 2015 for a telephoto-lens, so at least 400mm fl or above, none so far in 2020, not even announced for 2021 neither by Leica nor the L-mount alliance (what are they doing?)

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  Před 4 lety +1

      Not really in my real life shootings, but if you close the aperture to the max you might notice a nuance of softening when cropping in deeply. Up to f/16 or even a little more closed is absolutely fine in my experience.

    Hİ,
    I am a landscape photographer coming from gfx medium format system to SL2. As you can know i am very pickey for edge to edge sharpness. GFX system has that but without dimention and lifelike warmness of leica glass. My lens setup depends ın the prime lens i choose. If i go with 35mm apo then the set will be Sigma 14-24mm , 35mm apo ,75mm apo. If i choose 50mm apo then 16-35mm,50mm apo and 90mm apo.. Sould i listen Karbe and buty the best one which is 35mm apo or 50mm apo is also as good? Which one is more medium format like sharp but has the 3d drawing of leica more? Thanks

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  Před 3 lety +1

      The Leica body+lens combos have this unique "Leica look" which likely is what you describe as "dimension" ... On your question on medium format look (which is a different topic), to some extent this also appears different to full frame because of the medium format typical aspect ratio which is different to full frame. And the larger sensor size of medium format has positive influence on DoF and the special look of images.

    • @ahmedgencal5315
      @ahmedgencal5315 Před 3 lety

      @@mathphotographer My question was mostly about 35mm apo or 50mm apo :) I wil start to set up my system either with 35 or 50mm SL apo. I want to know which one you think has more of that leica look?

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  Před 3 lety

      Sorry Ahmed for missing your point :) If you look for that Leica look I would prefer the 50mm since this is the "normal" focal length matching the field of view of the human eyes. You can do landscape, street, portraits, and almost everything with 50mm and if you open the aperture to f/2 you will get that special "3D-pop" into your images. There is only one caveat to that statement: if you want to do landscape only/exclusively, you might appreciate more the 35mm due its wider angle. But if you want a "universal" lens with the perfect Leica look the 50mm would be my personal recommendation.

  • @jimmason8502
    @jimmason8502 Před 4 lety +6

    The SL2 costs about $6,000 and the Summicron SL 35mmf2 costs another $5,000. And for that $11,000 you can take some very sharp and boring photos. Photographers and CZcamsrs tend to focus on the gear and that gear's "image quality" instead of focusing on the "quality of the image." It' should be about how the photographer uses the kit, not the kit.

      @vadimhsu5114 Před 4 lety +4

      The 35mm and 50mm SL APO Summicron paired with the SL2 are the pinnacle of optical quality - they are simply stunning and unmatched. The look of the result is unique and unmistakably “Leica.” To those who have experienced and know the performance and resultant product, often without the need for extensive or ANY post production editing. I would agree with Jim here though in the sense that NO gear will make you a better photographer, but the kind of optical performance of these 2 lenses (and other SL lenses designed byPeter Karbe) when matched to the SL2’s performance especially with 15 stops of dynamic range at 47 MP, ISO ranges with minimal noise, and in-body stabilization, will help you - and hopefully inspire you - to make the best photographs that only your own skill limits. Yeah, the gear is expensive, but so are most of the best things in life. Look at what most people waste their money on over a lifetime. This will nourish your creative soul in ways that other lesser gear cannot.
