I have a paperwhite 8GB (the now previous model), I’m a college student, I have all my pdf and articles on my kindle, all my clases of the quarter and sometimes the previous quarter, and a lot of my personal ebooks and pdf, I only have an storage use of 702 MB. Congrats on 10k! I pre-ordered the new standard Paperwhite, since I don’t use Audible or read graphic novels. I figured by the time I filled up 8gb with books, it would be time to upgrade anyway. I read a lot and seem to amass books (physical and digital) and I think 8gb is plenty, even for the big fantasy books I prefer.

I bought a new Oasis to replace my Voyage, due to the fact that the print on the Voyage started fading. When I turned the page, the next page would be quite a bit lighter and I'd have to go back a page then forward, and then it would be OK. Doing this every page was a pain. Although I like the Oasis, I think the Voyage was a better device. I traded in the Voyage, but only got 10 dollars for it.

I do like to keep my books on my Kindle at all times, apart from audio books due to their file sizes and the shear amount I have. Another form of storage guzzler is Manga/Comics/Graphic Novels, though, which love. Thankfully, I did purchase the Signature Edition as my current storage usage is at 9.69 GB with 17.61 GB free. Whilst I don’t in anyway disagree with any of the advise given in this video, I did want to share my views from a different type of reader/personality type. Thanks for the great content.

I'm probably weird, but I like to have ALL my eBooks and Audible books on my Kindle so I don't have to worry about wi-fi availability, download times (especially for Audible books) so on my Kindle Paperwhite (it next to my computer, the Oasis is in the bedroom for insomnia nights) I have 14GB used, 13GB free.
I have 286 eBooks and 380 Audible books. That includes some anthologies for some authors so I can dip into their works as the mood takes me. I've had a Kindle since about 2010 (Kindle 3) and been an Audible subscriber since 2011.

I usually have a few books that I am reading at a time. And that takes up hardly any memory. But I download all of my e-books (600+) because I don’t want to be caught without access to wi-fi when I want to read or review the highlights of a particular book. I have the Oasis 32gb model and I’ve filled up about 50% of available memory with e-books. 8gb would definitely have not been enough.

My current 2gb PW from 2013 has roughly 400 books and maybe 2 or 3 smallish pdf’s and still has room available, so the 8gb version will be fine for me since the auto-adjust lighting and wireless charging are two features I’m not the least bit interested in.

Assuming you’re buying your books (from Amazon) and not pirating them and using Calibre - 8 GB of storage is way more than enough.
A single book is maybe what? Half a MB? That’s 16,000 books.
Even if you add comics, they’re not that big. Even reference books which don’t look great on eink are not that big.
The only reason is for Audible which can take 1 GB with ease.
But yes, I would like to see a single person who have bought 16k books from Amazon and ran out of space.
Instead, most people just download entire free libraries with thousands of titles, upload them all and barely read at all.
So yes. Even one GB would be enough because you’re not reading all those books at once. Ten books in memory would be enough for a vacation while you are away from an internet connection.

I was hesitant to get 8gb because I'm worried about my books. So what I did is I created new Google Drive account and I uploaded all of my books there.
I have 300+ books, those are EPUB and PDF files. And my PDF books are Medical textbooks that has 1,000 pages.
But guess what, for more than 300 books epub and large pdfs I only used 4gb out of 15gb (from google drive)
So I'll probably get 8gb. Because I might delete books that I finished reading.. And for audio books, I don't think I need it.
But I hope that PW has yellow light from signature :( because my eyes hurt with blue light.
I think I don't have to worry with epub format because amazon announced that mobi format will be replaced with epub this coming August, so I'm excited to get a Kindle PW 8gb. I wish they will release a white kindle in the future :(

Yeah, that was what I was thinking too. Also, reading digital comic books or manga would be superior on phones or tablets anyways due to some extra features. I figured the kindle is best for reading pure text, anything else can be done sufficiently on other devices. Audio books in particular you don't need to even look at a screen that much. It's not like you only have access to your library on a kindle. You can download the kindle app on virtually any device. This is my reasoning for choosing the 8 gb of the recent paperwhite lol.

Really, all you have to do to increase storage capacity is buy a tablet with a very large ROM storage and SD storage and keep you excess audio books (you will then be able to play them over Bluetooth to any speaker device or listen through conventional wired headphones) in your tablet.

    As a breakdown I have : 751 books, 153 documents, 91 newspapers/magazines, 54 audiobooks and 37 graphic novels.

How many books have you got?

  • @skynet_cyberdyne_systems

Well, I have around 200 PDF(approximately, could be much more, not really counted) books on my Ipad. Total space occupied by all these 200 books is 9.38 GB. So a 16GB Kindle is more than enough even if you use PDF extensively..

8 gb it's enough. Are like 3000 big ebooks (1000 pages per ebook).

My old Kindle 2 has 3 GB, and just over 400 books, including some textbooks and reference books (large files). I only have 424 MB room left, but that's still loads of room if I wanted to put more books on it.

Thanks for covering this topic since it's not clearly listed how far 8g will get you. I just orded the 8g and with the cloud storage backup. I feel good about my purchase.

I have the 32gb version of oasis and I need 32gb, I have 10gb of audio books and around 800 books and lots of manga series in pdf.
Cloud storage is not for me, I like having access to everything.

umm my experience is slightly different (I make no claim to either a normal reader or not - I don't know nor do I care what constitutes a 'normal' reader
    - I already hit the limit on my 32GB a couple of times - which became annoying - not because it was full but because it got stuck in limbo state with partially downloaded books when I tried syncing my library to my device - multiple download queues would start but bork at some point before completing -
    - a few dozen graphic novel/manga will easy fill it - I ended up removing those but still have 3.2 GB used with just the text based books.
my biggest gripe isn't so much with the device but the horrible UX menu/setting structure, file management, category management, filtering - the filtering is almost useless if you have several hundred or thousand books - and the desktop reader is just as gimped - both the desktop app and the browser based web app.
it doesn't help that Amazon site's product tagging/category classifications used, particularly for series has much room for improvement (that's about as polite as I can describe it)
I can imagine librarian's looking at it with shock and horror.

When I got the new 2021 standard Kindle this week I looked at the free amount available after I installed the latest firmware but before I downloaded any books. It shows 5.97 Gigs free of the 8 gig total on the device.
I will only put books on it so thanks for making it understandable that 8 Gigs will be more than enough!!

@@Maneetpaul hello. I saw your video about a 16 Gig variant now available for the standard 2021 PW.
I decided to see what how much space I had on my 8 gig kindle after 8 months of nearly daily use since my last post above. I had 5.97 to start I just now checked under device Info and I have 5.93 still available. I don’t remove books after I download them.
Thank you again sir for this video!! 8 gigs will last me a lifetime on this device. My use case is only e-books downloaded and 1 PDF file I use. There are no audiobooks, manga, comics or other documents on my Kindle.

I am now only down to 5.90 gigs. So that’s 70 megabytes in the year and a half of just downloading books.
Now part of this is I do use KINDLE UNLIMITED a lot so those books do come off as I return them. I still download and keep any books I buy from Amazon even the $0.00 priced books.
8 gigs is truly more than I will ever use. Thanks for this video Maneetpaul!

Budget permitting, you can't have too much storage.

Storage space only matters for Asian text.
So if you plan to read in Japanese or Chinese get the 32GB.
    Harry Potter English is 488KB
    Harry Potter Japanese is 20MB
This because Asian text use more ink which is more data same were why Manga and comics use more data.

I wish I had this video when I was buying my Kindle last month. I originally was going to buy the 32gb version but I found out that you can have thousands of books with the 8gb one so I saved around ÂŁ30 getting the 8gb Kindle Oasis. I feel like it's a bit scummy to advertise 8gb but you only get 6gb. I feel like that information should be made clear to the consumer incase a person who doesn't know technology well doesn't feel cheated. Luckily I knew this but it still feels a bit scummy for companies to do. I feel like it's wrongful advertising.

An 8Gb Kindle is USELESS. Almost the entire storage capacity is taken up with Amazon apps that you don't want, will never use, but cannot uninstall and cannot move to the SD Card. Avoid Kindles at all costs, you buy it, but it is used SOLELY by Amazon to promote their OWN products.
