    I really loved the Genesis, I wanted it to work when I bought my G80 in 2021, but the dealership experience ruined it and forced me to trade it for a brand I knew I could trust to be there to service my car when I needed it serviced. I bought the car from a dealership around 200 miles away, I live in a decent sized southern city in the US, about 200k people. We have dozens and dozens of dealerships for everything except supercar dealerships. I chose not to buy from the local Hyundai/Genesis dealership because they only had SUVs in stock. So I bought a G80 from the dealership I mentioned earlier, 200 miles away..this is very important. I knew with the local dealership I could get service and warranty work so, no brainer great deal. Fast forward to my first oil change about a year later ( i don't drive a whole lot, maybe 5k miles a year) and i book an appointment with the local genesis Hyundai dealership for my first maintenance. I get there and check in, and the first thing the service manager says is..."I don't see you in our system...did you not buy this from us?"...RED FLAG #1. I said no I bought it from the dealership down south. He paused and said give me a few minutes...and left. he came back about 20 mins later and said, "ok we will service it this time, but in the future you need to take it to where you bought it for service..."...I said..WUT?!. Anyway i ignored it as maybe just sales pressure or shaming. 2 Months later i get rim rash and I have the tire package so i call to schedule the rim to be repaired...and im told, "you didn't buy this from us, we are not going to service you, go to your dealer thanks bye."...I was furious. About 3 months later, the owner of the Genesis dealership in my city closed it, and went back to being just a Hyundai, and he actually mailed me (and all other local genesis owners) a letter saying "We no longer work on genesis for warranty or service. We will be happy to repair your genesis or change the oil ...for cash. Do not bring us warranty work we will not do it". I called my original dealership down south and they basically said "yep, this is happening all over the country, nothing we can do about it, just bring you car down here and we can work on it". Keep in mind this is 200 miles away, and I have to take a day off work to do it, as they are closed on weekends. I asked them "what happens if i get up in the morning and my fully warrantied Genesis won't crank".....to which they replied "have it towed and we can work on it...." i said "at who's expense?" and they replied immediately "yours of course we don't pay from transportation unless you are within 20 miles". I hung up immediately and 2 months later I traded it for a 2023 BMW 540i and never looked back. Buyer beware, Genesis is a great car, but their service and dealerships are as shaky and unreliable as a 1 legged stool. Buy one at your own risk and do lots of research in the dealerships near you, call them and make sure they will service you, and that they won't board up the windows overnight and flee to the hills. This is a dealership and manufacturer that still has way too much Hyundai in their blood to be taken seriously as a true luxury brand in the US.

      @thecianinator Před 2 měsíci +2

      Now that's some good information you won't get in most places. Usually the focus is on the car, but with luxury brands, I guess the dealer and service experience is just as important as the car itself.

    It is so staggering how far hyundai has come as a car company in the last 15-20 years so as to almost be entirely new. It's amazing really. I really do appreciate their aggressiveness. If you said that hyundai would have a luxury car brand spin off and try to take on mercedes and put out cars that look like bentleys you'd be laughed out of a room 20 years ago. They've been doing that for 20 years at least... They always had full sized sedans. Just didnt bother selling them outside of ASIA. Check Hyundai Equus, KIA K900, etc...
      And yeah, looking like a bentley is not that hard or impressive. If they managed to make it drive and feel like a Bentley, that would be impressive. Right now, the G90 doesnt even manage with the more "basic" germans on the driving aspects. It feels more like an extended G80 than a full fledged full size sedan. An S class is smooth but steady, composed, relatively agile but never harsh. The G90 is like the LS from Lexus. Knows how to be comfy and quiet but thats about it. They're both boaty, sluggish and always technologically and technically outdated.

I respect today's Hyundai; but actually prefer their mid 2000s cars which were Toyota reliable if you treated them with the same respect as a Toyota owner does for his car. Sadly that's not been the case with their direct injected engines, and my other favourite brand; Mazda same reason no longer my favourite. Toyota are for affordable cars as they still do multiport injection.

    Just so you know, a fully optioned Genesis G90 costs $101k.
    A base model S500 (similar power output) costs $111k.
    A S500 with the same amount of tech as the Genesis will set you back a little over $150k.
    I've just configured both of them.
    Also, a standard 88k G90 will give you Nappa leather, 20 Inch alloys and a 3D entertainment system as standard, whereas you'd have to drop another 10k into an already expensive 111k Benz.
    So, if an S class get's a 6 out of 10 for it's value, how can a Genesis, which offers the same amount of everything for 50k less, be a 5 out of 10.
    A base model 740i is 93k, so that is pretty comparable, but a base model 740i is the definition of poverty-spec. You literally get partially painted bumpers and an interior that's not made out of leather. A 10K Dacia Sandero offers those options. If you want anything, you'll have to pay. A paintjob that doesn't look like shit will set you back a whopping 5k, and the leather&wood interior will cost you a whopping $7300. Also, the fact that you don't get driving or parking assistance ($2100 and $1250 respectively, cooled and massaging seats (or even a heated option, it's $500 for the heated seats, $500 for the cooled FRONT seats and $1000 for massaging FRONT seats. If you want this for your back seats too, you're gonna have to give another 3k), a good sound system (Gonna have to pay 5k for that, sorry). All in all, a 740i that's comparable to the base G90 will set you back from 100k to 110k, and a 7 series that is comparable with the fully optioned 101k G90 will cost you between 120k and 130k, depending on the drivetrain (either way it will not be more powerful than the G90 3.5T E Supercharged, it's either gonna be weaker or as powerful)
    I'm calling BS on this score Doug, this car offers the same lever of quality, comfort and design compared to it's German rivals for a third of the price.

Also, the newest 7 series has a huge optional screen for the back row that looks amazing, but that alone will set you 5k. I'm not saying that the S class and the 7 series are bad cars, I'm just saying that they're severely overpriced, yet Doug somehow makes them look like a better value than a G90 that offers all of their features for a third of a price less. Also, the top end BMW seats look really cheap compared to the S Class' and the G90's seats.

      @@drhassan6892 The fact that Doug gave the G90 the same, extremely high score for quality, features and comfort, and yet he gave the G90 a lower value score, despite it being significantly cheaper than the two simply makes me believe that he is biased. And by biased, I mean payed to promote the Germans. A couple of years ago, when Doug was a much smaller CZcamsr, he really did criticize the Germans and it was obvious that he wasn't all that fond of them, but now it seems that he'd turn into a complete billboard for them. I mean he gave a Citroen CX and a C6 a 7/10 for comfort, only a single point above an W211 E55. I've been driven in all three (W211 220 and 270CDi, not the E55 AMG, but the AMG is a firmer car compared to the regular W211), and, even though the W211 is an extremely comfortable car, it is leagues behind a C6 Citroen. The W211 wouldn't even be comparable to a C5 X7, let alone a C6.

South Korea does have some strange taste in ultra luxury vehicles, once having been the second largest market in the world for VW Phaeton right after Germany, probably third place in the world for S-Class and Ford Taurus was a huge hit although American cars of the era were not favored by Koreans in general. So speaking of large sedans, Koreans still do love them cheap or not. Just to add some more hint, the best selling domestic car is the Azera for many recent years, while best sellers for import cars are ALWAYS either the E-Class or 5 Series.

    Hyundai have come a long way to create vehicles like this. I like it actually. Quality and materials all look nice. A pretty compelling car overall. It does suffer a bit on brand recognition though as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi come to mind when one talks about full-size luxury sedans.

    This is what they used to call an executive sedan. Not quite a limousine. But close. This is what I'd expect a Wall Street big shot or a senior government official (think ambassador or cabinet level) to roll in with a chauffeur and bodyguard in the front and the master of the universe comfortably ensconced in the rear. My only real complaint is that the extended length version is only available in Korea. Well, that, and the fact that I'd have to win the Powerball to be able to buy one.
    P.S. I actually find the lack of name brand recognition a feature. It marks you out as someone who is not just going to follow the pack.

    I have an older model 2019 G90 - it is the best car I have ever owned. When I got the car, friends and family would tell me: Why did you buy something made by Hyundai?
    Once they took a ride in the car, they understood that the Genesis was every bit as good as more conventional luxury brands, and it was significantly cheaper to purchase and service. I think the new 2023 Genesis is the best looking full sized sedan - it stands apart from pretty much everything else on the road, and those wheels are beautiful. However.... if it is priced at $100KUSD, it loses much of its appeal.

    Two comments from this review (great job btw Doug). 1) If you option out a BMW or Mercedes like the top end Genesis (shown here), then the G90 still is the bargain luxury sedan. 2) The "wow factor" you mention from owning a Merc or BMW, would be there IMO driving up in a Genesis G90, because then you get to talk about this rare and awesome car! That would be why I would get this car! I love what Genesis is doing. Thanks.

    Great review as always, Doug!!
    One thing I absolutely despise about Hyundai/Kia/Genesis in particular, is their chassy dynamics over uneven surfaces. I could see your camera shake and hear thuds seeping inside the cabin. Went back to see your 2021 Mercedes S Class review and that thing does not shudder like this car. It just wafts...
    Hands down Hyundai has come a long way in terms of technology, design, and engine reliability. But they are still far from 'perfecting' the chassy behavior, suspension, and road manners.
    I can vouch this car is more reliable than a Mercedes, but the 'Supercharged, Turbocharged, Mild Hybrid Engine' is bit of an overkill, when they could have just stuck with a V6 and a slightly larger Hybrid system, or even a V8 if emissions weren't an issue.
    Finally, Genesis used to be a brand that delivered nearly the same amount of luxury at a very competitive price. They got rid of that factor too!!!

      @iSOBigD Před rokem +1

      Not true about the last point (competitors will cost 20-50k more if you option them out, unless you want a crappy engine, no high end materials, no heated/vented/massaging seats, etc.), and I haven't driven this one, but having owned a Genesis sedan and a V8 G90 I haven't seen them behave poorly on crappy roads. They've been better than most cars and SUVs and I've been in or tested, and that's without air suspensions. I look forward to testing this new model out and comparing the feel over the same road surfaces.

    Great review, Doug. I was halfway expecting that you slot this as the “new Lexus” luxury done better than rivals (1989 LS400). I think Genesis has come a long way but some of the design language and materials just make it awkward and make it overpriced at over 100k. I think even 75k would be a bit of a hard sale given the brand recognition and quality of Hyundai/Kia’s (catching on fire/premature engine failure).

  • @justin1130

I would want to know how well everything such as all the electric features in the interior have lasted after 20/30k miles. Not sure if it's anything where like a Lexus for example where nothing seems to fail, ever. I'm guessing the warranty package is very competitive to compete with better known, more established brands.

    It has a "Driver's awakening" fragrance, super comfortable reclining seats and soft pillows. I'm surprised it doesn't come with blankets. It feels like Hyunday is trying to tell you that they really trust their autonomous driving system.
