      @@theemeralddj1 I agree, and disagree. In 2017 they where on sale marked down to about $10,000. But the general public wanted large SUV's, speedy, very safe, and don't care about fuel. And the people who want a A, to B car don't see much about Mitsubishi, so they get a Corolla instead.
      But in 2024, the price is $18,000. A lot more, but the price of all cars has gone way up, and with the gas prices how they are, they are selling quite a bit more Mirages.

    • @jeffmaas9308
      @jeffmaas9308 Před 25 dny +21

      The Mirage makes sense in its target countries. In South East Asia it competes with many cars that are very simple such as the Toyota Wigo / Daihatsu Ayla or the Suzuki Celerio or the Kia Picanto. In many developing countries used cars simply don't depreciate at anywhere near what we see in North America or even Europe and in these markets a new Mirage is closer in price to a 6 year old Corolla that may or may not have been through multiple flood and natural disasters.
      I have a feeling that Nissan / Renault are producing as many Mirages as the Mitsubishi plant that produces them can produce and what ends up in the USA is simply their to keep models in the showrooms until they can figure out what to do with the brand and its dealerships.

    Work at a Buick dealer (not a salesman, just a job) I disagree with the opinion on the Encore GX mostly due to the fact that the GX has the option of AWD, taller trunk for cargo room, and as a taller person (6'3") I find it more comfortable to sit in. Not to mention for a lot of older people (lets be honest, they are a lot of the customer base who likes Buick) they find it very easy to get into. The Envista is designed to be a sportier/nicer looking base model, while the Encore GX is meant to be a bit roomier and more capable, with the addition of more options for things like sound system, AWD, packages, etc.

    Doug is absolutely right about the Mirage. For about $17,000-$19,000 at current market rates, basically the same price as a Mirage, you can get a dealership-maintained 2020 Honda Fit LX with under 20,000 miles, and it will ride considerably better, be far more refined, will still get great fuel economy, have better handling with accurate steering, feature a more versatile and larger interior with the magic seats and will do 0-60 in sport mode in a bit over 8 seconds. Basically enough to quickly get up to freeway speeds, which is what you want in a commuter car.
    I unfortuantely had to rent a Mirage last year when I was overseas, as it was the only vehicle left on the lot, and it felt quite sketchy and borderline unacceptable with its acceleration. Especially going up hills, it struggled. I couldn't imagine trying to merge onto a freeway with short entrance ramps, like I-10 through the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County. A 1990 Honda Accord or mid-90's Toyota Camry offers you a far more compliant suspension and ride comfort over this piece of junk.

    • @extralock1045
      @extralock1045 Před 25 dny +5

      I actually live in the Los Angeles area, and also travel up to places like Big Bear often. I drive about 77 miles a day, mostly freeway. I've never had an issue with merging, always gets me up to 50-55 at the end of the onramp. I use about 40% throttle, or about 2,500 RPM. Just got back from a 259 mile drive, feel good. Went up to Big Bear on the CA-38, elevation 8,500 feet. I had max capacity in the car nearly, about 750 pounds. It was slow at the top, still made it good. Slow and steady.
      It can keep up with traffic if you dig into the throttle, but I try to save gas, and keep it about 1,800 to 2,200 RPM. So went about 30 MPH up the hill. But you can go 50-55 if you want.
      Also the Mirage steering is very accurate, at least mine is. Maybe your rental had bad experiences in the past? Not sure. And the rear seats also fold down, 60/40 split.

      Toyoda and his loyalists almost certainly sabotaged the project from day 1. And, by making such a bad car, they managed to back the new management into such a corner that they had no choice but to fall back to making more hybrids for half a decade or more because they had to start over from zero on their EV architecture. It's the same thing with the PHEVs, Toyoda purposely limited production of the best vehicles Toyota makes rather than sourcing more batteries and retooling factories because he was all in on standard hybrids and hydrogen. There is a reason he's gone now, and it's not hard to see why. He set the company back a decade and reduced their value in the market substantially as a result.

      And, it seems they may be right, at least for now. EVs are still very expensive to build, the batteries, for now, still need materials that are nightmare to get and PR disaster and are not viable to replace, the range/charge time is still unsatisfactory and the infrastructure isn't quite there even for today's number of vehicles, let alone if all cars will be EV.
      On top of that the R&D of EVs took so much resources that the traditional manufacturers who previously had upper hand over Tesla in everything else except propulsion and a giant tablet, are now falling behind even the Chinese, and are struggling to make profits on any market that does not offer heavy government incentives.
      Meanwhile Toyota end Mazda continue to sell IC/hybrids easily and are waiting for others to do the hard work - when time comes, they're big enough to just buy a supplier that has the tech. In the meantime they can research other tech that nobody else have money for anymore, which might get them upper hand, in case of success.

And of course make it so ugly that even its mother would take it out back and shoot it out of sympathy. I would say the market is the exact opposite of "no bad cars" but rather a lot of bad cars. Nearly every brand is plagued with engine issues, transmission issues, cheap parts, plastic in place of metal alloys, corrosion issues and failures of the excess amounts of technology in every vehicle. Engines failing with under 1000 miles, transmission shudders and failures at low miles. There really isn't much for A-B cars anymore. The old-school Corolla's, Maxima's, Civics, Sunfire's, Cavaliers, Neon's, Focus' and so many more that were base-level technology, extremely reliable, cheap to drive and maintain and generally just great for those on a budget. Nearly every small car now is boosted, turbo failures are through the roof, top-end carbon build-up in Direct Injected engines. Let's also not forget that the high-pressure fuel pumps and injectors are more inline with a diesel for maintenance cost. Timing issues are rampant across many makes and models. Excessive oil consumption, PCV issues, broken spark plugs, head-gasket issues, water-pump failures it's insane. The number of vehicles I see mechanically totaled under 150k miles is unreal. The one's under 100k miles are even scarier. Longevity is something that many, especially used car buyers, care about immensely. I expect any well maintained vehicle to hit 200k miles without any catastrophic failures. Obviously there are lemons, and how you treat your vehicle makes a world of difference, but I think we are in an epidemic of vehicles that are being made with the cheapest sub-par parts, but being sold at astronomical costs that often don't even make it through the warranty period. There are few (I won't say none) new models that would reliably hit that target on the large majority of their vehicles driving down the road.

      We’ve been in a modern malaise era of cars for the past 10 years at least. Everything is about profits for the manufacturers and building the biggest ugliest cars for the lowest cost, and selling them for the highest price possible. All thanks to American consumer ignorance, lack of proper regulation for vehicles deemed as “light truck”, and good ol corporate greed. It’s a shame that modern consumers “only want” fat, top heavy, minivans with sloppy handling, high belt lines, poor visibility, iPad dashboards, 20 cameras and phone chargers, poor fuel economy, complex and expensive hybrid and AWD systems, useless ground clearance, ugly plastic fenders and an average price tag of $50.000, but thats the unfortunate world we live in today. What baffles me even more is that normie consumers just can’t seem to understand that we all deserve better as consumers. Not everyone wants or needs a crossover, and yet some manufacturers are even beginning to take that choice away from us.

      @FreddyOJohnny This is almost exactly why I have grown to hate crossovers, SUVs and most pickups. It's sad how much the normie consumer will fold to the popular thing for status instead of looking at actually nice cars because "theyre small". I had a 2015 Ford Fusion SE base model and Ive never had an issue with it for anything. It can offroad well, it can go a decent speed, it has great gas mileage, it has tons of space, it was lots of comfortable luxury for a family sedan that seats 5 with almost as much storage as a pickup if the backseats are down. The internals are nearly flawless, the Duratec 1.5l and 2.5l are so reliable and strong that the entire chassis will fall into pieces before the engine needs a replacement. This is one example of cars that we DESERVE to have. I blame idiots for becoming crossover/suv/pickup losers amidst the crumbling economy that is only accelerated by their poor choices

    I think Doug is a little mistaken when it comes to the Buick lineup, which I don't blame him, GM has done a terrible job with Buick in North America.
    So there is the Buick Encore and then there is the Buick Encore GX.
    The Buick Encore was based on the same platform as the Chevy Trax, and the redesigned Chevy Trax has now turned into the Buick Envista. The standard Buick Encore and the terrible last generation Chevy Trax are no longer sold.
    The Buick Encore GX is on the same platform as the Chevy Trailblazer, which arguably isn't that bad of a car. Both of these car are still sold. So they basically have the same exact lineup as Chevy when it comes their small SUVs.

      If the envisaged is the new trax platform that would also mean it’s not available in AWD since the new trax is FWD only correct?

      @@BStreet666 So these are using a revised version of the engine in the Encore GX, which has had some reliability issues early on, but they seem to have fixed them. It's hard to say this early on if they'll be reliable though. I'd say that as long as you are on top of maintenance, it should be reliable to at least 80k miles. The reception of the Envista has been really good so far, they drive pretty well and has a pretty decent interior for the money. The only thing about the more recent GM vehicles is that their interior fabrics and materials seem to wear out pretty quickly, like the steering wheel leathers looks shiny after 30k miles and the foam in the seats fail after 60k or so miles depending on the vehicles. Granted most of those things can be avoided if you just take care of the car.
      TLDR: If you do the recommend maintenance and take care of it, it's reliable. Would I buy one? I personally think the Encore GX looks better, and it also just got a refresh, so I'd probably buy that over the Envista, but that wouldn't stop me from recommending that someone buys it.

    I work for a Subaru dealership in WA state.
    The Solterra is a Subaru in name only, our salespeople hate dealing with them, especially at the price point it's set at, and Toyota looks like it purposely half assed it's engineering with Subaru, just to justify the 20+ years it spent on it's hybrid technology, Not only is Toyota kicking and screaming about EV's it's dragging Subaru down with, and believe me, Subaru has been a shell of itself for a few years now.

      They’ve been slowly becoming just another brand, when they had so much personality as a brand, early 2000’s was peak Subaru, with good value/sporty offerings that truly defied refinement and quality for the price. Recently bought an SK forester, love it for what it is, but it’s definitely something more generic, decided on it specially when I saw the next gen Forester, they even copied ford design. They truly lost their way.
      I see the point with appealing to the masses instead of enthusiasts, but they really let us down slowly until fading, only the WRX and BR-Z are the reminiscent of what they once represented.

    The only place I saw and have seen the Toyota/Subaru electrics is in Dublin when they’re being used as taxis, though seriously subsidized. Tells you something.
    Tesla has been around for about 12 years now if you think of the original model S. That is, in terms of a normal passenger car.. It seems like Toyota learned nothing from them, and refused to accept any of the standards that have been established. I mean, no regen? Literally everything else has that. My stupid little leased Bolt seems like a supercar next to these.
