Happy pre-Thanksgiving everyone! Hope you all have a safe and relaxing holiday with friends/family! We'll be enjoying some much needed time off after a crazy 3 straight weeks of travel but hopefully you guys enjoy this very detailed comparison between two of the latest flagship luxury sedans. We're hoping to get our hands on the new BMW 7-Series for a full week very soon. Until then, get used to this new world where comparing a $100,000+ Mercedes to a Genesis is normal. It was a very close race for us and you cannot go wrong with either vehicle!

Genesis is just coming up and they are a serious competition, with time and consistency they will overtake the Mercedes Benz. This was how LG electronics came to take over major brands.

Very far in 7 years. It took Lexus a little bit longer to reach competitive parity with the S-Class. Not until the 2000s with the LS430 did Lexus really have a true S-Class competitor in my opinion. Genesis has been progressing much quicker than Lexus compared to when that brand was the same age in the 90s.

The Genesis G90 is what the Jaguar XJL & Lincoln Continental SHOULD have become, and that's coming from someone who loved both of those models as well. The G90 is simply incredible! I wish we got the LWB version here too!

@Marty if you don't live in the Americas (including countries Canada, Mexico, Columbia etc), you won't keep any vehicle for more than 6 years with 100,000+ on mileage. Only people in the Americas drive more than 20,000 km in a year. A Hyundai, Mercedes, or Volkswagen can last longer periods of ownership than Toyotas outside the Americas because people don't put that much mileage in their cars

The value proposition of Genesis is much more abundant versus the German brands that want to charge you for everything that should be standard in the vehicles. Yes, the S-Class is nice and the ambient lighting is class-leading, I don't think the G90 is far off either when it comes to luxury.

I went from a S Class into a Genesis GV80 Prestige. I dont regret it. With the warranty and all the options, genesis is on to something. S Class maintenance costs are ridiculous. They wanted $3k for a alternator.

One can sense the vision and mission of Genesis. This brand is absolutely targeting the new generation.

Mercedes nowadays offers too many models and they are cutting costs like never before... full of cheap plastic, Led strips in the interior, screens everywhere (which are cheaper to produce than aluminum physical buttons...). Nowadays they are still alive because of their past reputation.

@@fahmidnd2 Doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Buyers are what count no spectators. I can tell them apart easily. The issue is with the smaller models, not the S.
@@MercOne Everything else is comparable to the S Class anyway. A bit slower but who cars. Both are faster than the twin turbo RX7 I owned. So I do not think the 0.5 second matters at all. The Genesis looks sweet!
@@gregkramer5588 When a competitor is faster and offers better fuel economy at the same time it speaks to superior engineering. That is in part what you buy these cars for. Sure all the cars in this class are comparable but the goal is to see which is best. Comparable is just the start.
I never would have considered purchasing a Genesis before watching this video. Thanks for doing comparison. I wonder how the Genesis would stack up against other manufacturers flagship sedans?
At this price, only the LS could potentially compete, but it's nowhere near as nice inside or out. The 7 series/A8/S Class at the same price as a fully loaded G90 would have basically zero options so it wouldn't even be close. I tried optioning out an S class to the level of a base G90 and it was over 50% more expensive, it was a $50k-$60k difference at which point unless you love cheap flat touch screens instead of carefully designed and manufactured high quality buttons and switches, and if you prefer RGB LEDs like the ones in 90s limos and in your computer tower, I don't see the benefits.
It would stack up higher because the S-class is the defacto best in this segment.

Fully agree with this review. I bought the G90, and would have leased the S Class instead had the dealers and leasing agencies in my country offered terms equivalent to what you would find in the US. Overall for me it worked out to make much more sense to buy the G90, which I absolutely love, and do not feel left out of the S Class at all. It is in fact better in some ways, the G90, offers better seat comfort than the non-upgraded S-class seats, it has a much simpler and more convenient tech layout (My job is entirely tech oriented so I am not tech shy), and gives you all the key features I would view as essential in this category as standard so you're not having to custom order anything or dealing with bad decisions by the buyers at dealerships, auto close doors are actually really nice when you get into them, and offers a much better warranty. Also, to some degree having the Genesis name badge is more low key and modern, and potentially prevents me from looking like I'm living some egregiously more luxurious lifestyle than my boss and staff.

My following comments are to assist anyone who is strongly considering purchasing a Genesis G90. I am not affiliated with Genesis other than being a repeat owner of both these models.
My wife has just received took her 2024 G90 E Supercharged. Its her new daily driver. It just happened to be delivered to my residence on my birthday. I had some fun with that.
I'm not looking to debate whose brand is the best. This G90 is closing in on Mercedes and BMW. I currently own both those brands, too. My daily driver is a 2020 BMW Alpina, which I thoroughly enjoy!
She previously had a 2021 G90 5.0, which she absolutely enjoyed. It was unfortunately totaled on interstate 95 NB, doing 60. My wife and youngest son walked away without a scratch, bruise, bump, cut, or any pain. I am beyond grateful, and the car really held up from a safety aspect. That alone speaks volumes for this model!
So, for instance, the tech in the 2020 Alpina is just so complicated. The 2024 G90 tech blows it out of the water. It cost me a 1/4 of a million dollars to make that hands-on assessment!😮
So, Genesis has in recent years recruited some top design talent from within the luxury car industry, with a purpose! 😮
Over the years, I have had several S Class models (one being a 2018 Maybach), BMW 7 Series, Aston Martins, and two Bentley's, which I should have stopped at one. Believe me, all these luxury brands have their downfalls. I have spent a boat load of monies learning this reality.
I am a car collector for over 40 years now. I've been car enthusiast since I was a youngster. Cars have been a passion. My first nice car purchase was a 1962 C1 corvette in the late 70s, paid $4,500.00 for it, and still I still own it today. I used it to catch the eye of my beautiful bride of almost 40 years now. Little did she know what was in store for us down the road!
My prize collection is my wife, our 7 children (no twins) and 5 grandchildren. They are my greatest accomplishments in life!
You highlighted both vehicles extremely accurately. I really appreciate the new G90's interior design and quality. It has a modern flair to it, and with the white interior it attempts to compete with the white interior in my 2017 Bentley Flying Spur.
So, if you are on the fence regarding a G90 purchase, you will not be disappointed. It's a great value for the money.
I would recommend upgrading to the E Supercharged model if it's in your budget.
The following is for the super car enthusiasts out there. Hope it can be taken as an encouragement. Just an FYI, I was homeless at 17 in 1974, no inheritance funding came my way.
Let's just say that as life has gone on, I have been very fortunate to become well funded. I am driven, but much credit has to go to my wife and the many great dedicated people surrounding us! They have shared in the wealth as they earned it!
Its allowed me to keep filling up the warehouse I call my garage. 53 stalls with cars in them and still room for a few more.
I have respect money without loving it. I love what it has allowed me to do for my family, friends, and helping many people in need!

If I was buying the car, the G90 hands down. It will last longer than the S Class.
And you know this how?? Genesis is still a younger brand.
I was set to go for the MB S580, but am now leaning towards the Genesis. There were a few things better about the MB - performance slightly better (but then will I really care), but there were just as many on the Genesis - displays look much better on it. The thing that really gets me is both the price and the packages. I am a big lover of the options - audio system, etc. The Genesis has it all if you pick the top package for about $100k. This includes the 23-upgraded speaker B&O system, heads up display, back-seat package, etc. Truthfully, on the MB, building out a model and pricing is almost impossible because they have such a bewildering array of options. When I put together the package I wanted including upgraded 4D Burmeister stereo, Napa Leather, etc, I came out around $150k and still not sure if I got anything. So now we are talking $50k difference. Plus, I know Genesis will be less expensive own compared to the Mercedes.
One thing he didn't discuss is the comparison of the two top-end stereo systems. The upgraded Burmeister on the MB, the 23-speaker B&O on the Genesis. Wondered if anyone had any input there.
That 50k difference will get you a slightly used Stinger for when you want a fun run around car!

I think that both are great choices, but at the end of the day, it’s going to be based on preference. Do you love a high tech premium sedan that costs less, go with the Genesis and if you want a more Euro feel, go with the Mercedes.

That G90 is stunning but if I had the money I'd take the MB. They know luxury and have been doing it for decades. Plus, it's a Mercedes!
What does that mean, "Plus, it's a Mercedes"?? Saying that is the equivalent of "Cadillac, the standard of the world". Maybe once that meant something, but nowadays.. not so much. Times have changed, and advancements COMPLETELY allow for brands such as Genesis to be just as good or even better. Resting on name plate is just, mehh. Both are fantastic, obviously and do luxury exceptionally well.
The popular automotive magazines complain about the MB infotainment system known as MBUX, which was not reviewed in this video. If so, he may have formed a different conclusion.

While neither of these vehicles are in my price range I still admire their beauty and luxury. Genesis has come a long way in producing stylish, luxury vehicles. I still don’t understand why they refuse to put wireless car play in a vehicle at this price point. Never would I think you would be comparing a Mercedes to a vehicle made by Hyundai, it’s a mixed up world. LOL.

The wife and I own a Gv80 prestige love it for 65k in this day and age we couldn't complain for all the creature comforts it provides.
As usual, a great review. Genesis belongs with the "premium badges". I came from BMW and Jaguar and absolutory love my GV70 3.5 Sport Prestige, the concierge service is wonderful, never left my home (they dropped off a GV80). The G90 in person is very impressive, if you buy I would go with it, if you lease get the Mercedes.
Of course the S-class is like the king of luxury sedans, always been the benchmark, but I'm glad to see Genesis step it up from when they started back in 2017. They had a good start, but over the years, their cars have been getting close to that of the S-class, which is saying a lot :) Hyundai is obviously very confident in Genesis, and I hope Hyundai invests a lot of money into the brand in the future years to come. I mean competitors like the S-class, the BMW 7 Series, the Audi A8 are among some of the best, but Genesis is definitely getting close to that. Acura and Lexus don't even come close, I mean the RLX was nice in 2014, but was nothing like the original flagship Legend (the RLX is not even being sold anymore), and the Lexus LS is nowhere near the luxury that Genesis is offering, even though it looks nice on the outside for me at least.

For smaller models on this class. Bmw 3 is the only model that drives better than a G70. Mercedes C class and Audi A4 are all behind. Lexus Is350 is just casted out in the competition. A Lexus may have better longevity, but who buy cars from this class for longevity?

According to every other review I could find the S580 is limited at 155 mph, which is where pretty much every German car is limited at.
Would be surprised that a 500hp S-Class would be slower than my mom's Honda Civic.

I've had a 2018 g90 for 2 years. Not as nice as the car shown. That said Ive put 100000 trouble free miles on it. Yes, that's right, 100k in 2 years. A great car to be stuck with for sure. Perhaps as important as the mechanical, the fit and finish is amazing. Not one rattle, squeak or any issue with the materials to include heavy use of the drivers seat. A very well built and substantial car in all regards. Hopefully current models will keep the one thing in the luxury segment that buyers almost never seem to get: reliable low cost ownership.
Both are amazing cars... and I absolutely loved the backseat of the G90 at the LA Auto Show. Between these, I'd pick the Mercedes, but honestly I'd rather buy a Genesis G80 (NOT G90, but a step down) and save a ton of money; the G80 is the real Genesis, and I do prefer it to the E-Class.
Agreed. I upgraded from the 2021 g70 to the new 2023 g80 and I'm loving it
I have the 2016 G80 and I just asked my son if I should trade it for the G90. I don't know. I love my G80, but I do love everything about this G90.
@@maganblair2005 My father in law had the Long Wheel version here in Korea. I can say it is very comfortable. Interior and exterior is very beautiful.
G90 is so incredible, personally having driven both and had a lot of spending money the S class I’d have to go with

These comments show the issue with the Genesis. A lot of people are still referring to it as “the Hyundai”.
Those are brand snobs. Genesis is still new (not even 10 years old) so people want to be petty towards the newcomer.
I've been saying this for years at the end of the day its still a Hyundai.. when Merc will still be a Mercedes....Period...
I mean, Genesis is always going to be known as Hyundais (only to those who knows about the history), even in 10+ years. Because Hyundai is the parent company, Genesis is using Hyundai resources to produce Genesis vehicles, and Genesis seeks Hyundai Execs approval for big decisions. So until Genesis and Kia Execs decide to be on their own like what Ferarri did. Genesis will forever have the soul of Hyundai. Forever. This applies to any sub vehicle company with a parent. No one should be ashamed about owning/driving a Genesis that people can usually call a Hyundai. In reality, it's true. Genesis isn't a new up-and-coming startup from unknown randoms that blew up going mainstream.
I do think the chrome looks better in that dark emerald color green over the black package but in a dark grey and on a designo white the black looks good and on the back too

The G90 is that underrated family owned coffee shop that makes MUCH better coffee than starbucks (the s class)
Well it depends on the type of coffee that you drink lol because lol your G90 doesn’t come in maybach flavor loll or AMG flavor just just standard black with cream hmm lol but if that’s what you like then go for it

The RC F is nothing great since it’s overpriced and slow. V8 Sounds great though.
The LC500 is fantastic but no one’s buying it and they will eventually kill it off.
Also who cares about Lexus selling more? That doesn’t mean they are better

Hello, a great review but It would be nice if you did a 1 minute night drive so we can see the ambient lighting and the visibility.
Nice shout out to the Equus! I have one and love it. Hoping one day there will be a Genesis Equus trim or package available. Maybe the Genesis version of the Hyundai "Calligraphy" trim.
First time I sat in an Equus I thought these are the most comfortable seats I have ever tried.
They never stick to a car equos had a 4 year run now this g90 kia k90 such a gimmicky car it will not be around for long hence the resale value

I think the biggest short-coming of Genesis in this segment is the lack of a proper V8.
V8 is going to be phase out in the future.

Most cars in this segment offer a V6 as standard. I wouldn't be surprised if that's also the healthy majority of sales.

I currently own 2016 s class hybrid that I love. Have to give credit to genesis for the features. The exterior design is still a bit to twitchy for me.
Would take a Mercedes EQS 580 over these two hands down !
If the s class didn’t exist, I still wouldn’t get a g90. Bmw and Audi still are options.
The S Class has a presence that few cars short of a Bentley or Rolls have. As nice as the Genesis is, it just doesn’t have the presence of the S Class.
What about BMW?
S class has horrible reliability and resale and value. That's a huge downfall for MB.

They have the means to get a new one every few years and if anything happens during the time they own them it will be taken care of under warranty. I am not the biggest MB fan but there are a few models if money was no object that I would own and the S class is one.
It looks like a Bentley because it’s the same designer. But it’s that designers work, not Bentley’s. So why shouldn’t it look similar? Giugiaro’s designs all looked similar across the many brands he worked for and no one blinks an eye..
It really doesn’t matter how good Genesis is, you’ll still see 1 G90 for every 30 plus Mercedes Benz S Classes you’ll see on the road.
That’s the good thing about it
