      If you read the book (it is free on Everand, which is an amazing book subscription service--and free for the first month, if I remember correctly), there's even more textual richness in his name and others. Plus more framing devices, and a completely different ending. Definitely worth the read . .. .

    I loved this movie. Movies like this really bloom after the movie is over and you’re talking about it with others. A lot of the movies strong choices aren’t mentioned and it’s only when you describe it to others that ideas pop out to you. The movie felt like a fairytale version of how the average woman grows up in a male centric world. All the men see her as sexual and either want to protect her from the world or exploit her. she rarely has her own freedom, its often interrupted by men wanting to own her

    I have had so much fun looking all around the Internet at comments about “Poor Things”. Men who say that it’s too feminist and that it’s a man hating film. And then, in contrast, women who are saying it’s exploitative and perverted.
    It’s been so much fun.
    Prudes being offended by art is just so twee. 😊

And you guys are right, Stone's physicality is awesome. And the dialogue and it's delivery cadence is so fun. This whole movie is bonkers. And what a tremendous tale portraying the coming of age of a woman while at the same time leaving Ruffalo character in hilarious ruin. I feel like I'm saying, "this is my favorite movie of the year" like every other week now. imho 2023 has been an excellent year for film. Especially with social commentary. Oppenheimer. Barbie. Birth/Rebirth. Killers of the Flower Moon. Dream Scenario. American Fiction. Poor Things. Guys, it's been a great year. Awards season is gonna be bonkers. Also, this was an interesting palate cleanser from seeing Aquaman right before it. Ha

      I'd argue that she ends the film as a well-read, sexually-experienced teen. In the scene you referenced, she responds as a child would to the revelation of human suffering and has a child-like solution for it. She does "age" rapidly throughout the film, but she is most definitely a child when she first has sex with the Ruffalo character. Deriving pleasure from sexual contact doesn't make someone an adult, after all. I mean...what adult gets into a trunk just because they're bluntly told to?

    I love all your reviews, they’re the only ones I watch now that I’ve discovered you two! One thing about this film I do disagree on is Jerrod Carmichael. I’ve seen all his stand up and I’m definitely a fan of his and the main thing in all of them is his cynicism and negativity which I think was ideal for his part. And as Joseph commented he wanted his part to be a gay male character which, how do we know he wasn’t? They never showcase his sexuality and he’s much like Jerrod in real life, a gay man not announcing or parading himself, knowing the world isn’t safe for everyone. I thought it was a delight seeing him. As for everything else I agree completely with this review! This movie was a pleasure to watch!!! Everyone played their mf part! Keep doing your thing! These reviews bring me so much comfort and happiness somehow! ❤️‍🔥

Particularly as a man of colour this seems to me even more poignant. Everyone else speaks to Bella like a child or plaything or something to analyze. He was a blunt guy but honest and he showed her the depths of despair. I loved that part. I think it was key to what Bella achieved in the end. Anyhow you guys are great..love the reviews.

    I've already heard takes from pearl-clutching prudes complaining both about the amount of sex in the film, and that it's "romanticising paedophilia". Like, seriously 😂

      I've not seen this so genuine question - how many years on after the brain is put in her mums body does she start getting sexual? Might be a bit weird if it is less than 16 years!

    • @user-dx1jb4zq9e
      @user-dx1jb4zq9e Před 5 měsíci +5

      If the appeal of this movie is that it's supposed to be offensive to "pearl clutching prudes" because of its "stunning and brave sex positivity," it's probably going to suck. Would this film have any appeal if people you hate weren't criticizing it for whatever reason? Because this director's previous films are basically the avant garde for midwits.

    • @hanbobanable
      @hanbobanable Před 3 měsíci

      Is it insanity?? @TechnicJunglist I'm not a prude at all but I don't want to to see a baby in a woman's body having sex repeatedly with grown men - the way people love it so much and say its about sexual liberation does seem like its glorifying it, I can't get my head around so many people loving it! The story is horrible. I love disturbing when it's acknowledged it is wrong and disturbing, not seen as positive, it's just so horrible!

This one is so uniquely gorgeous and hilarious and philosophical and feminist and BOLD!! Thank you for your brilliant review; you both are so insightful and just delicious to listen to. 🖤💙💛❤🐐

    If terry Gilliam directed under the skin….. this reminds me of Swiss army man too in how unlike lobster and sacred deer where lanthimos clearly is somewhat judging his characters and almost is wallowing in their nihilism… jn poor things and making Swiss army man connection is that yes it’s silly it’s wierd what some would call “dumb” but it EMBRACES it so much and loves its characters and Emma stone and lanthimos ….. please be the next deniro scorsese I know it’s only two films now but they just finished a third one so let’s keep jt going

    What's your take on how Felicity (Bella 2.0) serves the movie? McNamara had to condense and erase so much, yet he ADDED this character to Dr. Godwin's household. ???

    • @matthewtewey84
      @matthewtewey84 Před 5 měsíci

      I think Felicity was a narrative device to show the audience that Candles and Godwin thought Bella was gone for good. It shows the loss that they were feeling.

    Mark acted a pure fool and I loved every minute of it. His spiraling while chiding her to not fall in love with him, hilarious (😂) Il loved how as she gained more world intelligence or choice, Ruffalo wants to control her more. There was a brief moment once knowing she has an infant brain in a woman's body it was not lost on me at how extremely pleased Mark is with her to be "dumb & beautiful just for sex" and how it makes him feel like he's TEACHING HER everything. Made me go "they [the writers] were being very honest here, was it intentional? Would Dafoe's character be both the doctor and the monster...in some measure, with him being unaware? If the doctor never abandoned the monster, wouldn't it had always loved him, the same as Dafoe's character loves his father?

    The Harry Astley character comes from Dostoyevsky's The Gambler, and in Gray's novel is meant to be disorientating. The Dostoyevsky character is very sympathetic, almost in an Anglophile way, while in Gray's novel it's like a commentary on the moral emptiness of English charm, and the vileness and sadism which underpins the 'upper classes': Perfidious Albion.

And.to see her talk so seriously about this role and sets. Et. Gurrl w seenyo everything. The extras that simulated certain acts , i was like crings. If Courtney love played that part. I think I could realte. 😂 Just a queer saying I didn't need to see Emmas Va Ja Yj Ay that much. Im like hi mom we're on the red carpet premiere of my new picture 😮 lol😅 LOOK WHAT I CAN DO

    I liked this film a lot, but I didn't love it. I thought it was absolutely gorgeous, but I didn't think all of the actors or the editing lived up to the script's comedy. The rhythm of the humor was sometimes very off for me . There were performers and entire exchanges that didn't mine the laugh lines for all they were worth. Also, Mark Ruffalo was doing the most and I didn't think it always worked. As for the two comedians, Jerrod Carmichael was pretty bad and poorly lit in his closeup(they never light Black people properly in movies that aren't about Black people...). Ramy Yourseff was wonderful and he always knew how to deliver the joke. After Emma Stone, he might be my favorite performance.

    I liked the movie. I think they spend too much time at the whorehouse though and I got the point halfway through and some of the scenes just became excessive. Ending was perfect though. I enjoyed this very whacky movie and glad Emma won an Oscar for it.
