Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Blade Runner 2049 Helmet Parts!

- Adam's back to replica prop building with some Blade Runner goodness! Adam recently acquired a perfect replica of Sapper Morton's helmet as seen in the opening of Blade Runner 2049. And in pursuit of creating a full costume to go along with that piece, he needs to make an articulating mechanical air hose cage that connects to the helmet. And instead of 3D printing it, he's going to hand machine it from scratch!

Always good to see how others solve a problem, plus the stuff he builds is awesome. I don't really like sci fi type movies, which is the inspiration for a lot of the stuff he builds, but I watch just to see him recreating stuff from scratch. You will learn things from this guy, he has a pretty eclectic skillset and knowledge base.

Adam walking off camera followed by the crashing of falling parts and a distant "Im okay.." is comedy gold
all that was needed to complete it was a sound of a screetching cat as the parts fell down to really put it into the realm of cartoons.
That tubing is used for framing in hospital bed traction setup. I work with every day being a orthopaedic nurse for 30 years. We have literal tons of that tubing. Zoll is the company who sold the over head frames.

Thought that tubing looked familiar they were part of the traction system when i broke my leg as a child. Unfortunately it doesn't seem Zoll sells those over head frames anymore
Adam, I commissioned the first one from deetz! We collaborated on accurizing the design as much as we could. References were hard to come by! The beauty of this accessory gives me heart palpitations. Great work.
The way you explained the air tube armor and the way it looks I can see why you chose the pipe you did. The way it connects and moves it reminds me of the old wooden or plastic snake toy. Except for the fact that it doesn't degrade in size like the toy.
I thought of the same toy, first time one of those things had crossed my mind in years but I was fascinated by the mechanical connections in them for some reason when I was a kid.
I thought of the mech arms he has already made! I would have made the exterior cosmetic.
I saw this and the first thing I thought was "You can totally machine this!". My head is still not used to having a 3D printer.
The fact that you put the thread on the OUTSIDE lip instead of the inside is freaking brilliant. I watch you make things for these little gems!

It's like making a pin and hole system without the "how do I tolerance this so I can jam the pieces together but they won't pop out..." Problem.

I've been having a bad week and seeing Adam's face light up playing around with his finished connections gave me the biggest smile, that was seriously contagious.

My favorite part of this build has to be the sound. I absolutely love it, it reminds me of the sound of clanking armor. So satisfying.
I agree with the other Mike, the videography and editing on TESTED videos is sublime. This build was EPIC! The pride and excitement you have for the results is well earned and deserved. The way the links move and sound also gave me a Squiddy vibe from The Matrix! Lol. Looking forward to seeing more on this build.

Have to say as someone whose been watching you work since I was 10 and at 29 am now an accomplished CNC/Machinist I love being able to understand so much of what you are doing .
The amount of time that Adam just plays with the movement of the cable in this video brings me massive amounts of joy. It's so incredibly apparent that this part not only satisfies the build but feels real. Like the difference between picking up a plastic light saber and a hype realistic one. You just want to hold it all day.
I'll never forget the time Adam said.. "If there was one thing I could go back and tell my younger self it would be.. USE MORE COOLING FLUID".. And I have added that to my life. And it really helps. Thanks so much Mr. Savage. You are my favorite person on CZcams.
Thank you very much for just taking the time to film (and then chose to SHOW us!) the like 3-5 mins or so of you just fooling around with and playing with this thing. Flopping it about all crazy and whatnot. 99% satisfying my burning desire to feel and want to do the exact same.
Adam is a TERRIFIC story teller. Explains why he is so good at weathering too. He tells an object's story with the weathering he applies to it. Love it.
After listening to "Every Tool's A Hammer" and "What Happens Next?", I said that I'd love to fall asleep listening to him narrate - but I can't, because he's too damn interesting and engaging.

Makes me think of these toy snakes I played with as a child made of plastic that would simulate a snake writhing side to side with a slight movement of your wrist. Impressive build!
This has to be one of the best One Day Builds to date! Amazing craftsmanship, good vibes and some comedy as can be expected. But I also noticed a great soundtrack on timelapses and that ASMR segment topped it all off :D

Great video Adam. I have to say that when you were playing with the hose cage, it reminded me of the Borg Queen in First Contact where Picard ripped out her spine. Adam now has a fantastic design for an incredible set of Doctor Octopus arms !! Just make them from a larger diameter stock and a lot longer...

The milling machine. The Biggest DREAM piece of machinery I WILL OWN ONE DAY! I miss having one at the shops ive worked at. I miss having a full size lathe but the lil mini lathe my company owns now does wonders to get some simple turnings done with great ease and a fair amount of accuracy! I cant wait to get a full size set of my own! I can only imagine what all i can accomplish with them. LOVE THEM! So jealous Mr Savage! I wish i could get my own.

Such and incredibly satisfying build, the sounds of the links after the parts washer and after being connected are amazing. It weirdly reminds me of a snake as well.
My favorite part of this was Adam calculating the BigO complexity of each piece. Its amazing how that type of metric is a good way of assessing complexity for things as different as code and machining.

I recently 3D printed the part-for-part remake of Deckards blaster and love it so much, 3D printing is the best
Adam! If you haven't already, watch the movie "Prospect", if only for the suits, the "throwers", and the ship. All practical, custom-built props, and beautiful production value!
You can resume the print even after a power outage depending on what printer/slicer you are using.
I had that issue today, shortly after I watched this video. Thankfully my CR-10S resumed without much issue. 13hr of a 1 day 6hr print.

I have found that when clamping crushable tubes that putting a mandrel in it helps.
I've had my tumbler running since Monday. 8 hour runs, then new pieces in.

I wish I had pictures, but we used to use rock tumblers and they were so loud. We built a "sound proof" housing for them. Definitely saved our ears and sanity.
