  • Problem: I've dragged along an inexpensive portable/folding bed step for the last 5 years that rests on my rear tire and it has worked great for the most part, but sometimes I forget to bring it along, especially if I'm not towing. That leaves me in a position wanting a step to reach into the side of the bed on my truck, and so when I heard about the AMP Research BedStep2 specifically designed for the side of trucks, I figured I'd give it a try. I've seen the BedStep2 installed on SRW (single rear wheel) trucks, but I've never seen one on a dually. In today's video I'll give you a full review and the install details for the AMP Research BedStep2 on my 2021 RAM 3500 Dually (8' long bed). I believe this exact part number, 75419-01A, will fit all 2019-2023 RAM 3500 long bed dually trucks, but definitely double check your fit with the manufacturer to confirm as they have many different variants specific for each truck model. Note this video is NOT sponsored by the manufacturer...I spent my hard-earned money on it so these are my own personal and unbiased opinions.

    I installed a bed step 2 last week. Got an Amazon return for $125. Thought it would take an hour or two to install. 2 days to get the bed bolt out. I only had a 3/8” drive 18mm socket and could not get leverage on that bolt. After acquiring a 1/2 drive 18mm socket and finding my breaker bar, I finally got that bolt out.
    I could not find a 17/32” drill bit anywhere locally. I used a 1/2” or 16/32” bit and reamed the hole a little to get the riv nut inserted.
    Now that it is in, I like it. I do understand why I got it cheap as a return, it was not as easy to install as you made it look! I am glad you walked me through it so I knew it actually could be done!!

      Wow, that's a great price. Nice find! I'm really enjoying my step still. I like that it's closer to axle compared to the Ford and Chevy ones that are by cab.

    I have the Ram factory step, I use it some but, I find using a fold up aluminum step bench works great. I can position it any where around my Ram dually and use it to make stepping up into and out of the truck bed easy. Also it is nice to have to look in to the engine compartment, if you need something to sit on while airing up tire or cleaning wheels etc. After use I just fold it up and clip it to the bed cleat. Thank you for sharing this video I will have to think about the side step.

    I installed this step almost two years ago on my dually which is identical to yours. Identical hitch. My purpose was as yours; to make it easy to operate the hitch controls. I also had the tire step but didn't care for the inconvenience. However, I did find that the reach I had without a fifth wheel hooked up was way more than I had once the trailer was attached. I found I couldn't reach the locking pin on the hitch as I was having to fit myself between the bed rail and the trailer. I even tried left foot on the Amp Step and the right foot on the dual tire and just could not maintain my balance to reach the pin comfortably. I ended up having to go back to the tire step for hitching. In part it depends on where your pinbox is situated relative to the overhang on the fifth wheel. I will be interested to hear how far your reach actually is once you have the trailer hooked up. However, the Amp step is nice for reaching stuff in bed. Even at that price point, after using it for almost two years, I would buy it again. I noted you also had a problem drilling into the bed support rail. That metal is extremely hard and even using a new bit, it was a challenge. As well, I noticed that the fuel filler hose was rubbing so used some split heater hosed over it for protection. Hope you find my comments useful.

    Great video...I have this step sitting in my garage waiting to install on my '23 dually. I had one on my '17 dually, which I traded in. Of course, the '23 is a different part number. Anyway, I thought the price was crazy...I paid $174 for the same step in 2018.

    Without your video the install would have taken me at least 1 or 2 days. 4 hour slater I got it installed. No WI easily reach my hitch and the bed of my 3500 dually.

    We have a 2020 Chevy HD, and that step in the bed is one of the best things about the bed. It is ironic that 70 years ago we used to have step beds, and then we went away from it. Why did it us 70 years to figure out we needed them again???

      Agree, Chevy beat everyone to the game on steps. Simple detail, but super useful.

    I have the same side step in addition to the factory step on the rear. I’m not a fan of the side step - too far forward and a bit low. We full time in fifth wheel and travel around the country and ended using the wife’s 1 ft and a half collapsable plastic folding step stool. Ended up stealing that and got another one for her inside. Super lightweight and folds up for a small footprint and keep in the bed. Makes life a whole lot easier for hitching and unhitching the 5ver. Hardly ever utilize the side step now. Just my 2 cents. Anxiously awaiting your centramatic video!!!

    Do you know if any of the AMP-Research BedStep2 models will fit a 2022 RAM 3500 Limited Dually Megacab? I contacted AMP Research to ask and a customer service rep replied they don't have one for the dually. Not sure if they just didn't make one specifically for the Megacab dually but maybe one of their models would still fit that application.

    • @AdventureRocks
      @AdventureRocks  Před rokem

      I am not 100% sure either. If any of the step models would fit I'd take a chance on the same one I used on my 8' bed. I would think the bed mounting point and leaf spring mounts are in same position on mega cab with short dually bed. Not sure if you can tell from the install portion of video or not...? Comparing yours? You'll have to let us know as I think one other has asked the same thing so far.

    I have both the exact same portable wheel step as you and the Amp Research side step on my 2015 F450 dually. The Amp Research I prefer to access my toolbox. However. to access my fifth wheel hitch/latch, I can not reach with the side step. I store my portable wheel step in my bed toolbox. Bottom line, I was disappointed in the Amp Research especially because of the price and double the price for the other side

    • @AdventureRocks
      @AdventureRocks  Před rokem

      Good points. Where does the AMP mount on your F450 dually? I've started to notice that all the OEM steps molded/cut into the bedside are closer to cab on the new Fords and Chevys. So on long wheel base trucks like yours and mine if step is next to cab it's just a glorified tool box step when in that location. I like how AMP designed it to mount closer to the axle on the RAM longbed version as I can reach my fifth wheel hitch and tool box...it's a nice compromise (@ 04:10 demo).

    • @AdventureRocks

      Some sites are showing the part number 75417-01A is compatible with Mega Cab and 6'4" bed...but oddly the official manuacturer site does not list it compatible on a 3500 dually. So might have to research on that one further? If you have a SRW mega cab pretty sure this will work, but double check me: 75417-01A

      @@JTRM3 It's possible same one I installed might work on your mega cab dually...just not 100% sure. If your leaf spring hangers and bed frame mount looks like mine I'd say more likely. But, it's possible RAM used some different dimensions on the mega cab dually.

      Should be the same as a 21 as long as it is a long bed.

      @AdventureRocks  Před rokem

      Yes, think AMP Research hasn't updated the year, but pretty sure 23 is same as far as frame goes since it is a carry-over. Definitely check out install portion and see if your 23 looks same, but I'd say good chance you should be fine on the fit.
