After this video, I immediately bought the book. I waited for the book to ship and I was as excited as a little girl waiting for a puppy to come home.
I finished the book in 3 days and my god, it was one of THE BEST thing I've ever read my entire life.
Thank you, Zealous Creative. I'm really looking forward to similar future project.
Wow, what a great review-thanks! We recently released a graphic novel follow-up to our other short film, Zero. Check it out here: bit.ly/Zero-The-Beginning

Sorry, but can you tell me the name of the book? I’m really interested in it.

Honestly, this is such a sad story. Their entire short life is spent working and desperately hoping for a friend while fighting their extinction.
They don’t die when they disappear, according to the book they just get teleported to outside the workshop
:(
I haven't read the book but if they're hoping for a friend why doesn't the previous creator just make one more since he seemed to have nearly half of the time left when he finished the first one.
@@SC-zl6gs that is exactly what I thought too!!

How can people find this piece of art even remotely creepy or nightmare inducing? This has to be one of the best and most beautiful animations I’ve ever seen. There’s also brilliant music to back it up.
It is super creepy.
@@mapron1nobody cares what you think vladimir
The animation is very well made and i can't even imagine how many hours of work must have been put into this, but none of that's the creepy part. Just imagine what it would be like to live for about a day, and within that time all you would be good for and the most you could accomplish is to create and animate another one of your kind. The ending hit hard for me, especially considering that the second character realized this as well, that they are basically purposeless. That really existential moment of the clock ticking would be overwhelming to any of us.
If any of them failed to make a new one, who knows what would happen, if the time's up before one of them finish and they perish without anything to show for it, the entirity of their legacy could turn to dust, because there would be nobody left animated. Who knows, maybe i read the situation all wrong, but that's the beauty of the lack of context.
Overall, i agree. This isn't scary, nor nightmare-inducing. It's just cold and suspenseful, that's all.
Its because of the mask. Its pretty clear.
The fact that this guy is still puting hearts and replying comments after 8 years is amazing
He did it again

This short perfectly encapsulates the human condition of picking up the tools of the ones before us time running out scurrying to leave others better off
This is honestly a pretty sad, vicious cycle.
You mean the cycle of life?
MattyDove no, more like the cycle of being created by your partner/SO/maker and then only having the amount of time in the hourglass to recreate your said counterpart before you perish, then the same goes for your counterpart after the time is up.
Not really. I don't want to spoil anything but you really should read the book. The link to get it is in the description.
They get to be together, to look forward to that. Many people toil endlessly and never get to 3:41, they get that moment over and over

Just started the book and it is interesting to note how there are a couple contrasts to this film and the opening chapter. The film implies that Allegro was unsure of how to wake Sonata (his successor) and attempted several things before consulting the book for advice. The book gives the impression he was immediately aware that music was the key to her birth.
Also love how the music in this is actually not just part of the narrative, but is actually present in the process of making, and is what Spurs Allegro on with the urgency needed to perform his task.
You can see Allegro attempting several things before consulting the book and, as a last effort, attempting to wake Sonata using music.
@calciummother re-read @NerdTrap 's comment again. He is pointing the differences between the short and the book
I was about to comment the same, in the book the creation process has notable differences
Ty 4 this insight since im not a musician i cant reach that lvl of interpretation. But instead going 4 a more poetic way to take it showing how the circle of life goes and how humanity survives doing a tranference of knowledge but art is what make us want to live. At least that was my take.
this is how life feels. doing “what we’re supposed to” until our time runs out just so another person can do the same thing, and we’re told we’re doing something noble. as The Maker finds out in this, the only true form of escape is self-expression

This is one of the greatest stop-motion works of all time. All of the details. The implied worldbuilding. The reveal at the end. There is absolutely no dialogue but the story is still communicated so well. Animation truly is storytelling through motion, with this short being a prime example. I have nothing to criticize this short about. Any grievances anybody could have about this animation comes down to a matter of taste and personal opinion. Objectively speaking, this is effectively a perfect work of art.
It’s honestly the epitome of the story of our lives. It’s as soon as we figure out how to make another one of us that we are gone.

Art touches a place in your soul that can’t speak for itself and springs forth. Everyone interprets it differently and sees something in it that speaks directly to them.
Your piece was so beautiful, it’s so concise and yet at the end I burst into tears. Time is fleeting. We have such a small window to create something that touches. You have created exactly that. From my heart to yours.
Thank you 🤍.
This is such an amazingly interesting world right here, an endless cycle of makers, presumably never ending just to make themselves once more.

Coming back to this beautiful masterpiece, what I had never noticed was the message it holds. We may look like we have a long time, but it’s possible our end is closer than we fear. When making an accomplishment, it must be passed on to those who need that chance of life. I think she was supposed to a daughter to him, not a wife. Notice how he took the time to show her the place and teach her what she needed to know, even though she was unable to reciprocate his affection or do anything for him. It's what parents do. They take care of us and when we are finally able to understand and appreciate them, it's often time for them to leave us.

That touched me so hard when I realized it was his daughter. It's the unfinished cycle of life.
That's why she was unresponsive at first, just like a child, her mind has to be build and once it's done you can have a brief moment of conscience with your parent before they are gone.
I also love the moment when he closed his eyes while playing. He closes them and gives it his all because he doesn't have time to do it again.

In my opinion, this story represents the cycle of human life: when a new generation comes to the world, it aquires the whole knowledge and skills of its parents, gives its greatest efforts to develop it, bring the progeny to the world and convey futher all the wisdom to the youth. When at the end it comes time for elderly to go, they are replaced, and the cycle goes on, yet since the prehistory.

meraki [may-rah-kee] (adjective)
This is a word that modern Greeks often use to describe doing something with soul, creativity, or love -- when you put "something of yourself" into what you're doing, whatever it may be. Meraki is often used to describe cooking or preparing a meal, but it can also mean arranging a room, choosing decorations, or setting an elegant table.

this concept of being in this non-stop loop where you race to put your lover together, only to spend a few seconds with them before they have to put you together is beautiful, but also somewhat terrifying.
not to mention the music and animation matches this concept perfectly, because the animation, on a technical level, is amazing, but the designs of the characters and setting also help put together this beautiful but morbid concept, and the music is just the icing on this cake of perfection.

Use your time wisely, and pass along what you know. Memento mori.
I get your message, but i dont think that memento mori fits into this story. This is a story of a never ending cycle, which in itself means that death isn't really important for these two characters. They spend their whole life trying to rebuilt one another, living numerous lifes in the process, or at least thats how i understood this.
I thought it just represented the futility of existence...
I know I’m sad
@@octopustophat9053 I am just saying what made more sense to me. As it is a message about how existence is fragile is a "deep" one as well
I suppose it depends on how a person interprets it. Art brings out something from the viewer (or listener), and that's a pretty good means of determining art from all the pretenders that try to hog the spotlight. As a father of three, I see in this the drive to be a part of the creative process, to bring those we sire to the point where they're able to take the book (so to speak), and do what they have been taught to do. I think it's significant that the male didn't immediately stumble on music as the awakening catalyst, leading me to think that he might have been brought to life by a different means. Like with my children, we all have to find that thing (or things) that will give meaning and purpose to the next generation. It's only then that we can find our own completion. Oh, and we're always under the clock, as this so aptly illustrates.
Dre Productions I have watched it but I know Latin

I encourage anyone who really understands the meaning of this piece of wisdom, to forgive the people who dislike this: perhaps is they simply cannot face the - undeniably hard - truth that other ones suspect - or perhaps even realize - about life and transcendence.
It is already difficult in life for a common good person, to save and keep a humble legacy and make others receive it.
..
... but if you even try to enhance that heritage, the only chance you have for achieving that, is to become a genius, a leader, or probably both, and that gets so difficult as becoming one in a million in the right way.
Maybe they were australians who tried to upvote instead
5k people who scared this faces
There are lots of degenerate children on this platform, or better say on the entire internet. They fear reality so their only defense against it is to be negative about it. Often when someone says the truth they call you a hater, abuser etc even tho the irony is they are those exact things. Later when that "told you so" moment comes they pull a victim card like it will magically justify their ignorant and idiotic way of life and somehow change anything. The damage has been done and the only enemy is your own self not being a realist, accepting facts and using common sense. Same thing with disslikes, you are being negative about someone's creativity and message, that is it, you can't undone the damage, you have spoken who you are.

cindy the cat I think he was creating someone to hand down knowledge that was handed down to him.
^ Yes, its a metaphor for what humanity just lives for

God DAMN I searched for this video once or twice a year for YEARS. I've posted threads trying to find it. Somehow typed in the keywords to find it again.
I've bookmarked it in as many ways as I possibly can this time.
Absolutely beautiful. Master crafted. I think the sands of time will be very kind to this art.
Glad you found it again! And don't forget, there's a follow-up book: bit.ly/AboutTheMagnumOpus
Can’t believe it’s 10 years old now, time does fly
To me, this video is a great example of parenting. Parents put all the time they have into nurturing us, loving us, and educating us. And they're always looking at the clock because it reminds them of their limited time to be with us. And to prepare us for the world. And when they're gone. It's up to us to restart the cycle all over again.
The best way to honor your old ones is to take good care of your young ones
I watched this for the first time like 6 years ago, and i still come back here from time to time, everything about this creation is amazing, no matter how many times i see it.
Thanks for watching. If you're a reader, you may like to check out the book that expands upon this story - bit.ly/AboutTheMagnumOpus
@@zealouscreative Im brazilian, so I speak portuguese, do you have the book in this language??
The entire struggle of human life in just 5 minutes... Probably how exactly it feels.. like a glimpse...
Amazing...
Exactly how I feel...
❤🙏🔥👏
Still the best short film I've ever seen. Absolutely stunning from start to finish 11 years later.
I like this but its sad they cant be together
They were, even for a moment.
@@professorcontrol9708 based on the synopsis for the book thats a sequel to this, its seems they do not die when time runs out, but are taken away to live with the rest of the maker community, thats as far as i know.
She wasn’t made as a partner, she was made to continue the cycle
so you're implying that she was made to be a partner?
what better partner than one who can bring you back?
If I was one of them I would probably have had ruined the loop
XD
Then you'd be the main character of the book
or perhaps expand the loop? make 3 instead of 1? 3 make 9? ...
Me too, among all of my siblings, I'm the stupidest one XD
If I was one of them, it would look like the ugliest thing because I rushed, or it would be unfinished because I keep redoing it because it looks ugly.
I have adored this since I first saw it about ten years ago. Keep coming back every few years to watch. Utterly beautiful & magical! 🥲
毎年見てます。可愛くて、美しくて、少し切なく、どこか不気味。映像も然ることながら音楽も素晴らしい。
This was made 8 years ago
And it’s better than most clay animations nowadays
i mean not really
@@boponthewee7585 it really is
@@ferneagle5393 i mean im gonna be honest they havent really been getting worse though
@@ferneagle5393 not to mention some parts look a little awkward
I mean, we dont really have Clays animations that much
This Paul Halley guy literally deserves a Grammy award. This is like Vivaldi level of composition.
👏🏼👏🏼
Yeah, he's amazing. And self-taught.
@@zealouscreativehow is he doing?
Is he okay??
i ve discovered this piece of art 6 years ago and it still make me wanna cry. Beautiful!
My uncle was the first person to show me this when it first came out, he’s no longer here but it has been such a treat coming across your video again. Beautiful video❤️
An endless cycle of creation, life, and death.
Ahhh! Ugh! The feels! Why?!
this is how the world fucks you in the ass
Sounds familiar

We will live. They will die.
I think the message is that life always repeats itself
exactly
Naomi Henriquez i heard its life is what you make it
Naomi Henriquez no gangs not it to day we watched it in class in arts so no we said it something else keep guessing
No, its about love, sometimes you need more than just common sences, sometimes you need a little magic and empathy in relationships with other people.
Mexus 9 Ye I guess?
came across this video in 2012-2013 and i still watch it, i love it so much
I remember watching this when I was 5 or 6 and for all these years I thought it was a fever dream I had when I was little. This is amazing.
My mom showed me this video when I was probably eight, and it was one of those memories that stuck with me but I had no way to reference back to. I stumbled across this by chance. I remembered the story as being really impactful, and it still is, not to mention that the animation is fantastic. Thanks for giving me weird nostalgia and an awesome short film!
We're so glad to hear our little film has come back into your life.
Same here! I stumbled across it one night and only just came back thanks to “the cat with hands” film weirdly enough
