    I think the most freaky thing here is how Satan goes from comforting and almost pleasant to threatening so quickly. He kindly invites them in, he offers the kids their favorite fruit, he smiles and lets them join him when they ask. He seems so friendly and inviting, even if strange. After bringing the people to life, his behavior changes. He doesn't think twice before squashing the people fighting over the bull. He destroys the entire tiny town with no remorse, simply saying that the kids need to stay out of danger's way. He goes from making himself seem safe and friendly to clearly showing that he's not. He's simultaneously so human and familiar, yet inhuman and alien. It's a perfect example of the uncanny valley, and honestly I couldn't think of a more fitting way to depict Satan

    • @josueamaya3390
      @josueamaya3390 Před 9 měsíci +258

      to be honest i thibk thats the coolest part. he's technically not changing his behaviour, he never changes who he is for he has no moral code. To him good and evil doesn't exist for like he said "I can do no wrong, for I don't know what it is." There's no real emotion behind any of his acts. They are just a depection so we as the audience can understand better what his thought process is. Since after all we are humans, we need to see emotions to understand.
      If you've read the story from which this animation was inspired by. One of the best examples the story gives is like how we see bricks. We don't think of them as emotional real creatures, when we talk about them we don't relate any emotions to them, they're.just bricks, if one breaks we can make another. Same though process goes on is Satan''s mind, humans are just creatures that you can remake if they die, their emotions don't matter to him for he doesnt have any, for they arent real outside of the human mind.

      Satan himself is a morally subjective being. This means he can depict himself in any fashion. The best way to describe Satan is twisted.

      Satan wants to force the humans on Earth to act a certain way. He does this using religion and government. He instills unnatural customs such as a king who rules others, despite everyone being equal and the same.
      The creatures on this island are created in the image of GOD, but they are bound by their physical world. They are bound by language. They are bound by time/health, and how they perceive their world.
      One danger religion has introduced to the world is Good vs Evil. GOD is everything/infinite however cannot be explained with words, like love.
      Once you accept everyone is perfect like a leaf is perfect or a river is perfect or the clouds are perfect, you realize this is just an experience, one you should enjoy.
      Just like the clay figures, we are eternal beings who are experiencing time. Their souls simply need a body with energy (Satan used energy to bring clay to life)
      Once their bodies are dead, the energy is recycled just like the body. Idk what happens with the souls.
      From my viewpoint, this is amazing and it actually makes me very curious about everyone involved in the making of this, imagine being able to learn what they think of the experience.

      This portrayal of the character is misleading because in the book he's just explains his origin and how he is 16,000 years of age, and how he, as an angel, doesn't have sin within him. Right or wrong are meaningless human concepts that do not apply to him. He just sees human beings the same as fruit or clay. The moral code is just a human characteristic that has no meaning in the universe where he habitates. As soon he's interrupted by the tiny people, he kills them with indifference to continue talking, because for him, it's just like turning the volume down on a speaker. The killing has no meaning or effect on him or his explanation. In the book, he's not annoyed by them.
      However, the problem with this character is that he's from an incomplete story by Mark Twain, so, if you read the book, you'll notice that sometimes it's not the character of Satan speaking but just him ranting about how he saw human life, and going back to the character afterward. This animation mixes that.

    what i found more disturbing wasn't the massacre of everyone in the village, rather the end where Satan makes the island slowly disappear while talking about life. it's deeper and creepier than a catastrophe destroying everyone
    Also, i love how the writers depicted Satan in this movie. instead of some monster that banishes people to hell and tortures people in a dimension he rules over, he is a lonely being that spends eternity analyzing species and animals, like mankind. He creates life and simulates it, only to be let down by the pitiful human race and the death humanity causes. Then he destroys it and tries again. He spends eternity experimenting, building and breaking using his power. A theory for a story for this depiction could be that God sent Satan to this place to teach him a lesson about life, creation, and ruling a lesser species, and that all things will come to a violent end.

      He was disgusted by the villagers greed over the cow. Yet he knows no right from wrong? If that is so, why is he disgusted? It's because God made humanity on a higher level than him, we are made in the image of God, which made him profusely jealous. So he looks at every flaw with judgment. Hence why he encourages sin to use us against God. His name wasn't Satan. He became Satan. Satan is a representation of everything disgraceful.

      @neroidius6915 Před 4 měsíci +9

      I like the theory more that he secludes himself here out of his own spite and jealousy of the abilities of God and humanity. God can create perfect worlds, and after Satan soiled God’s creation of humanity with original sin, the next best thing he could do after being banished from Heaven was hole himself up in his own plane of existence (meaning that this dark void is probably hell) and try to create his own world and life, maybe to prove himself superior to God. But his jealousy and greed constantly keeps him from succeeding. Even when he makes a functioning kingdom, even when things are going smoothly, his own sinful tainted nature always keeps his creations from reaching heights like humanity and other creations of God have risen to. If it’s not Satan’s own citizens fighting over each other, it’s Satan’s own lack of mercy and low tolerance for the slightest imperfections, which completely contrast God’s merciful philosophy, AND lead Satan to crush his creations under his iron fist, solidifying how he could never reach God’s level of perfection or creativity.
      Furthermore is his line “I can do no wrong, for I do not know what it is.” Solidifies his perpetual denial that it’s because of his deceitful and selfish way of life and his disconnection with his own creations and choices, blaming them instead for taking responsibility for what he does

      Honestly, I like to imagine that the Satan in the movie, is the actual Satan. In the book, he is described as a boy, a human looking boy, and I remember he’s described looking like an angel. The Satan in the movie looks imposing, and has this eerie presence to him, while in the book the characters feel calm around him. Also in the book, Satan crushes the clay people with his hands while still talking to the main trio, and doesn’t look away form them. In the movie, he deliberately squashes the clay people, and makes them suffer beyond belief. And sure, in depictions of the Bible, Satan is described being as looking human, and being beautiful, but I’m sure as a ruler of an entire realm, and having odd abilities, I’m sure Satan is just taking a different form.

    Seeing this makes me kind of sad for Mark Twain. If you look into his biography, you find out that all of his children and his wife died long before he did, himself, leaving him very much alone in the world. It definitely jives with his general outlook on humanity as a whole. He seemed to forget that his wife and children were human themselves and died of illness rather than the actions of any one person. It also gives credence to the idea that depression is kind of like a tar pit, it's easier to just let yourself be sucked in. It feeds on itself like a disease because it basically IS one, as scientists now are discovering. Of course, he had every right to be depressed but it's sad that he lived in a time before things like psychology or grief counseling. Poor guy.

      which is also true, though. If you couldn't read and didn't stop because of a sign, no one could accuse you of intentional wrongdoing. You simply didn't know better.
      And Satan refers to intentionality. He knows no wrong cause he was once holy, hence he only acts in good faith. The thing here is he is too smart for an angel, which gave him the ability to decide for the greater good, and the benefit of all that is holy. He saw humans as the flawed beings that we are and with God in mind, he tried to protect the rest of His creation (thus, ignoring God's will, but never maliciously).
      Those are just my two cents, but I do understand if you just commented without analyzing it philosophically.

These beings weren’t contributing to the Universe, they didn’t matter in Satan’s eyes. It didn’t care about the clay-people’s well being, the only way it would have cared is if they served Satan, which it doesn’t need anybody to do. "He" vied so strongly for Jehova's affections, to the point of wanting to become as great as "Him", in an effort to make "Him" proud; So when humans were created, to Lucifer, it would have appeared that they took over Jehova's affection. Thus, it stands to reason that "He" would hold the humans in contempt.

    What an incredible scene.
    Satan is incapable of lying; only deceive. The ultimate deceiver. Hence the mask he has to wear to convey emotions.
    When he gives them fruit struck me too. Perceived as a kind gesture but also Satan's proclivity to reward (and punish, which we see later). This is also the fruit from the tree of knowledge. But they weren't tricked into eating, they were merely asked if they were hungry and they accepted.
    Satan is all about his emotions as well. When the clay people are fighting over the steer, instead of just letting them sort themselves out in the situation, he decides to get angry and intervene. This could very well be the Old Testament "God" dishing out revenge. A true, good God would let his creations learn and experience for themselves, with very little intervention, if any at all.
    Satan is impatient like a helicopter mother. All emotion and no wisdom. Even the children knew this manner of behavior was wrong. Even if he could just make more people, they saw it as wrong for taking their lives simply for having a little disagreement.
