Exactly why I love watching programming vids. It's those little unexpected things that happen and the little voice in my head goes "don't brick it, don't brick it".
Wow so you can't hit a pothole in a pickup truck, and if you do, you have to buy a new steering rack AND program it?!? Why does it seem like new vehicles are all "overpriced junk" nowadays?
We had a Camaro in the shop today that just had its second Delco rack put in within a year. That’s why I’ll be holding onto my 96 Z28 and my older Chevy truck for the foreseeable future.
Not sure I'd call it boring. Frustrating definitely, but satisfying when you finally get things working again! Try scanning that QR Code if you can be bothered Keith 👍
Can these stock power steering setups have a buzzing noise when accelerating and disappears when slightly turning wheel back and forth while driving straight?
So this is the the update patch so that the power steering control module won't hold the assist code all the time it'll make it an actual history code like it's supposed to be? Is that what we're doing here? Because if not yo all you have to do is clear all the codes after you put in a new battery or after you charge a battery that's been down a bit from daily idling like a cop car or a taxi or a delivery driver.
Can I do this by myself? I’m not a GM Tech but I’m not about to sit and pay GMC to have the same issue fixed. I bought a TDS subscription. Is there a special OBD2 cable I should use?
@@TheMrDeathbiker I’m not a GM Tech, but I bought the programmer since I had to replace the rack on my 2012 Camaro ZL1. The video definitely helped me figure it all out.
Good morning! I’m so glad to have come across your video as I’m experiencing the same problem with my 2018 Silverado. The “steering assist disabled” message came up and I brought the truck to the dealership where it’s been for almost a week now! The technicians are at a complete loss as to why or what the message is related to. The shop manager even went as far as to blame me! They were completely opposed to watching your video as it would be against their policy...do you have any suggestions? Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Looking forward to your response!
The good old RPO tag hunt 😂. I swear they do that just to piss you off. I usually print them out and when I’m done I’ll fold it up, write RPO codes on it with a sharpie, and put it in the owners manual folder.
Well that's just it, no flat rate Technician in the dealership want's to spend his/her time searching for a label, that might have all kinds of crap covering it just like this video showed. GM has now given us the RPO list in SI and in TIS, which IMO is so much easier to look for.
Does anyone know it the stabiltrak light might benon because of that? I replaced my steering rack and got the same codes and the light on too. My maxisys scanner doesn't want to access the module to calibrate it . do I have to go to the dealer ?
Keith, use a barcode scanner app on your phone to scan that 3d QR code on the VIN label on the LH b-pillar. It has the VIN and all the RPOs. Gotta love GM for changing it up.
@Don N The move away from printing all the RPO codes out on the SPID label happened between 2017 and 2018, so if your Terrain is older than that it'll still have the classic SPID label.
Sorry I was yelling use the QR code on door tag it has all the RPO'S for you. I do alot of these Power Steering programmings they dont like impact one bit.
I'm gonna guess that the steering angle sensor module at the base of the column needs a centering relearn in the EBCM so that it matches the new rack. Jus my guess
Keith have u ever done a radio replacement with the SPS and it said failed but it still worked? That list in the SPS was the exact list I needed to see when I upgraded the radio in my friend/customer 2012 Enclave. Put a 2017 Traverse My Link GPS/RES in and found out very quickly that the newer GMs require SPS to do the vin relearn. Took it to Buick and they told me they tried and failed....But when I turned on the vehicle the "Locked" Was gone and everything worked. I saved $ 139.00. I wonder did he do me a solid?
At least GM is consistent - it's been a steady, year-by-year decline in quality that never stops! 11 model years after I bought my '07 Silverado, it STILL has that same, exact ANNOYING dinger at volume-level 12! I see they are super helpful in the programming aspect, too, letting you perform several minutes of unnecessary typing - I guess it's too much work for them to have the program read the VIN from the PCM. Then they top off their appreciation for the techs that will be servicing these trucks by changing every little thing that had been kept the same for 100 years! Where the hell is the RPO sticker now??? Probably on top of the transmission ... 😠🤯 Sorry for the rant, Keith - GM pisses me off! Great video, though! 😊 I'll be watching for Part 2. 👍👍
Hahahahaha I agree that door chime is annoying. The GM software he is using does read the VIN. Once he builds the vehicle @ (2:10) in the video the VIN gets pulled up. Once the program has pulled the VIN it stays there until you exit the program, which he does @ (4:34) in the video because the software crashed. RPO labels are a thing of the past, GM provides the list in SI or as he shows through TIS. Sorry forgot to add that yes, GM transmissions now have RPO labels called (TUN) Transmission Unique Number - GM is charging a lot indeed
@Don N - Mine is too, but no "off" option, and the lowest setting is full blast. Tempted to find the wire to the speaker from the BCM, and solder in a fat resistor ...
This happened to me after try to programa an additional key with an inexperienced technician, after reading a post that unplugging the battery for 10min the message will disappear, I tried and it works. Be careful not to break the nut that tightens the battery positive pole because it happend to me. So try this first expend money (tahoe 2017)
That server error happens all the time. The RPO lable is missing because gm is being cheap, that QR code that you saw when you opened the drivers door you are supposed to be able to scan and it brings up all the vehicles RPO codes. I usually just look them up online anyways. its easy when you have electronic ros and you can copy and paste the VIN!

@@jeffejames1did you ever get your truck fixed I have a 2020 Silverado dealership is saying it needs a new rack. Isn't the module built in to the rack? Did they reprogram your module after they replaced the rack
I should say to everyone here, if you have multiple U codes in other modules, there are very different reasons for intermittent loss of power steering ! Yeah it's supposed to be a history code and it's a update update to the module that you have to get I don't know when this video was made but the update is not yet available as of right now but if you clear if you use Advanced scan tool to clear the U code out of there you'll be good and it shouldn't pop up again until you change the battery again or disconnect and reconnect the battery a way to avoid that is of course to use a battery saver while you're changing the battery or while you have to remove power of the battery from the car but you can still apply a little bit of power to trickle memories from the 2020 models and up you don't have to do memory saver anymore because it's all eprom, but you'll still get rather than a power steering steering assist you'll get a lane keep assist might not work again it's a all part of the power steering module this needs to be updated, which hasn't yet come from GM.
