PS4 PRO Fan Noise FIX - Thermal paste & dust - Before/After TEST

  • This is a follow-up to my first video in which you can find a "trick" to silence your PS4 Pro without using any tool. In this one, we are going to replace the thermal paste and remove dust. The before/after test shows the fans spins at a much lower speed after the disassembly, going from 60db to 35db. This is the PS4 Pro CUH 7016b.
    I hope you enjoy the content, I most certainly enjoyed making this video.
    The app displayed on the smartphone can be found on the Play Store: "Sound Meter" by Splend Apps.

    CORRECTION: Please, don't apply as much thermal paste as I did. A small drop/stripe is enough. Have fun !

    • @chicozeb
      @chicozeb Před 3 lety +54

      In fact, the amount that you applied is a bit on the "more than enough" side, but all the excess will come out, and it's better too much than too little. A lot of times the heatsinks are not completely flat and they don't sit properly on the apu(or gpu and cpu,specially on laptops). If you spread the thinnest amount of paste and assemble the heatsink and then remove it, you will see that a lot of times the heatsink touches 4/5 of the cpu... A bit more thermal paste helps on this situations.
      The spread method, that you used, is always better than a drop in the middle, because it covers the entire chip, while a drop may or may not cover it.
      There are a lot of tests on youtube regarding methods of applying thermal paste. Check gamers nexus for that kimd of content. Even der8auer talks about this on a gamers nexus video.
      The only time that too much can damage anything is only when the thermal paste is conductive(liquid metal) or capacitive(arctic silver 5). But from a thermal standpoint, too much is better than too little.
      But there are a lot of thermal paste gurus out there that say its not because of the air bubble myth. The pressure between the heatsink and apu is too high. There are no bubbles. The air comes out with the pressure. And the excess thermal paste also.
      The only thing that you must be careful is when you remove the screws that hold the heatsink, it's better to unscrew them a bit at a time and on a cross shaped fashion, to evenly remove the pressure on the apu. If you unscrew them like you did, sometimes theres too much pressure on one corner of the apu and it will crack. Not so much on the ps4, because the apu has metal all around the chip pcb, to avoid this. But on a lot of situations(like laptops), the chip die cracks. Do the same when screwing them. A bit at a time, and cross shape.

      @@chicozeb Wow, thank you for your thorough explanation! I'm sure it will help a lot of people in this comment section :)
      I'll definitely keep in mind that the screws holding the heatsink should be unscrewed a bit a time and on a cross shaped fashion.

    • @chicozeb
      @chicozeb Před 3 lety +2

      @@carloselgamer1 No. If it's capacitive it says on the box. The capacitive ones that i know are arctic silver 5 and ic diamond(not sure if is capacitive or conductive). But arctic mx4 is not very good. It has an high silicone content and will pump out over time. Personally i use non silicone pastes. Arctic silver 5, thermal grizzly hydronaut(not kryonaut, it has silicone and temperatures are 3 to 4°C higher after a few months) and cooler master master gel maker(never tried this one, but it should last long because it does not have silicone).

I changed the thermal paste and thermal pads and wow, can’t even hear the fans now. I read somewhere that Sony either didn’t use enough thermal paste, or they used a cheap paste that dried up and therefore didn’t make a good connection. Who knows. Just glad it’s quiet now.

      The purpose of cleaning your PS4 is to improve heat dissipation. I don't think that it will help much (or at all) with lag in game.
      As you, if the PS4 hasn't been used much it should be good inside ☺️

      @SiriusMonkey  Před 3 lety

      Yes, but make sure the entire surface is covered with thermal paste :)

  • @knightsljx
    @knightsljx Před 2 lety +1

    The amount of thermal paste is fine. The APU is a bare die without a heat spreader, so you need full coverage, spreading it first is good practice here. Arctic MX4 would have been a better choice, MX4 is the best general purpose thermal paste. it conducts heat well, it's non electrically conductive, it's cheap, and the lifespan is 8 years (claimed). I never bother with anything else.
    One other trick is to get a large thermal pad, about 5x5cm, and stick it on the metal plate cover (00:52) over the memory chips, to help conduct heat to the actual metal back plate. currently there's an air gap. and replace all the thermal pads with better ones while you're in there

    • @SiriusMonkey
      @SiriusMonkey  Před 2 lety

      Imperial Knight, thank you for your feedback! ⚔️ I should've replaced the thermal pads as well. The positive results shown in this video lasted approximately 2 months. It would be more if I replaced the thermal pads and used a better thermal paste !

    The noise comes back because of the fan speed tweaked to low by Sony's firmware. If you had a jailbroken PS4 Pro, you can install PS4 Temperature app and set the fan speed to 66 degree Celsius which I did mine and your thermal paste will not dry out. And you could see the internal APU temp as well
