- After 15 years, the Toyota 4Runner is finally all-new for 2025. With many similarities to the recently redesigned Tacoma, the new 4Runner finally makes its way into the modern world - and loses its V6 in favor of four-cylinder power. In this first look video, Edmunds’ Nick Yekikian dives into the 2025 Toyota 4Runner, examining its new design, features and more.

Is the 4Runner new enough for you or did you want something more than a Tacoma with an SUV body? Let us know below!
The back seat on the 5th gen has a lot more space. Odd.
They will regret changing the bullet proof drivetrain of the 4 runner
@@damnjustassignmeone its crazy how all of the review videos try to say that the 4runner has never had spacious backseats even though it always has
The 4Runner now looks like a Wrangler competitor more than ever. I love that manufacturers are finally just sticking to the basics and making trucks, trucks. If you want a car, get a Highlander, Grand Highlander, or RAV4. Let the 4Runner and Land Cruiser be the cavemen we all want them to be.
No such talk
Except it's geometries are crap. So not competitive with Jeep or Ford
you must be smoking rocks
@@connoransberry6335 The Classic Jeep v Toyota argument. Yes, on paper a solid front axle and 3 locking diffs is better than IFS and only center and rear locker. But as SO many things in the automotive world, theory and practice are two completely different things. I think Toyota has more than shown that their setup works. I wouldn’t think twice about taking either of those rigs off road (Runner, Wrangler, or Bronco)
@@Soh90 I'm not talking IFS. I got no issues with that. An approach angle of around 30 degrees just isn't competitive with what Ford and Jeep offer at 40+. If you actually off road, you'll be scraping the face, underside, and rear over every obstacle.
I wish they kept the 4.0L V6 and just update to 6spd transmission.
yeah im really disappointed by this new gen of trucks and suvs from toyota, the new tacoma with the same turbo i4 as this 4runner does a 7.3-8 second 0-60 which is the same or worse than the old 4.0, I've seen a lot of stock 4.0 tacomas do 6 second 0-60s and even my 2007 FJ cruiser is faster than the new tacoma. Wish they would have at least made it an option to get a v6 one instead of this wack new i4
They just butchered it and they are trying so hard to justify how great it is. Not even jealous in the slightest with this new generation. No way is this thing more durable than the previous generation
Thanks for another great video, Nick! The scene looks amazing, but so does the car (and you)!
Good review. Thank you
The engine bay looks like an alien nest. Shoulda kept the V6, upgraded body, interior and tech. Don't complicate an off road vehicle.
Oh, it’s going to be a complicated mess when something so fragile as this becomes broken from offroading. Can’t wait to see what others post when things go wrong. I just hope im the wrong on the bad quality.
It has kinda grown on me (look wise) but still not sure about that 4cylinder but I guess we’ll see in the long run
Really curious how the MPG compares to my Ecodiesel Gladiator.
Is the second row removable or is it welded to the frame?
looks great, toyota has been making hybrids for almost a decade, they know what there doing only manufacturer
that has gotten it right.
Of course i do love the Land cruisers(300 & 250) but only here in Africa were they make sense but there in America the Sequoia & 4runner make alot of sense!.
I still believe Ford has made a massive mistake by not building the original Bronco concept which looked like a Tonka toy. At the very least they should make it and electrify it to distinguish between the current and an electric version. They are missing out on a money maker big time.
I love Toyota's simplicity, and durability !!!!!!
This does not have durability Ive worked on those hybrid packs and turbos. Let’s not get conned here about the new aged durability when it comes to everything out today. Even Ray Charles can see it. Like that Trd emblem that came from AutoZone😂
I feel like I'll be holding onto my 3rd Gen Tacoma for a bit. The new Taco engine didn't get more horse power with the turbo, and no better mpg with the 4-banger. I can't imagine the heavier 4-Runner is any different.
the bros dreams realized in one car. amazing.
Dude said it uses a pair of turbo charged four cylinder engines…they should have phrased that better, unless there actually is two turboed four cylinder engines under the hood.
There is already talk of putting v6 back in the tacomas and 4Runners. Toyota is the smartest car company and they know that the 4 bangers are just going to turn them into just another “better get rid of it at 100k” pile.
Really?! You think they will? I'd empty my bank account if they did.
Toyota announced it. Hopefully it won’t be just in trd pro or something 80 gs
If they were so smart then they would have made a genuine MK V Supra with a Toyota straight 6 instead of lazily rebadging a BMW Z4 and then making a super 3 cylinder for the GR.... makes no dang sense!! Sorry for the rant😂
Wow interesting. What’s your source ? Link?
@@hpmetabolics7558 i could rant for hours about how disappointed I am with toyotas new gen of trucks and suvs espescially with this 4runner, the only way its superior to the last gen is mpg, like cmon they made the backseat the same size as an FJC which aint even a 4 door and has more headroom😭 the talk of the old engines being less powerful is a whole load of bs, the 4.0 from the old tacomas, fj, and 4runner was great my FJ could dust one of these new i4 Tacomas or 4runners
1:07 "The new Forna (4Runner?) uses a pair of turbocharged four cylinder engines." A twin engined truck? Where do I sign?
It’s a taco runner. Toyota should have the face changed a bit to differentiate from the Tacoma, but they did the lazy route. Will wait for a few years to wait for them to work the kinks out.
us flag is so colorful but interior is dark , why toyota making vehicles with dark interior.. sad
Why doesn't the Lx600 count as a body on frame off roader
How is the back seat so much smaller when the overall vehicle is bigger?
4Runner back seats have always been cramped + it shares a lot of its architecture with the Tacoma. It's all about packaging
What he don’t understand is if you have reliability then fuel economy isn’t an issue. Fuel economy without reliability is trash
Elephent in the room question: IS it still built in Japan???
All 4Runners are built in Japan at Toyota's plant in Tahara, Aichi, or at the Hino Motors (a Toyota subsidiary) plant in Hamura.
So long 4Runner longevity...😠
5th Gen still King!
you were able to drive the 6th gen?
Some people don't care about EV, or FSD, they just prefer to drive .......
They ruined what had been a spacious rear cargo area by raising the floor for the i Force Max hybrid battery pack. Go with the base turbo 4 to get the normal rear cargo area.
But batteries uber cool. Save you an extra 1 mpg and you can say "I save dolphins on the reg brah" while tossing 47 plastic bottles worth of sports drink in the landfill......
They sure butchered it. But considering the turbo is on the lower trim models and the hybrid is on the upper trim, everything is becoming questionable with quality now. That Trd logo on the wheel looks like it’s from AutoZone🙈
I don think that turbocharged is gonna last 200.00 thousand miles a least.
Many many years ago when Ford introduced turbocharged 4 cylinders they were ridiculed how apt now that Toyota and others followed they are praised? Hm..
That old v6 was RELIABLE
It’s a taco…keeping my 2024 v6 limited
The 4 runner is to big and to heavy to have a 4 cylinder turbo pulling it around all the time. Big strain on the power plant
That a pass. It’s a plastic pos and heard bad things about the power plant.
4 cylinder turbo? Does anybody really believe this engine will be anywhere near as reliable? Nobody and I mean NOBODY bought the runner for gas mileage talk about complete detachment here.
And here we have it folks...back to the Toyota future...the 4Runner goes back to its 1984 roots...an "odd love child" between a pickup truck (nowadays the Taco) and the Landcruiser...LOL...NOT...
Really? They slapped in a laptop screen in there?
Garbage no Way !!!
4cylinder runner= 4runner 😂😂😂 speed limit babysitter for millennials.
The V6 is great. Instantly makes the 5th gen more desirable.
There's just nothing special about it. Need to be able to remove part of the roof.
so , now you talk s. h. it about the 5th gen for your video ta have more views , i guess anything that sells , right ?.
How unique 🤦♀️🤦♂️🤦
Does it work without fossil fuel? No? Then it is a bad vehicle.
In what way?
@@countschad It emits poison from its back end. And that is something we want to avoid - for our children, Right?
RIGHT???
@@wolfgangpreier9160 The poison emitted from the back end will not hurt anyone unless the vehicle is in an enclosed space (like a garage withe the door closed). If you're serious about polution, then advocate for total conversion to nuclear power.
@@countschad Yes it does. It hurts everyone. You included.
I know you are not important.
But my kids are.
Therefor: No more burning of fossil ressources.
If the manufacturers do not want to learn the errors of their ways we customers have to teach them.
Of course only if you care for your kids.
@@wolfgangpreier9160 The incorrect sentance stucture and the lack of continuity in the sentences you type makes me think that I am debating an AI bot. I will not reply further.
