Donovan Bailey Wins Gold in Men's 100 Metres at Atlanta 1996
/ cbcsports - Sport
This has to be one of the greatest moments in Canadian sports history. I remember watching this vividly as an 8 year old. (Now 33) I still get goosebumps watching it.
Same !!
@@pjaye3717 I have vivid memories of Donovan Bailey breaking the world record under 10 seconds here in Swanguard Stadium when I was like 9 or 10. Pretty crazy how that track is within walking distance from where I lived. He's inspired me to this day as someone who's action, no talk.
Agree!!! Also, the 4x100 relay in Atlanta! Still on the edge of my seat everytime I watch it!!
Ben Johnson was better.
Most definitely
one of the greatest calls in Canadian sports history.
And I agree with you 100%
The late Don Wittman with that famous call on that hot summer night in Atlanta!
Its absolutely right there with "Touch 'em all Joe!"
@@kevinbudzinski9576 the Olympics are not the same without him
@@ggqbc CBC Sports in general haven't been the same either because he was also a great hockey, football, and curling announcer
The man was in 2nd last place 30 metres into the race.
He overtook 4 guys in the last 50 metres.
Until I started sprinting, and getting formal coaching, I had no clue how difficult something like this really was. This is easily a top 5 of all time in the Olympics.
@@swoosh2724 so you're saying the other sprinters are natty?
@@gabriel.hongkong You’re a casual.
Textbook form by Bailey. Lead leg snapping down, driving through the track, arms pumping. Relaxed power. A beautiful thing to watch.
Donavan was boss that day! I remember working the night shift and driving to Oakville near Toronto from Scarboro to see him at the parade honoring him.
The was one of the better 100m performances I've ever witnessed. I, mean, he came from behind to not only win Olympic Gold, but setting a new WR, as well.
@Scotland1908 fastest? lol
Imagine what his time would have been had he gotten a good start?
Without false starts he'd have run 9.72
One of the few times I jumped out of my chair watching a sporting event. (The 4x100m win the week after, the 2002 and 2010 Olympic men's ice hockey gold medal game and the 2014 women's ice hockey Olympic gold medal game.
What a wonderful moment for Canada ! Today like Donnavan , Andrew De Grasse makes history by winning the the gold medal in men's 200 m. Even if it's not the 100m like Donnavan, it's wonderful for Andre and Canada. 🎖️🇨🇦
i love Andre
Still gives me chills every time! Bailey should have a statue downtown somewhere!
Agree .definitely a statue in his own town. I think he live in Ontario mississauga
IF hen had run for Jamaica he would have one beside BOLT, they would be statue buddies.
@@saintclaire7837 I agree with that bolt and Bailey
@@lesant7659 Oakville
I was always amazed at how Don Wittman could call any sport imaginable with tons of specific details & made it seem effortless.
great memories. Came here to see this in 2021, as I came to Canada in 2015, to understand the rich history of Canada 🇨🇦 sprints. LOVED IT 😍
Slow start and then comes back to smash everyone. What a race that was.
And claim a WR after.
That was an amazing race by Bailey and a great call by the commentators! Such redemption for Canada and Canadian Track and field after what happened with Ben Johnson in Seoul.
To this day, I still LOVE Donovan Bailey!! Such a great moment!!!!
You can say what you want, but this is the greatest accomplishment in Canadian sports history on the international stage.
A great win to be sure but it doesn't match up to Percy William's double victory at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics in the 100/200 m. sprints. I doubt if
a Canadian will ever win that double again.
I'll never forget this or the 2010 Golden Goal.
The best 100 ever when you factor in the drama. Man a Badman
What was the drama
Drama aside, still behind London 2012, Berlin 2009, Athens 04 ( considering the Star power) Beijing 2008, Tokyo 1991 and Mexico City 1968( first sub 10)
Good point.... 3 false starts?! The fatigue
@@auburnmann3630 DQ rules changed. Chill on that shade
I remember where I was. Trying to connect to dial up 14.4k internet for first time
Don Wittman was best CFL NHL Olympic broadcaster of all time. We had it too good with Wittman and Bob Cole Chris Cuthbert on cbc sports for so long.
Bailey's weakness is his start, if he even had an average start he would of ran around 9.75
I started crying after watching this, olympic is truly amazing, salute to you legend Donovan bailey from Kolkata India
I'll never forget where I was watching this and how great it was!!!
I don't 't know what happened in Canada, but what Donovan did made me happy although at the time I didn't know much about Canada. He was famous in Europe too. What a great athlete! Now I live in Canada, and I love all its athletes.
De Grasse is still holding down Canada
Imagine if he'd had a great start! He'd likely still hold the WR. That was an awesome memory we'll never forget!😍
Donavan Bayley is my favorite runner. For me he is the best of all times, he runs with a lot of style!
How do spell his name so wrong with it being in the title? 😂
4:09 i'm really touched by his expression during the most emotional part of the anthem
That was one of the Greatest moment in Canadian Sports and Olympic history 🇨🇦
This is a great example of drafting in 100m sprints, Donovan matched the strides of the sprinters next to him and safely over strides to move up
Bailey was the GOAT, one of Canadas greatest athletes. Canadians should be proud.
The mother of all comebacks, breathtaking 👌
My favorite Olympic moment!
It's actually insane he won this after such a slow start off the blocks. His running style is so aggressive with massive strides, an amazing win for the ages.
I still remember it like it was yesterday, the way he came back from behind
Donovan really had guts...good for him
Amazing leg lift and extension.
That dude had the best sprinting technique I ever watched
He would have easily broke into the 9.70's if he had a good start which would of been phenomenal at the time!
Still get chills watching this!
Remember this. Absolutely smashed it after a terrible start
Before there was Bolt, there was Donovan Bailey. The country was so proud
This fricken guy came out of the clouds....., Bolton musta been like "Dude ……………, WTF!!!"😎😱🙌
Coming back to watch the OG when Andre De Grasse and team won 4x100m relay in Oregon earlier this week!
Look at the ground Bailey made up, surely his straight line speed must be in the top 3 of all time. He is notoriously a bad starter, if he had a good start he would of clocked in the low 9.70's which would been out of this world then until Powell and Bolt arrived decade later.
You can literally see him switch into his next gear. Amazing technique towards the end, almost Cheetah like. His muscles are in full performance mode, his upper body is being used to propel him forward, longer strides, no flat feet. Very well done!
The most exhilarating 10 seconds in any sport
It still brings back all the chills of that moment that I had at the time. 👏👏👏
That was fantastic. Bailey just ate up the track coming from behind in a 100 meter race.
No doubt Bailey in 1996 was the Usain Bolt. The fastest man alive.
Him and joe carter made a lot of kids happy
This reminds me of Bolt during the 2012 Olympics. Coming from behind to win. I'm lucky I got to watch both of these live.
Ben Johnson, linford Christie and Bailey all yard man dem
This moment to me as a Canadian, singlehandedly made up for all the heartbreak I felt as a teenager after the Ben Johnson scandal cost him his 100 metre Gold medal. What a moment!!!
Came to rewatch since DeGrasse just won gold in 200m
Wow. 1996 was a heck of a year.
Who here in 2021 wants to go back to 1996?
i was 6 went this went down and my grandmas were watching this on ctv news back in the day CHILLS
Beautiful race. Beautiful man....and his face during the anthem was intense. I could watch this forever.
I think that moment changed how many Canadians saw themselves. A tremendous sense of pride and joy!! 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I remember watching this live and being so sad once I saw his start but then I was witness to something glorious and magical
So proud
Ahhhhhhhh just ah great feeling as a kid, thank you for that memory Mr B
His stride (that little hitch) was beautiful……loved watching this dude run…..
you are making love our sport again.
One of the greatest Canadian Olympic memories
I tear up every time I watch this. What a moment.
My first Olympic memory I was 10. I will never forgot my mom banging a wooden spoon on a pan and screaming "he did it, Donovon Bailey did it"
You go girl
Proud
Goosebumps
Danawan belli pls dont be angry be happy .you know that you won it
What a great call!!
ICONIC MOMENT
This feels like yesterday. I’m 36 now but man this race and 4x 100 was epic it gives me goosebumps 25 years later
Donovan was a beast.
He was absolutely phenomenal.
Donovan Bailey: The only man whose pomp and color following his win stand above all; he had exceptional expression and unrivaled manner of celebrating his victory.
As an American, this guy Bailey really crushed us when he beat Johnson. I thought it would die down but then Brett Hart brought it up on WWF and reminded the world lmao. That’s when I knew that it was time to throw in the towel and give the Canadians their 15 minutes of fame
Had he got a god start he would have ran 9.75 at least
The false starts hurt his start. If you go back and watch all the false starts, Bailey had a good jump each time. Its like he picked it up once he knew the race was on.
Not necessarily. Every sprinter has an finite amount of energy. A better start and perhaps his finish isn't as good. What would be the difference in saying if Boldon had a better finish, he would have won?
@@RKRKRK78 Had Boldon had a better finish he probably would have won... i might suggest at the same time if he had a worse start than he did... he would have finished further back than he actually did.
@@THE_CHOAS_ENGINE Are you being serious? I'm simply saying each athlete has their strengths and you can't just assume giving them a better start or finish will suddenly not affect other parts of their race. This is a ridiculous discussion.
so if he had a good start he would've eased up in the end but he had people in front of him that triggered him to catch up
like this comment if you agree with me
Who is here after watching Tokyo Olympics? Go CANADA! 😎🍁
Brings a tear to my eye was 15 years old watching in 1996.
My whole childhood I wanted to be a runner like Donovan, was pretty good for a while....so awesome 👏
I watched this in the US, at a convention with about a dozen americans sitting around me. Needless to say, I was the only one screaming at the end!
Don Wittman had the best voice for Canadian Olympics like how Bob Cole did for NHL. Filled you with excitement
Donowan bailey my idol
I haven't followed any track and field for a long time and I obviously respect the achievements of people like Usain Bolt, but the sprinters of the 80s and 90s were wild. Absolutely loved when Bailey called Michael Johnson a chicken for faking an injury and I'm American.😂
What a call...i think the commentator was more exhausted than Bailey
I train 1 hour a day and my speed increases and Donovan bailey is my 2nd favorite runner
Great stuff young man. I hope that you're your #1 favorite sprinter!?!
Jamaican born running for Canada Donovan Bailey, Jamaicans have a good history in the sprints 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 🇯🇲 🇯🇲
This was AMAZING to watch back then :)
So proud to be Canadian! Well done Donovan!!
Imagine the time he would’ve ran if he had a good start!
Here comes Bailey....He's got it...Yes indeed..T.
Wonderful memory.
Crazy strides
Boy he was flying, like kitt when you push the turbo boost button. Imagine if he had a great start💯🔥🔥🔥
Great commentary too
The fact that he did that, with that start, absolutely insane.
Bailey, legendary acheivement brah
Amazing run.
Was in college when this happened! Awesome
You could have represented Jamaica, Donovan Bailey!
Ahhh the sweet 9.84 seconds. I still remember this time in 2021.
Insane moment
He flinched right before the gun, attributing to his bad start. That finish though!
Bailey has always had a slow start though. It was always a matter of whether or not he could catch up.
That's why it's shocking to me that:
a. He once tied the world record for fastest 50m.
b. He beat Michael Johnson at the 75 mark in their 150m race. This was the race where the turn was at the *start* of the race and Johnson was considered the best turn runner at that point.
Bailey has given us great memories.
