AMD today announced its new Zen 5 CPU lineup for a release date of July 2024, including the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X, Ryzen 9 9900X, R7 9700X, and R5 9600X. These Zen 5 CPUs are a new architecture, but are supported on the existing AMD motherboards with AM5 sockets; however, AMD also announced its new X870 and X870E motherboard platforms (no word officially on the B-series chipsets yet). In addition to the Zen 5 and chipset announcements, AMD extended its life for AM5 into 2027 and beyond officially, citing success of AM4's life as a reason. For other announcements, the company will release new AM4 CPUs in July of 2024 with the 5900XT and 5800XT. It also has new Ryzen 300 AI CPUs, server products that we won't cover in depth today, and more.

Excellent news. I hope AMD get more motherboard vendors online quickly, I'm NOT going with ASUS anymore ... had way too many issues with their motherboards from USB ports not work, to 2 out of 4 memory slots not working, to board displays actually blocking some GPUs in slot 1. Hoping MSI come up with lots of AMD support.
Hopefully GN ask about MB prices, it's gone off the rails...
Yes AI is being pushed hard and when it facilitates bullshit like Microsoft AI recall spyware horseshit....it can fuck right off next to NFT's
Does the 9950X also have the NPU or is it only for the APU lineup?
Huge respect and love for using the Best of the Best "SONY XPERIA". Awesome man. I never noticed it before. But huge respect for using that phone.
The people taking a shot every time AI is mentioned must be absolutely hammered.

My man's gonna be have as many holes as SpongeBob, or American students.
Is anyone else completely uninterested in the "AI" hype angle AMD is pushing? It feels like it's more for investors than it is for us as consumers.
It's partly for investors but also partly for OEMs who will want to focus on shilling Copilot+ branded PCs that will need good NPUs to use the branding. The CPU based AI stuff is particularly useless for a gaming audience because even if you do want to run anything AI related your GPU is going to completely smoke anything a small NPU can do
Everybody in the semiconductor space is chirping about AI. Of course AI is part of the chorus.
But yeah, meh.
Screw just AMD, I don't like hearing AI in general.
when i hear "AI" that just translates into "Better Spy Device" in my head.
Only if by consumers you mean gamers and no one else
Best thing AMD said was 2027+ guaranteed support for AM5
It can't get any better! Intel has to step up their game still!
Alone the fact that AM4 is still supported is absolutely insane, that socket is 8 years old. Great for people still running an AM4 board.
@@DrakkarCalethiel True that! AMD knows that the end user wants, they do it.
Intel for some demonic reasons beyond my humble comprehension still insist on changing the sockets, just their current 12th to 14th gen run needs to be reviewed, I don't know but at this point, I am enjoying my personal AMD run - B650E + 7800X3D - and knowing that these sockets - AM4 and AM5 - will get this kind of treatment makes me so happy, I might be able to snag a CPU later on 2027 or so lol.

AMD knows supporting AM4 is great for their reputation. I don't expect they'll support it much longer, but at this point it's reached GOAT status in my book.
Cynically, this is their opportunity to re-price better manufactured, good bins of a mature tech node. Or these are the bins of the high-end dual die consumer line-up (5900X, 5950X).
Either way, the acknowledgement of AM4 as a platform is good.
AMD had to manufacture a lot of Zen 3 CCDs for their EPYC customers. This is just AMD getting rid of excess dies. AMD has to find creative ways to get people to buy Zen 3 because Zen 4 has gotten cheaper and Zen 5 will be pushing prices down further. Intel doesn’t have the opportunity to do this because their Xeons use different dies.
@@dex6316 True, but they also have a unique advantage, right now, that I have never seen before. DDR4 is still popular, as people upgrade older hardware. Companies are actually out there recycling old RAM ICs to put on their "new" DIMMs, keeping the supply high, and prices much lower than DDR5, even today (also, for many users, USB, PCIe, GbE/Wifi6, almost any new SSD, and almost any 4C8T+ CPU, are fast enough for their needs).

All that, but the fact they are actually decent performers too.. there seems to be zero downsides.
It's just a shame Intel still has more marketshare due to it's grip on OEMs. Most regular people are going to be stuck with Intel. Heck Dell to this day still doesn't offer an AMD option in their high-end laptop products.
Aye. I've built a couple rigs for myself with used mobos, and used laptop/SFF CPUs from eBay. On ASRock boards, PCI-e pass-through and ECC both work well. Something I like about AMD compared to other competitors is that their pricing has basically always remained consistent and fair. The 7000 series wasn't great specifically because it forced you to use ddr5 even with only a minor 1% increase in performance in SOME games, but other than that it's been great.
7900 XTX price is great for the performance. As a long time user, I've come to fall in love with this GPU for affordability, and now with the new drivers, better efficiency.
Making the mid and low range even more accessible is something AMD has always been king about, especially in the CPU department. Not only are their old GPU's getting heaps of more performance with their wine aged drivers (5700 XT 6700 XT 6800 XT) but their prices are consistently dropping nowadays, and their new cpu's being even more powerful and equally if not more affordable than the current last gen cpu's available. Intel has never done this in the modern day, and Nvidia GPU prices continue to rise.
In an age where computers are becoming more expensive and less friendly to consumers in pricing, AMD has been, and probably will always be the company who delivers to those who can't afford premium. This is what I love about AMD.
I would like to thank the GN crew. You're the only channel that just gives the straight news. I've seen multiple CZcams channels already trashing AMD based on the rumors not matching what AMD released. Its basic insanity.

Many B550 boards are upgraded X570 boards. It's a bit awkward to call one or the other top of the line as a result. For example I chose the B550-XE STRIX so I could have support for up to 5x PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs, Thunderbolt/USB 4, WiFi 6, and an Intel 2.5 Gigabit LAN. The Ethernet/WiFI eventually trickled down to a couple of newer X570 boards. The B550-XE STRIX is an updated X570 B550-E STRIX with the same VRM as the X570 Crosshair Dark Hero.
X570S is the Second-Gen X570 which is now the top of the line as they've been further updated.
@@aminy23I am running an ASUS X570 ROG Hero VIII
@@Spartan536 Which is consistent with my comment.
The ROG Crosshair VII Hero has dual network controllers with a Realtek 2.5 Gigabit LAN and Intel 1 Gigabit. This is a compromise choice of Intel quality OR 2.5 Gigabits speed, but not both. There's also no onboard Wi-Fi.
With B550 boards like the B550-F, B550-E, and B550-XE you can have dual network controllers with all the above simultaneously. You get Intel WiFi 6 and Intel 2.5 Gigabit. Later II versions of the board downgraded it to MediaTek WiFi.
Your board does not and cannot be upgraded to support Thunderbolt or USB 4.
With the B550-XE STRIX I get support for up to 5x PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSDs as it includes a riser, as well as a 6th at PCIe 3.0.
You get support for 3 PCIe 3.0 M.2s.
A big part of this was that X570 was rushed to market in 2019 to launch with Ryzen 3000. As a result it was expensive and produced lots of heat requiring a chipset fan.
B550 was delayed and came out 2020. As a result many motherboard manufacturers took X570 boards designs and updated them to use B550 along with other 2020 updates like WiFi 6, Intel 2.5 Gigabit LAN, Thunderbolt/USB 4 headers, etc.
X570 was supposed to be better, but newer is also better.
A motherboard is much like a car where many of the same components are shared, but others are swapped out to make variants.
A car could have cloth seats or leather, V6 or V8, cheap radio or premium sound, different colors, etc - but the same basic structure.
The Crosshair VIII Hero is known for having a good VRM with 16 stages that are each 60 Amps.
The Dark Hero upgraded it to 16 x 90 Amps which the B550-XE inherited.

Both Nvidia and AMD didn't announce consumer GPUs. Do i need to dissect that for you?
@@Mr.Genesis at this point they dont care about the gaming segment , they all going for the overhyped ai . whats the next hype word ? if you use chatgpt4 you can see its getting shit for a will. the future they want is still far away . the amount of money wasted on ai to find a solution for a problem we still dont have .
Graphics card makers are more than happy to sell GPU compute in bulk to companies who think they need massive machine learning rigs. Those companies make a lot more money for NVidia and even AMD to an extent, than consumer gamer's graphics card ever would.
Thanks Steve! (Sorry I couldn't resist...)
I do hope ye guys get into a deep dive regarding the business and consumer applications of NPUs along with objective measurement of NPUs. It seems to be a somewhat vague minefield performance metric wise at present based off of the info provided by the vendors et al.
Would be interesting to see how AMD, Intel, Qualcomm and Apple's NPUs all measure up against each other
Keep the good content coming GN!
Thanks, Steve! (and GN Crew!) Sounds like the weather is great over there today 😂 but I’m a Pluviophile, so I love rain anyway lol
It's the rainy season in northern Taiwan right now. That being said if they go south to gaoxiong or Kenting they will have lots of sunshine and beautiful beaches to visit.
you're not a "pluviophile" you just like rain. stop

Nice, looking forward to the benchmarks, but lets be honest, the 3D models will be the really interesting ones.
If there is no 3D in the name there is no point looking at them
So tired of hearing about AI that doesn't actually increase quality of life for normal humans.
Will be interesting when they release the X3D line up, want to see if they have the 3D cache on both chiplets.
Gotta say it does sound weird when you say nomenclature, but thanks for the cpus' headsup.
AM4: "I ain't heard no bell"
Hi Steve
10:44 I've seen VRM modules like these made by Monolithic Power Systems(though they didn't call them that)- Don't know if they're the same ones or another company's- But apparently they combine the mosfets, capacitors and inductors into one module, at least optionally in an LGA-72 socket. If something like this is brought over to consumer motherboards it could make them more customizable and repairable.
I'm really curious about the 880M and 890M iGPUs in the AI/mobile processors compared to the old 780M. I think Mini-PCs with mobile processors are the future of affordable gaming.
I think 7800x3d will be what I'll go with and be done with it.
Solid choice if you need a CPU right now. It will take a while for the 9XXX X3D CPU’s most likely.
@@Simon_Denmark yeah but the 9700x might match or beat the 7800x3d for possible less cost or slightly more.
@@Paultimate7 Yeah possibly but there’s no reviews yet.
@@Paultimate7 this was the case looking at the 5800x3d to 7800x due to a big bump in frequency and a decent IPC and memory gains and now it will be just a refresh. I just hope due to the lower TDP 9800x3d will clock 200mhz+ higher compared to previous gen
You will have enough power for at least 3 more years of high end gaming. After that just slot in the 10800x3d.
Ay another rain backdrop set
love your channel so much. one of the last real bastions of youtube honestly
What I like about AMD, and that is pretty stark IMO, they keep their word about the generations, a lot of people thought that AM4 was going to vanish not long after their keynote. And look, AM4 is still under us. For now, AM5 is compatible with their new CPUs, this gives consumers a trustworthy feeling. Be aware that upgrading a CPU without to change a motherboard is also a cost saving. Money you can spend on a better GPU or other parts. I hope they keep all their products kinda transparent.
hey steve, did you hear about the evga x670e classified engineering samples sold on xianyu?
Did not. Will ask around.

if there were ever a computer hardware hall of fame I would personally put my vote in for the AM4 platform. unreal longevity.
The lighting was actually really great
A 16 core CPU with a 5.7 GHz boost. I wonder what the folks at Intel who held us back at 4 cores and below 5 GHz for a decade think of this.
Money
@@ToTheGAMES or a coming lack there of for intel lol
You have been stuck at >340$ 8-cores since 2017.
The motherboards cost more than intel HEDT boards did back then aswell.
You aren't that much better off mate
Don't worry, AMD has already begun to think the way Intel thought. This is obviously the first time CPU TDP has actually decreased gen to gen but ramped up frequency, cache and added accelerators: AMD is just that good.
They switched places. AMD Used to be cheap CPUs with more cores but lacked the single thread performance to really excel in gaming like Intel did. Once AMD ditched their Global Foundries and switched to TSMC for Ryzen 3000 - then they improved drastically and ended up with premium chips. X3D gave them the gaming advantage as well.
Intel now makes cheaper CPUs and often have a workstation advantage which AMD CPUs with more cores used to have. A 12 core 12700KF and a 6 core Ryzen 7600 are both about the same price currently for example.
Now Intel has 24 core CPUs which can peak at 6.2 Ghz.
AMD is holding us back with $300 6 core CPUs. Now AMD is probably going to have to think twice about whether to price the 7600X at $299 or $200-$250.
