Spring 1942 1st Edition was my first Axis and Allies game. I haven't played it in a long time. Makes me want to pull it out again! Though Anniversary is a larger version of it I got recently. They fill similar niches but scratch different itches based on how meaty you want the game to be. Thanks for the rankings!
So the list is: 11. Spin-Offs 10. 41 9. Pacific (2001) 8. Classic (3rd Edition) 7. 42SE 6. Europe (2000) 5. Spring 42 4. 1914 (LHTR) 3. Revised 2. G40 1. AA50 The only huge difference between us is how we rank Spring 42, I guess. I was never able to get over how Spring 42 is just a reskinned Revised with inferior quality of the product (no paper money, painfully small game board, etc.). AA50 is definitely the definitive version of A&A though.
I only have the Anniversary edition so very pleased you gave it the number one position. I do enjoy it very much, though I mainly play it solo. I am very interested in the Global variant and intend to purchase that soon. Thanks for the video.
TheDiomedef16 The last couple of years I had to do solo after my brother got himself a girlfriend that took all his time and none for the game! Just recently I started playing other players over the CZcams channel and I'm having fun again with C-24/ SAM KENNY/HUNTER JONES plus others with the current global game right now!!!
Have you considered doing a play through or strategy guide for Europe and Pacific 2eds separately? There are a lot of global videos but I have yet to see videos of them played or talked about separately.
Al Mol i love 1914. I wish they would do a second :/. Shame. That being said, i have played 6 times with a group as the centrals, and haven't lost. While I do still agree the balance is severally against the centrals, it clearly isnt broke-broke, as with good strategy, a bit of luck, and a lot of stubborn play (not giving up when it looks bad) the centrals are capable of turning around. I have only played OOB rules, with 1 game having some very light house rules (not mine) added, rhat are generally accepted at tourni.
It has become quite clear I must get the anniversary edition as from both you and all other accounts I have seen it seems to be the best and definitive edition of the axis and allies series.I believe you can get this one in the stores currently too.
While I have not played A&A: Pacific (2001), but the expansive China with its own pieces and infantry production, the Burma Road, naval and air bases, the distance between Japan - Hawaii - USA, separate UK and Anzac forces. I dunno. The original Europe (1999) feels like a foray into scenario based games, where as Pacific feels like a proto Europe 1940.
I\ve heard from several players that battle of the bulge is actually quite fun to play once you give it a real chance, they say it is a nice twist with the supply lines and zones of controls, have you played it more then once or twice jonathan?
@@JonathanMeyer84 gotcha, apparenty it is worth the effort they say.Almost finished your tutorial series and I have a list of questions that will be soon forthcoming.
I wish Anniversary Edition had better trays for the pieces (more smaller compartments for separating ships, etc.). I ended up visiting the container store and found some slim tray organizers that fit perfect inside the box. Sometimes we have trouble distinguishing between the cruisers and destroyers. Each country’s units look different which adds to the fun. Great video.
I use the tackle boxes they use for fishing. Saves a ton of time in setup! I can setup the game in about 15-20 minutes compared to the hour it used to take me.
I use colour coding painted just at the aft for ships: Gold - Battleship Silver - Cruiser Copper - Destroyer White - Transport Much easier to get an overview when playing. The other two are fairly distinct. I also repainted Italy to a dark marine blue colour as they're imo to close to Russia in colour
Totally agree with those MEMOIR 44 like games being the very last in the bottom ranking+ that baby version 41 game as well! YG may disagree with you with the #1 rank, and if you get a brick thrown at your window in the middle of the night soon- you'll know exactly who did it!!!
YG is a good guy, but I'm sorry to say he is gravely mistaken on this one! I will not back down! I say all this jokingly of course. It's perfectly acceptable for two fans of the series to have different opinions on the best game.
As a beginning player, what are you referring to as balance? Is it the difference in military power? Its hard for me to realize balance when the game is based on real world implications. Just interesting.
When I refer to game balance, I mean the likelihood of either faction winning assuming equally skilled teams. A balanced game would render equally skilled opponents a roughly 50/50 chance of winning each. An unbalanced game would render a significant advantage to one side such that, all things considered, in a game of equally skilled players one side will win a disproportionate amount of the time.
@@JonathanMeyer84 thank you got the clarification. I guess I really need to get the Twins or the Anniversary edition. The wife and I played last night and she even pointed out things that didnt make sense with our 1941 version. Loving the game so far though.
I owned the original game master version by Milton Bradley. I loved it, and played a number of friends on it. Many years later, having gotten rid of most all my board games, I decided to make a return to them. I bought 1941 hoping to enjoy that nostalgic feel and joy of the game, but instead, was horrified at how the game was butchered from the original. I since purchased the Anniversary Edition, and I also have the Steam online, plus the digital edition of the original game (I think by Hasbro). Cheers to all who play these games, even 1941
Where would Axis and Allies and Zombies fit in? or the PC Hasbro game, which was buggy and crash-happy, but allowed a lot of customization of the rules, item strengths / costs, etc.
Minor point: The idea of contested territories in 1914 actually goes into another axis and Allies game nowadays in some form… Zombies…. That is all;)...

Its a shame they wont do a 1914 more balanced... it was so easy to do...

If Spring 1942 had weapons development, I think it would be shot straight to the top 3
Research is a very poorly implemented mechanic and can completely unhinge the balance of a game.

Probably either just ahead of or just behind Classic.

Touche. Though to be fair, I believe that game didn't release widely until later in 2018 after this video went live.
what about the minis
