    Nice history. I didn't know about the 1981 version. I have the Milton Bradly 1984 version from when I was a teenager. My version had the German soldiers in green, and US soldiers in grey. I didn't realize it was a production error until another Axis & Allies player, who had the correct set, pointed it out to me. I always wondered which production run had that mistake.

    Nice recap of all the games, enjoyed it.
    The mapboard for Revised is my all-time favorite. It appears to be inspired after antique maps and globes. They used to use black for oceans and bright colors. Very practical. Notice the compass headings and longitude/latitude lines in the background.

    Maybe I'm simply ignorant of the glories of the more complex A&A games, but for $30 I think 1941 is a superb intro to the franchise - I'm speaking as a fairly casual boardgamer (who appreciates a little strategic depth) who wants something a little more complicated than Risk (and less dice dependant!).
    I actually have the 1999 Europe one as well but it was a bit tricky for my Dad to get the hang of it and we lost a little bit of interest.

    I would love to see a video that talks more about gameplay for all these versions and what bids are needed to make them balanced. I don’t play my old A&A Pacific anymore because the same side always seems to win.

    • @BoardGameNation
      @BoardGameNation  Před 6 měsíci +2

      I have found the amount of the bids for a particular game is a situational decision. Some people say that the Allies always win while other will say it is the Axis. That might have less to do with the game itself and more to do with the different skills that are required to be successful playing each side. Meaning, I don't think there is an 'optimal' bid to balance a game. It is about the players at the table, which is how it should be.

    I joined the army in 1982 and left the game behind and I have no idea what happened to it.

    Thank you for making these videos, it is so much fun to watch. I bought AA revised almost 20 years ago as a student, played it with friends for some time (time needed for this game was always an issue) but we always had some problems understanding specifics so the game slowly faded away. CZcams was just getting started back then so I didn't bother finding out anything else beyond the rule book.
    Fast forward to today and I have two kids that are really fond of Monopoly and Risk and a few days ago I decided to bring out the big guns : Axis and Allies. I've reread the rules, watched a few of your videos for clarification (still a bit unsure about transportation of units over water) and now this is where the party is at. It's an exciting game once you get a hang of it and it keeps my imagination going unlike most other board games where you have to follow a certain recipe to win and than just go through the motions for an hour or two.
    Keep it up and thanks again for sharing your excitement and passion.

    When my best friend and I play a long game including Axis and Allies, we play it in parts. So after four or five hours of play we decide to stop, I'll then take snapshots with my phone or tablet of the board up and down each section as well it's pieces, money and the track recorder. I then put the game away and when we plan to continue that game at a later time. The day we plan I'll set it up as the snapshots show. You must have good lighting for this and focused angles so you can count the chips. He introduced this method in a game him and his brother played.

    1:00:58 That error comes from A&A Revised Edition (2004). In this Revised Edition, there are 12 victory cities. I think when they made this 1942 second edition version, they just made a copy-paste of the Rule Book of the Revised Edition.

      @@CBs_Bill_from_Montana I've found that the biggest risk playing while drinking (alcohol), especially with the anniversary edition which is my personal favorite but has such a large board, is to the pieces rather than the boards. There is such limited real estate after the mapboard on any table that I own that it's not uncommon for at least one nation's box to find it's way to the floor.

Its the 1942 version but big enough for everyone and all their pcs. Then I bought a piece of craft paper that big and I traced the landmasses. I added all the sea zones, hand colored it all with pencil crayons lul and turned the game into the unofficial 1939 version of A&A. Basically I made a better and much bigger colored map. It was from Zeno Games in Jacksonville Florida and its called 'The World at War 1939-1945'. I even bought a number of metal pieces to represent it's special units. Great memories from a great game.

    D-Day & Bulge were at the time where AH were eager to spread out and mercantilise the franchise but I think they did it in the wrong direction. Playing DDay put me off buying Bulge and Guadalcanal.
    A better idea (IMHO) would've been to explore other eras.
    Pact vs NATO 1986
    Napoleon's Europe
    Modern Global War
    Ancient World
    Wars of Phyrus
    Shogun*
    The Great War*
    The Hundred Years War
    Battle for Mars
    Alien Invasion on the Far Frontier.
    Goal based games like Bulge and DDay: Eastern Front, Nordic Front, Eastern Mediterranean Front, Siciliy and WMed Front, Western Front and Sea Lion, Fortress Amerika, China Front, Burma, Assault on the Pacific US.
    *These two obviously have similar entries in the franchise.
    I have Zombies although I don't know why and I can only assume it was made to get rid of old pieces.

It introduced half battleships, sub pens, China & France, special units (mechanized, home guards, SS, kamikazes, etc) . It also included a new map and new pieces. Well, Ukraine is a MUST WIN. By win I mean either reduce or actually take. Yes, I said take. This latter outcome is preferable to a really bad roll which does not reduce the Ukraine stack then a retreat. Just yesterday, I got a streak of really bad dice. I goofed, retreated and got into an unrecoverable situation. The Ukraine attack had me (Russia) scoring ZERO hits and the Germans scoring 2 in round 1. I retreated. The West Russia attack was again bad dice. I won, but I lost 6 units doing it. This ended up with West Russia and Caucasus falling on turn 1. West Russia falls again and this time unrecoverably in turn 2. This all happened because ALL the units in Ukraine survived. It would be better to lose all the Russian tanks but take out the Germans in Ukraine because that will prevent the fall of west Russia and it will actually make it hard for Germany to take Egypt.

      @BoardGameNation  Před 2 lety

      That is a good question and it sounds like you have already done a lot of research. In short, I would say it depends on your comfort level with complexity and your preferred length of play. Once you are comfortable with the rules 1942.2 can be set up and played in 3 - 5 hours. AA50 is more like 6 - 8 hours. Also, if you are wanting to be able to play online, the most popular version being played is Axis & Allies Online by Beamdog (available through Steam). That may or may not be a consideration for you, but playing online allows for a lot more games to be played and give you the chance to test out a variety of strategies before you go to war on the tabletop with your local friends.

      @@BoardGameNation one last question. Would you find it reasonable to house rule 1942 by including the research and national objective features from anniversary or do you think because of the difference between the two there would be a balancing problem? The balancing is a concern because of the difference in how many ipc's are shown on the board that a player can collect. 1942 has a total of 90 while anniversary only has 72 I believe. As far as the national objectives go, I can't include italy in 1942 and there is also the issue of whether or not all the territories from the national objectives are in 1942 in the first place. I was also thinking of swapping out the battle strip with anniversary's battle board if I went with 1942. Anniversary is very expensive and hard to find compared to 1942

We have been focusing on getting some casual game content out (unboxing and how to play for Azul, plus a complete how to play for Root) and we have been working closely with the Nightingale Games team and Larry Harris on the Kickstarter for War Room 2.0.
      We haven't forgotten and I am still testing the strategy and triple checking my math.

      On the table version, I love that play! However, one of the few differences between the TTG and the online version is that fighters cannot land on friendly carriers (or use transports) online. This creates a different mix of options and frankly helps the Axis in the Atlantic race.
