      So from what I gathered you can buy 1940 Europe and Pacific and combine them? Do the rules to do that come in both boxes or is it a separate ruleset? We played a lot of A&A back in the day and you have peaked my interest heh.

    • @BoardGameNation
      @BoardGameNation  Před 6 měsíci +3

      Glad to hear it!
      That's right. 1940 Europe and Pacific were designed to be played separately or as one massive game called "Global." The rules for that variant are printed in both rulebooks.
      Let me know if you have any more questions! Have fun! Thanks for watching!

    It looks like we're truly in the golden age of Axis & Allies but it appears that I've outgrown my phase of playing boardgames seriously. I'm still really into the WW2 history. If only these games were available when I was a teenager, I would actually have the time to play them.
    Thanks for this amazing channel. It's so nostalgic yet new for me to see these new versions of the game that I played so much back in the day.
    I still think that all Axis and Allies games could be improved with using a 10 sided die but it looks like the game designers never considered changing the type of dice. A six sided die is limited in terms of probability. In every other aspect like new units, better rules, territories, and more balanced gameplay, they killed it, but the dice never changed.

    Regarding the older maps you mention, it was indeed observed in some cases that even-digit numbers were not circled, while double-digit numbers were circled. This was seen in all the second editions of 1942 and 1940. Then this was changed and there are older maps with all the numbers inside a circle, as in the current reprints.

    I’ve been playing Axis & Allie’s for 35 years. I have over 40 official Axis & Allie’s games and I haven’t been this excited for an Axis & Allie’s publisher ever.
    You can tell that Renegade games really cares about this franchise.
    I’m now going to purchase all these updated versions although I’ll might never play them.
    I know you weren’t trying to do a commercial for them but I’m ordering 3 more games from them today!
    Updated rule books mean a lot. I wish they just sold those separately but I doubt there’s a market for it.

      @@BoardGameNation Thanks for the quick reply.
      I was fortunate enough to buy the A&A 50th Ed when it first came to Australia (and boy did it disappear fast). Always been my favourite edition. A long game but as I said no where near as long a WiF FE (which could take a month, or more, with seven players and all the add ons). Great to discover your channel and looking forward to watching you World Final bout. Oh and thank you for the British/American Strategy to take down Japan so quickly. I've been a Germany first player (as UK/USA) for so long I never really put much thought into a Japan first strat. So effective. Again thank you.

    One (possibly critical) difference that I just noticed is that the plastic for the new Renegade editions is slightly softer than previous editions. I only noticed this as I'm going to paint (or get painted) the pieces in my 1942 2nd edition set. This shouldn't affect or concern most players, but I flexed the soldier figures a bit to see how they might resist paint flaking off, and the soldiers in the Renegade set were noticeably more flexible than the older Hasbro version. Again, this shouldn't affect most people as the pieces aren't going to fall apart or anything, but if you're a gamer who is thinking about painting your figures, I would recommend using the pieces from the older set as I am, just to be on the safe side. Other than that minor inconvenience to a small group of gamers, I really appreciate the love that Renegade is putting into their prints, good job guys.

    • @BoardGameNation
      @BoardGameNation  Před 2 měsíci

      That's interesting. Thanks for sharing. I'm curious if that might have anything to do with the age of the plastic. Do you think it might harden over time?

    • @hankadelicflash
      @hankadelicflash Před 2 měsíci

      @@BoardGameNation Good question. I can't say for certain, but my "fancy" studio-art degree, and life experience, has shown me that, for the most part, plastic gets more brittle over time, does it get "harder", THEN more brittle? I don't know, but now that you make me think about it, I suppose that could, and probably does, happen. I mean, just from everyday experience, we've probably all dealt with supple new plastic in a new car, and old, brittle stuff, in an old beater, but something's telling me that they used a different plastic on the Renegade sets, my "old" set isn't THAT old, and has sat in a dark closet this whole time, also, the tiny numbers on the bottom of the soldiers are different for each set if that's worth anything.
      I mean, it's not a huge difference, like 10-20% more flexible at the ankles if I tried to quantify it, yeah, I suppose that could come with time as a set ages, I'd be curious what you might notice in your sets.

    @Shannon Merritt and those who collect variants of the different A&A-games. I know you're out there: When Milton Bradley went from printing the game in Hong Kong to somewhere in China, the first print that got shipped out had some games with mixed colours of the units. The Germans that normally had their beautiful field grey colours (yes, still miss having those colours on the Germans) got the colours of the USA and the USA-units was field grey. THAT was confusing when you one day played your Hong Kong-copy and the next week went over to a friend that had the China-version.

    Generals of Waterloo was a huge roll out map the size of a banquet table made for all the pieces of the (then) new Hasbro Axis and Allies expansion pieces. The rules included new levels of detail including moving board pieces by rail, targeting railroad infrastructure, & (believe it or not) rolling for the severity of winter weather each year effecting movement ability of pieces. You can Google it & it will give the rules in detail, but the map is a sight. I never was able to corral my gaming buddies to play what's basically A&A on steroids LoL

    Yes, I am one of those filthy, disgusting heathens who loves, and still plays, Axis & Allies Revised (or as I still call it - "The Blue Box"). I'm honestly bummed no one has reprinted that game and map. The rules were great (only change is adding the Breakthrough tokens from Anniversary to make Advancements easier) and the stark contrast of colors on the map was such a help for many sight issues, despite nay-sayers calling it ugly.

    Great video, I have been playing A&A since the game master version and love it. I only recently learned of Renege Games taking over. Sounds like good news to me. The only Version I missed is the Guadalcanal version so I will get that reprint. I will look forward to the North Africa one as well. As to the comment of having every version, have you ever heard of Xeno games? They made several expansions which are more like prototypes for 1940. The minis they put out weren't that good, but they were useable. I believe that they were the first to add the French, to include Vichy, and cruiser units as well as BBs taking 2 hits. Going back a few years but I think they may have been out of Jacksonville Florida.

    Thanks for doing this! I'm partway through and just wanted to note before I forget that the color variation you are seeing in the 1942 map vs. the Hasbro 2012 printing could just be standard variation within a print run. I've been on many press checks in my career as a graphic designer, and have seen some big shifts from what I've approved on press to what has been delivered to the customer. In isolation, no one would really notice, but side-by-side it's very apparent. Magenta is heavier in the Hasbro one and black looks a little light, FWIW. :)

    Would you guys mind if I chime in once again? One thing I can't seem to get a solid answer on, is, are you limited by the number of plastic pieces that come with the game(s)? I don't mean the number of colored chips, but if, say, Russia only comes with two bomber pieces would they be allowed to make three bomber "formations" to go off into three different directions or are they limited by the two bomber pieces that came with the game?
    I've read manuals and searched the net, and, if I find anything at all, I'm finding conflicting information. If my memory serves me right now, I believe the new Renegade rules (that are supposed to include errata, and what-not, from over the years) say that you are NOT limited at all and that you can just use pieces of paper or whatever to make new stacks, but then I downloaded said errata that say you ARE limited by the number of pieces that come with the game. If you guys have a second, could you possibly clear this up?
    I always figured the different amount of pieces was meant to simulate what each county was capable of producing during the war, but now that I'm reading (in some places) that a country's production isn't limited by the amount of pieces that come with the game, that maybe the different amount of pieces for each country are just a factor of how most A&A games play out and countries that hardly use a certain type of weapon only get a couple of those in order to save money on printing the game. When I CAN get my friends together to play, I've always limited countries by the number of pieces (again, not chips) that each country comes with, as that made sense to me, but maybe many years of play-testing has determined that no limitations are better. What do you think? Also, is limiting/non-limiting possibly unique to each version of Axis and Allies as well?

    • @BoardGameNation
      @BoardGameNation  Před měsícem +1

      I seem to remember something about this in the original game, but in all the modern games you are not limited by the number of actual minis that come with the game. If you run out, use some other kind of marker.

    I critiqued this game video to death and CZcams screwed me in trying to post it and I am not about to rewatch it all over again to replicate it. Let is suffice to say that NOVA Game Design was the original version in 1981 and Milton Bradley bought them out and did not print their original version until 1984. All of these newer versions are just pretenders. Also, Larry Harris's real name is Lawrence H. Harris.
    The new AA gun rule as written @59:20 is still wrong, it should never be an automatic kill for ANY solo air unit attacking a solo AA gun even if the AA gun misses on the 1st round. The combat should have to continue in rounds until one side kills the other. Whoever wrote this "new" rule explanation is an idiot.
    I believe there are also new D-Day, Guadalcanal Canal & Battle of the Bulge versions of this A&A game system which were not covered.
    And for the bearded wonder, you still don't own the Axis & Allies Custom map made by XENO Games which was the first to include France & China as separate nations nor do you own the Deluxe version of A&A or the expansion that was printed by XENO games nor do you own the XENO games World at War series 1-4 editions. 1914 is great for beginners as the combat isnt too intricate. It represents an entirely different way to play the game and that is honestly why i love it so much. It is less about getting lucky with certain dice rolls and more about having good strategy and insights

      This video wasn't designed to go through the entire A&A franchise. This video was focused exclusively on the versions that Renegade Game Studios has taken over the production of. We do have a video our channel marking the 40 year anniversary of the franchise that does walk through every version of A&A starting with the Nova Games version in 1981 and ending with Zombies. You can find that on our channel.
