  • If you are looking for a FUN and CHALLENGING art project with stuff you probably already have at home than look no further! I have been doing this project with sculpture and painting students for over 10 years and it never fails to yield amazing results. But pay close attention to warnings throughout the video about common mistakes so you can anticipate the "speed bumps" that are likely to surface as you work.
    Student made all the examples I show throughout the video (aren't they soo cool)! Steak dinner, pretzel, ice cream and more! If you have ever made a spit wad then you know the basics of this process! Its no wonder so many of my high school students love this project! I will show you step by step how I made this realistic toilet paper sculpture while also sharing many "what NOT to do" tips as I go along.
    Wet the toilet paper, shape it, let it dry then paint it.
    Let's make some bacon! And egg, and toast! Use toilet paper and water
    Materials (I used and recommend)
    Cottonell toilet paper (do NOT use lotion infused paper, it won't work…just gets slimy yuck)
    Water in a spray bottle
    Glossy mod-lodge
    acrylic paint (any acrylic should work)

    Art History to study
    Andy Warhol, Jasper johns And Wayne Thiebaud
    Pop art movement of the 1960s
    Symbolism of food throughout art history
    If you are using my channel to supplement your homeschooling work this project is a winner!
    It doesn't HAVE to be food but food is universal and I know my students want it to "look right" so we have done it this way most often but you could create almost anything.
    Possible Cross-curricular connections
    Social studies: challenge students to research a foreign culture and build a typical meal, staple food, export or traditional meal from that time period and culture.
    Math: ratios of paint when mixing, students are challenged to document their colors for each food with recipes of how much colors were used.
    Health and nutrition: link this project to eating, nutrition and health, create a healthful meal.
    Art Drawing: complete the sculpture and use it for the subject of a still life (draw or paint) creating the full artistic "circle of life"

    Thank you to my creator who has given me all talent and ability! Praying it brings others joy and continues to point to Jesus! The ultimate artist is God Almighty.

      Thank you for the comment! Middle school?! Wow you are brave! I had not thought of using it for that but it would be a perfect way to get a cheap prop and have the students make it would a great way to enrich as they pre pare for there performance! Love it!

    This art project blessed my heart! Thank you for this realistic art!! Question how long does it last? Like how durable is it? Will it hold for months or years or come apart? Thank you for this art!!

    • @day.nightstudio
      @day.nightstudio  Před 5 měsíci

      Thank you! So kind of you to say! If they are sealed with the mod podge they have lasted me 10+ years. The bowl of ice cream I show in the video is older than ten years. If someone wanted to destroy them they could but if they are handled with care they should hold up well. My students pass the examples around and they last year after year

    Houston loves these!!! New sub!! My immediate thought was for my lil nieces 4 &8 to add to their kitchen pots and pans but how would I make them hard? Or maybe wrap in cellophane and shrink with heat gun? Any ideas.

    • @day.nightstudio
      @day.nightstudio  Před 9 měsíci

      Oh good! Thank you for subscribing! The high gloss mod podge makes them fairly “tough” but I suppose you could add something even more durable (as long as the kiddos don’t accidentally lick or try eating them) 😬 the ice cream in my video is 10 years old

      I’ve never tried a heat gun and shrink wrap but it sounds like it could work well. Let me know if you have any luck with it! 😊
