10:13 You're absolutely right that is exactly what Peele is doing, he is focused mostly on giving a social commentary but it worked nicely here for me, it never felt heavy-handed like in many movies today. Also i loved the whole Close Encounters inspired feel of this film. What i find quite frustrating is most people seem to be overlooking the very original approach to the UFO antagonist in NOPE.

You're completely on the money with this review. Structurally, this is two acts worth of a great film. It falls apart a bit in the third act for me as well. I too wanted more connection with the characters. It is a beautifully shot film though. The sound design is amazing. The performances are terrific. I think Peele captures the themes and the feelings he wanted to convey exceptionally well... I'd just love to see him produce a tighter story while doing that.

Great review! The movie was definitely astounding on a technical level though I think it could’ve better on a story level. I do think he could have streamlined this script and even done a second or third pass to narrow down a few plot holes and strengthen the cohesivenesses of the story even more. But he really is a director to watch. Can’t wait for his next movie!

Jordan Peele have done a great job of building tension in all of his three films, but none of those really pay off in the third act. Get Out suffers less because it closed up quickly.
I don't know how to express this properly, but sometimes you just know that in certain movie the main characters are not going to die (at least not right at the end). I felt it in US and Nope especially the later.

I like the ufo subject and I like Jordan Peele's style of directing so I was very intrigued when I saw the trailer. After watching it yesterday I wasn't disappointed. Very thought provoking (to be expected) and visually striking. I knew it wasn't going to be some generic alien invasion movie. I love the way Peele puts those subtle parallels in his movies where you might not pick up on them straight away but you will after giving it more thought. Like at the end where the girl releases that big inflatable into the air and the sky monster tries to eat it. It's a parallel to the chimp on the set of the sitcom popping those balloons. I just made that connection now as I was writing this I swear. I'm looking forward to watching it again and I hardly ever watch movies more than once

the climax and alien in this movie didn't really justify the runtime in my opinion. Sure everybody is saying it is a spectacle, but there's probably 1:30 hours of people just talking and planning for the alien. The pacing didn't feel like it was leading up to anything THAT amazing. Also nobody felt like a main character, all I saw was like 5 side characters doing their own barely fleshed out stories.
Idk maybe im just a hater, but I was pretty deflated after watching this.

@@Manicpanic457 I love US the way I love something like THE EMPTY MAN or the Fulci cosmic horror of the 80s.
The exposition makes no sense and therefore props up the gonzo nature of all of it.
The exposition is as much about disorienting you as it about explaining anything. It still makes no sense how there are endless tethered in endless underground tunnels that survive on rabbit only.
It doesn’t matter. None of it makes sense. It’s all metaphor and larger cosmic weirdness.
If you watch THE EMPTY MAN, there’s a scene where they “explain” everything and it just makes the movie that much more baffling and insane. And it’s awesome.

Even the way it’s shot when Red is telling her story is very throwback-y and off-putting.

His previous efforts have been narratively ambitious, though their plot/character contrivances and motivating forces hold back the many themes and social statements he ultimately wants to drive home. Peele, like Shyamalan, will hit the mark when the suspense and central thrust of the narrative is so engrossing that you can't even step back and consider its flaws until later on. And by then, you don't really care. Nope's script was just too messy for me. Still, you could certainly do worse than buying a ticket to this one - especially with a lot of the crap being churned out today.

"Close Encounters of the Third Kind" remains *the* movie that uses aliens as a metaphor for making a movie. Once you understand that the ending has Francois Truffaut directing lights, sounds and cameras you have the key to decode the rest of the movie. Two examples: the obsession to get something "right" and the door that opens in your mind when you find the solution; and the three characters who escape at the end: one doesn't have the strength to reach the top and one chooses family first. Only the character who commits himself totally completes the journey.
"Close Encounters" is full of these moments: self doubt... "seeing" something that you can't really explain to others, only show... CEotTK is a movie about fulfilling a creative endeavour more than other movies openly about creativity.

Not sure that Roy Neary's character arc is supposed to be admired as an act of commitment. Spielberg had no kids when he made it; when he later re-inserted deleted scenes in the Special Edition release, Spielberg had become a father himself and some of the added scenes deal with Neary dismantling his family life further and alienating his wife. To me, Close Encounters is (also) a study of obsession.

I think the main idea in the movie was pretty neat and technically very impressive. One big thing what I missed was tension. I never really felt tension that when the alien, which yet again was a really cool idea, catches one of the characters. But yeah, for me it was kind of 6,5or7/10 movie that I watch and forget.

First off, I totally agree about the Gordy flashback scene: it was my absolute favorite! Secondly, I absolutely agree that Jordan Peele is a master of exploring social commentary without a doubt but he struggles when tackling interpersonal relationships and deep character dives. That being said, I'm not sure if this is a flaw or if he intentionally does this because it's just not his vision. In any case, it would be nice to see a more character driven story from him because clearly he is a deeply intuitive filmmaker who thinks every second out in great detail. The thing about this film is that while I was watching it, I wasn't overly impressed but afterwards I couldn't stop thinking about it. The same thing happened for me with Us: initially I was slightly disappointed but then I saw it again and my entire perspective changed. Both Us and Nope seem to be films that are intentionally created to be better after subsequent watches. I think this is brilliant from a viewers perspective as well as from Peele's as he knows he's going to get people back into the theater to watch it again. And this furthermore plays on the idea of spectacle and how we as an audience just can't get enough. I have always maintained that Get Out is my favorite of his films but the more I think about it, it IS incredibly straightforward and I like that now Peele is free to explore a more contemplative format. Finally, in the end, I love that Nope has that big, bold summer blockbuster feel to it! Not only does it have layers upon layers of easter eggs, movie/music/pop culture references and social commentary: it has that vibe of the summer blockbuster that seems so difficult to effectively achieve these days. My thoughts overall: throw me down the rabbit hole and show it to me again! Best movie of the summer and I can't wait to see what Jordan Peele brings next!

Good review, but I think you didn't delve into the social commentary as much as I thought you would. You did mention a lot of the meaning on a just under the surface level, but that was it. People focusing more on their phones than what they see right in front of them? Check? You speaking about the sightly deeper commentary regarding the respect of nature, animals and things you can't control... not so much. There's a lot of layers to the this movie, but I feel that you only peeled back at the surface, and perhaps the outer layer. Anyways, good job - I subbed!

It's an UFO and the aliens are the draw, we get a flying kite going after a balloon to destroy the UFO with no usuals regarding UFO phenomenona. Once it went to a flying kite, it became silly and it didn't act like a normal UFO, it acted like a dumb animal.

I LOVE your reviews so in depth... I was wondering if you have seen 2018's The Nightingale directed by Jennifer Kent (The Babadook)? IMHO It is about a mother in colonial Tasmania out to find the English Officer that killed her family and raped her with the help of an aboriginal guide.. It is one the most visceral, poignant, disturbing, and downright beautiful films I have ever seen. I would love to hear your take on it.

To me, yeah, it was about escapism, but...what about...escapism? It coulsnt have been about the general subject of escapism because a lot of escapism has nothing wrong with it. And it could be about a sort of ravenous escapism since those audiences in the movie got their kicks out ofcontrolling creatures to their will. But do we do that a lot in real life? Its really subtle, but i think if you know what youre looking at, the movie may have a much deeper message, but i cant be sure. its just a feeling.

I havent seen it yet but i think Peele is definitely overated as an artist and director. I didnt care much for Us and i enjoyed Get Out. I think Robert Eggers is a much better example of our new generation of thriller/horror filmakers that can create something compelling and follow through with saying something even though you may not like or agree with what that is.

Couldn't agree more, Mike. "The Lighthouse" was one of the best films of the last 20 years. As for Peele, I found "Nope" dead boring and pointless. He reminds me of M. Night Shyamalian. All top-hat, no rabbit.

    "Expecting creativity"... so...his alien take wasn't creative?....mmmk
Jordan actually said he allows the actors to flesh out the characters' backstories (alone and with him), it helps develop their version of the character in their image, but I'm hearing a lot of people say the want MORE of each character probably due to these same reasons. If the actors are great, we want to see more. However, Peele also admitted that there was a LOT in the movie, and that this was a LOT of movie. He said his original cut was nearly 4 hours, "maybe longer", so my guess, is that's some of the MORE people would've appreciated. (another quick note, was the fact that they were shooting as the COVID scare was lessening, and a lot of consideration was taken irt actors being together in large groups or for longer periods of time. Most scenes outside of the family members, were either outdoors or had the actors spaced apart. Either way, I loved it! But it took a minute (OK, a day) to really digest what I'd seen, and really think about/appreciate the innovation, the character archs, and the social commentary. Not everyone's cup of tea, but any movie that keeps you thinking about it for 24hrs isn't one you easily forget.
    👍👍

i think this film had some great ideas, but ultimately felt really slow and un-eventful until you got to the end. maybe im just dumb, but i also feel like a lot of the scenes that were in there didn't really add anything to the story and just felt pointless and taking up precious time.
