Movies like Hereditary and Midsommar scare me most as the human element seems haunting in real life. Cults and social coercion are real and can be terrifying. As a child the scene in Edward Scissor hands where everyone goes to work at the same time still haunts me. The idea that so many people could pretend to be happy in a world with zero variation or individuality is the scariest thing of all.

Same. The show I attended was a themed preview screening: all houselights off, only the ushers had flashlights, dead leaves and twigs were scattered around everywhere. The theatre was cold, too - we had been warned to dress warm. I don't know if the cheap showmanship added to the atmosphere, but as the movie played out, the dread in that cinema was palpable. The tent scene halfway through scared the siht out of me like few other movies have.

I think that the final reveal in Don't Look Now (1973) is singularly terrifying. It's an image I could never shake. The original version of The Vanishing (1988) also reigns supreme. It's a whole other level of thriller, one of the great films that makes day more frightening than night.

@@NeverTakeNoShortcuts I feel the same way - The Vanishing is such a mesmerising experience from beginning to end and the final faustian bargain is one of the most existentially terrifying experiences I can remember having with a film - just as with Don’t Look Now’s ending. The only other films that have affected me in such a way might be Possession, Pulse and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with me (the face of killer Bob still gives me shivers - the film may well be Lynch’s darkest work). The Exorcist really shook me to the core - but it left me quite distressed and in a rather unpleasant state of rumination (on religious ideas that as an atheist, I struggle to articulate) more than disturbed or terrified.

Halloween 1978. Scary to me because (until the ending) it's eerily plausible - escaped maniac casing a neighborhood - a California neighborhood very similar to the one where I grew up - the scene where Michael lurks behind a hedge/bush as Laurie & Annie walk home - my streets were lined with identical ones! The music is amazing, and the actors are believable as annoying teenagers. And the character of Michael Myers (The Shape) just gets me every time. My 2 cents, of course. Love this channel!

I had a scary theater experience once that didn't even involve a scary movie. I was watching a big-budget action movie back in 2010, and right in the middle of a big vehicle explosion scene, a pretty strong earthquake hit, and the whole theatre shook. A recent one for me is the Danish film Speak No Evil.
A common complaint with horror movies is that characters make stupid and bad decisions. That certainly happens in Speak No Evil but the film does a good job of creating a situation where the red flags are noticeable but also slight enough that it makes the main characters' bad decisions seem fairly realistic, which makes the very dark ending all the more upsetting. And the real kicker is that I, in my heart of hearts, know that if I was in that same situation I would totally make all those same decisions and that realization really f*cks me up.

The Thing begins with a question mark and ends with a question mark. I think we could have done without the spaceship opening as the origin of the Thing is revealed fairly quickly in the film. Also, during this time in cinema, directors and casting people were more concerned with actors who were interesting and who could actually ACT. The actors cover a variety of ages, unlike the 2011 version, where everyone is fit and young and unremarkable. As far as SMILE is concerned, you should check out a film called MR. SARDONICUS (1961), where a man seeks the help of a physician to cure him of a ghastly frozen smiling expression.

It goes to Eraserhead for me.
I’ve come to realize my initial visceral reaction to that one isn’t something I’ll ever feel as strongly ever again, it all had to do with where I was in life when I watched it.
I will never forget how unshakable the mood was after it wrapped, caught it late at night at that and it certainly melded with the atmosphere.
I was in a dwindling relationship at the time of viewing, one in where we practiced unprotected sex, needless to say- I no longer treat sex so carelessly, I couldn’t imagine reluctantly finding myself in the shoes of Henry Spencer.
As for the original Funny Games- I agree with you wholeheartedly.
Prefer the first more than anything, loved it’s touch of realism.
Funny Games has a bit of that Texas Chainsaw affect in that I always remembered Haneke showing *THAT* moment on camera.
I went back recently and couldn’t believe it happened off camera as the intruder meanders into their kitchen for a mid-crime snack.
I find it more effective that way of course, to leave that visual up to you- it’s as if the movie says, “Oh? You- you wanted to see what just happened? Yeah, whatever. That just happened. Deal with it.”

the last movie that really scared me was fire walk w/ me abt 22ish years ago. something about how much of it took place during the daytime/afternoon and the fact that i hadnt seen twin peaks really deeply disturbed me.

I'd seen a handful of Twin Peaks episodes when, as a teenager, I stumbled upon Fire Walk With Me late one night. I've still never been more frightened by another movie since. Each time I see it, it's a different scene or detail that will terrify me, and the film's overall impact gets consistently more and more tragic.

There's a creature feature from Thailand that I'm very excited for once it's released in the states. THE LAKE. It's trailer is very reminiscent of The Host or the original Jurassic Park. Mostly practical special effects and naturalistic cinematic visual style. The exact opposite of the brightened, overly lit, CG soulless hell that is Jurassic World etc, and 90% of commercial franchise movies. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has seen or knows more about The Lake (Thailand 2022).

There are few "horror/thriller" movies which I find truly scary, although recently Smile is undoubtedly a "scary" experience and fairly well done. Though I'm never as interested in that as I am with an experience of dread and unsettling tension, even disturbing whether psychological or visceral. I very recently watched Kiyoshi Kurosawa's CURE for the first time as the new Criterion Collection bluray was released and that type of slow burn creepy psychological horror always is more interesting and sticks with me on a deeper level. Similar to The Wailing or Memories of Murder. Allowing the viewer to lean in and participate more in putting together the important details of the narrative and forcing an active focus or attention to detail is much more rewarding. Possession. Inland Empire. The Vanishing. Bedeviled. Hereditary. The first act in the recent Barbarian is nearly perfect, though the third act & finale really annoyed me, it's worth seeing if only for the first 30 minutes or so.

A few months ago I ate some shrooms. They weren't very strong because they lost some potency. Then I was watching that movie 'the wind'. The shrooms made me really immersed in the eerie atmosphere of the movie and there's a jump scare scene that really caught me off guard. Almost had a heart attack.

Still need to see Smile and Possession. I don't get frightened generally but there are movies that disturb me enough that I can't shake the thought of them. Sisters, Onibaba, Smooth Talk, At Close Range, Rosemary's Baby, and Interiors are examples. Some of them aren't even horror.

Jordan Peele managed to succeed on scaring me a little bit in two scenes of NOPE: *Spoilers*
The Gordy scene. Simply because animals are real. The simple fact that you are at the mercy of a creature who doesn’t follow a law or moral code, doesn’t fear consequences and acts by pure instinct and that instinct can be destructive. It’s the feeling of finding a loose pitbull in your neighborhood.
The other one was the stable scene where Daniel Kaluyaa sees something in the dark that could or could not be a face, until it starts moving. It has happened to me: walking in a dark alley or in the woods and suddenly watching something that looks like a face watching you and you’re not entirely sure if it is.
