Definitely give Neverending Story a watch. There's something so dark and upsetting about the tone of many scenes in that film. Many moments of it were burned into my mind forever when I watched it as a kid. Don't be deterred by its status as a kiddie movie or the garbage sequels. It's quite a respectable and imaginative fantasy film.

Could you review a Rainer Werner Fassbinder movie. He really deserve this. He made more than 43 films in 14 years time, about all the human condition subjects, in it’s own orginal and beautiful style. Rainer Werner Fassbinder should be on your videolist, next to Kubrick, Lynch, Antonioni, Bergman, Haneke, Buñuel, Polanski and other important filmdirectors.

I don't know any better than that part II is a solid fan favorite 🙂
Part II is really great, from indeed all the visual details, to the time travel plot (the future, alternate time line of the present, going back into the events of the first movie), to the (political) satire (which is at least as topical as it was back then, with Biff being inspired by Trump etc.)

LOTR came out when I was in middle-school. I was transfixed. I read the books, and went so far as to watch Return of the King four times in theaters (and twice in one day on the opening weekend).
I've outgrown my more obsessive love for LOTR borne out of young teenage exuberance for fantasy, sword-fighting, wizards, epic battles, etc., but I find my admiration and enjoyment of the films has not actually diminished -- merely that what I admire and enjoy most has changed.
Now, I have more appreciation for the level of craft and sheer scale of the production. It's a feat the films exist at all; the fact they are as great as they are is a miracle. I also view the story through the lens of J.R.R. Tolkien as a WWI survivor, and ultimately as a meditation that ideas such as honor, courage, friendship, leadership, and trust live on a knife's edge within the human heart.

  • @MoriahDreams123
    @MoriahDreams123 Před rokem

My most rewatched movies were probably the ones I became obsessed with as a child.
    1. What's Eating Gilbert Grape, I'm sure when I was 5, the main appeal to me was probably, "why's that kid acting funny? That looks like fun. I wish he was my friend and then we could climb trees and eat candy"
But as I've watched it growing up, I've seen more and more things that appeal to me. I like the setting and the way the small, sleepy town is a reflection of what's going on in Gilbert who is also kinda numb, depressed, falling apart. He feels stuck in both the town, the state, the situation.
I like that it feels real. Like I could know these people. Or identify with parts of them personally.
    2. Neverending Story. It just looks great. It touches my heart that someone would put so much time, effort, and money into something made for children. Like, I was pretty happy watching the Dust Bunnies run around under the Big Comfy Couch. They didn't have to be so extra. But they WERE, and I'm glad. I like how the story about the big Nothing destroying everything could be a reflection of Bastion's grief and depression after the loss of his mother, and distance from his father, and the horrible bullying her endures at school. BUT there is hope because he learns that he can defeat it by wishing for things again!
Anyway, I'm really fucking depressed now, but it's nice to be able to geek out about the movies that saved me.
Also, Misery is a good time. Writing next to windows, sledgehammering feet, Kathy Bates. Doesn't get better than that. Speaking of Kathy Bates, until she gets her due for Dolores Claiborne, I won't be talking to anyone. 💅

I'm old enough to be a tad too old for the VHS revolution, but not too old for HBO. Around 1980, HBO was running 3 films heavily: "Moonraker", "Jaws", and "Watership Down". Those were the first films I remember watching over and over because they were always on. The first two were perfect for an 11-year-old. Maybe "Watership Down", too: I wasn't used to heavy cartoons with blood in them. My mother told me to help her prevent my little sister from seeing it. Naturally, being the horrible older brother I was, I found out it was coming on while my mom was taking a nap. My sister was scarred for about a year. Sorry kid! :)

When Julian Sands tells Helena Bonham Carter, "I want you to have your own thoughts and feelings even when i hold you in my arms." I just sigh. "Amelie" is just a feel good movie and i want to show everyone how wonderful it is. "Fargo" because of Frances McDormand's cop .

Edgar Wright has a knack for making the most rewatchable films. He's not my favourite director, but I can't deny that this is his main talent. Paul Thomas Anderson cracked it with Boogie Nights as well imo.
For both, I think it's to do with pacing and a very packed soundtrack of great songs/music. The scripts are filled with a lot of ideas/humour and the films are visual spectacles; when the story has many memorable moments and are edited in an exciting way that makes you anticipate what's coming next, yet you never get bored of it. A story with characters you feel you know and get to know better over time.
For me, it has to be something which is overflowing... with ideas and emotion

I love Sam Raimi's Spider-man (2002).....it was the first movie I saw where the CGI blew me away (Terminator 2's CGI was incredible too, but I hadn't seen it until years later). CGI in most movies I saw at the time looked like it was made with Microsoft Paint. To see Spider-man flying through the air like in the cartoons was exhilarating. It was cartoony and comic booky in the best ways.
I used to keep the DVD title screen playing on a loop just to see the web-slinging and listen to the theme. It was addicting. czcams.com/video/pf4RfhiakwM/video.html

Yes, Mulholland Drive is a masterpiece, and that's not a word I use often. The movie possesses a superhuman lightness of touch, like a soufflé. Not a single element of the movie is insufficiently integrated into the whole, and there is not a single second of "ponderousness" in the entire film. By ponderousness I mean anything that would solicit the audience's conscious "approval." Anything that seeks to "justify" the story to the audience. Paul Valery said, the most "necessary" lines of a poem are usually the worse ones, because they do the conscious "work" that the "fanciful" elements of the poem depend upon for their "weightlessness." In Mulholland Dr., these "necessary lines" are so entirely integrated into the fabric of the fanciful that you could not separate the two with the sharpest scalpel.

Disregarding rewatches as a kid, probably either Pulp Fiction or Goodfellas. I feel a different quality from those, more akin to music than film, i guess it also helps they have a ton of copyrighted music. They're like double albums, and you can just put them on and listen to it on a whim.
