    That bathroom scene is perfection, I'm glad you caught it. My take was he was paralysed during that moment, because he's always been emotionally distant. And once he's able to have a genuine emotional connection with someone through the guy who confessed how much he liked him, he paralysed because he didn't know how to tap into his emotional side.

    The 'murders and executions' part wasn't a 'slip up' on Bateman's part, it was intentional. He knew that the woman he was talking to wouldn't understand him (possibly over the noise of the club; possibly because he thought she wasn't really listening; possibly because he thought she wasn't intelligent enough to understand him) and found amusement in this fact. Also, the reason he didn't kill Carruthers was because he was repulsed by the latter's attraction towards him. Not because he harboured repressed homosexual feelings for him. Murder is a facet of Bateman's personality, which is necessarily predicated on the idea of domination. To him, the idea of subjugating a willing victim does not present any appeal. It's also possible that he was homophobic, but this would only be because homophobia (and toxic masculinity) was extremely ingrained in society at the time, and therefore the 'default' view that Bateman 'should' possess. All of Bateman's 'opinions' are just reflections of what he deems to be normative. But the idea of domination is the most important theme in this film. It doesn't just explain Bateman's character, but also the society he lives in: a culture that only cares about consumerism and mindless capitalism - having the best card, having the best haircut, having the best tan, having the best opinions; a society so vacuous and plastic that all identity is meaningless, to the point where Bateman is able to get away with multiple counts of murder purely because he is mistaken for someone else. His alibi also checks out because Halberstam mistakenly reports Bateman as being at dinner with his group on the night of Paul Allen's murder. Mistaken identity and the death of the individual are two key themes to watch out for. They crop up a lot and are part and parcel of the vacuous capitalism the film (and even more so the book) depicts. To me, the story most represents a warning against the dangers of unchecked consumerist culture and its themes are just as relevant to today's society as they were 30/40 years ago.

    Good review of a film I believe is overlooked and misunderstood by most people.
    American Psycho was probably one of the hardest novels to shoot and it would have been very easy to botch. I think the movie stands on its own narrative and captures the essence of the novel without including things which would ruin it - which is sadly often happens when changing from one medium to another.
    I read somewhere that Bret Easton Ellis made up the name Bateman from NorMAN BATEs. Sounds plausible.
    Not sure I agree about the notion of "perfect and orderly". I get the impression it's more a deeply ingrained cultural narcissism in which they try to one-up each other endlessly. Bateman's rivalry with Paul Allen is one example and it deeply upsets him that Allen was made vice president, can get a table at Dorsia, owns an apartment overlooking the park ("and is therefore obviously more expensive than mine") and even has a business card with a watermark (lol). Allen himself does in fact mock Bateman for not being on his level in the company and it's also clear that Bateman's "friends" in the company don't really see him as more accomplished or better than themselves. Some don't even get his name right. The only one who *does* admire and look up to Bateman is Luis Caruthers, and he's seen as effeminate and inept.
    Although Bateman's fiancee Evelyn likes him for his wealth and looks it's also clear she almost openly has an affair with Timothy Bryce and who knows who else. Bateman actually loathes her and eventually confesses that they don't really share a past and that's she's not terribly important to him. It's also implied she faked her own crying after they break up.
    In the novel Bateman bumps into Tom Cruise and instantly notes how "short" he is.
    I really like how Bateman sometimes openly confesses what he does but the people he talks to are so shallow and materialistic they couldn't care less and instead compliment his tan (Paul Allen) or flash their expensive accessory (Evelyn showing off her watch(?) to some acquaintance of hers) as if his inner thoughts and issues are completely irrelevant. Indeed "inside doesn't matter" in the world of American Psycho. The world has gone insane and Bateman's crimes just disappear in the void. Nobody notes his insanity. There is no catharsis for him.
    It's revealed that he hates his own job but does it because he "wants to fit in". Pretty telling.
    The comparing cards scene is laugh-inducing especially when Bateman sees Paul Allen's card. It's brilliant. He struggles to maintain his composure over a business card. Bateman's monologue about what he interprets as poignant and profound lyrics of a Huey Lewis song(!) really conveys how lost and clueless he is himself. Others believe he makes a valid point per se but that he has chosen rather bad music as a vessel for his inner thoughts.
    I really like the soundtrack of the film. In one scene Bateman and Bryce go to a dance club and they play True Faith by New Order. Saw them live last fall so this part always resonated with me.
    Keep 'em coming deepfocuslens.

    The scene with Luis and Patrick is one of the best scenes, it's Patrick out of his element, it's one of the most vulnerable moments for a character who's almost always in control. It's also one of the most hilarious scenes of the movie. It's suspenseful, complex and even bizarrely touching. Kinda like the whole film really, it constantly walks the line between so many different tones and juggles so many themes and offers so many layers that make it infinitely rewatchable.

  • @Onneff69
    @Onneff69 Před 7 lety +23

    My take on Bateman's character (and the director's intention) has always been that he is *symbolic* of American society itself -- at least since the 1980s when the rise of yuppies and the values and interests of Business(basically the new Corporatism) finally became the essential values of society itself. In no way did I regard the character as any sort of "victim", but rather the perfect portrayal of a true sociopath (as are many of the most successful business people in large corporations). That so many viewers apparently seem to find him somehow sympathetic - or "funny", or even perversely endearing - makes it that much more chilling in how truly lost in nihilism the culture has become during the past 40 years.

    • @mgmorgan0223
      @mgmorgan0223 Před 4 lety

      Patrick Bateman isn't a person...
      He's what we want to be...
      We look at him and most of us men, dream of being in his position.
      This review is about the film and plot, this isn't a good review. You touch on it pretty fine, but the way you say it's hysterical, is truly concerning. To me, calling it a comedy is really a stretch. There was around four moments that could be worth a giggle, but even then, it was extremely relatable. That feeling of wanting to tell someone you're tempted to murder, or have murdered, is real. That feeling of wanting to stand out no matter how crazy you may have to act, is real.

    you absolutely nailed it. the novel is brilliant in its curious ways, and was always regarded beeing unfilmable, but this masterpiece of a movie really does it justice. my favourite aspect of both, book and movie, has always been that all of the male characters appearing are so into their very own business cards, and proud of special font types in use or shades of white papers, which basically look all the same to ordinary people, but they all got the actual name of their department written wrongly, and nobody even notices, just like everybody is mixing up names or faces... its so unbelievably funny..

    If I may, I think the bathroom scene can be interpreted differently. At least, I interpreted it differently. When Louis allows himself to be vulnerable in front of Patrick he loses his appeal as desirable prey. It's like he loses his "hard on" for killing Louis because instead of seeing him as someone who just one upped him, he instead suddenly sees him as pathetic.

    This, American Hustle, and The Fighter are probably my favorite Bale performances. I think this one edges them out. I rewatched it on Halloween and laughed the entire time. It's really a hilarious film. I heard that David Cronenberg was attached to direct this. I would love to visit the alternate-Earth where that happened, but wouldn't change Herron's vision. She translated the story so well to film, and Bale IS Patrick Bateman. I don't think the film would be as successful if someone less subtle and nuanced as Herron adapted the story, which is one of the only books I've never been able to finish.

      This project has a long history with directors and actors
      honestly I wouldn't mind to see this movie by David Cronenberg I mean he used to be a popular director though (famous for these kind of psychological horror movies) I'm sure if he had directed this, then it would be a good summer blockbuster
      since Christian Bale wasn't a household name at that time. the studio desperately wanted Leonardo DiCaprio or Edward Norton as the lead Lol but thankfully Herron argued with the studio. that actors like DiCaprio will look too boyish in this role (she is not wrong tho I mean can you imagine? Romeo + Juliet kid in a character like this? 😂 it would have also ruin production and tone of this movie. since he was known for these kind of lover boy roles)
      she handpicked Bale for this role, she had strong confidence on him

    If this movie was directed by a guy you would have trashed it. Just like you trashed requiem for a dream, american beauty, and all of tarantino's films.

      Was it so hard to actually look up the reviews you mention if you wanted to make idiotic assumptions based on nothing but your insecurities? Because it's already sad enough on its own, even more so when you're so fucking lazy that you couldn't be bothered to spin your nonsense on something factual
