I know people get annoyed, but I've gotta say... it's pretty cool to look at a cast of a major horror film and see Black main characters and Asian main characters carrying the entire plot. It just feels like authentic and organic diversity... and something that still feels rare and novel (unfortunately). They're not playing token caricatures in a giant sea of homogenous characters either. It's quite refreshing. It takes a director willing to break those boundaries and take new risks. Bravo to Peele.

All his movies have the magical three layers that make the best films as good as they are.
1st layer is the story, A-Z, pretty simple. Anyone can write that.
2nd layer adds extra character depth, with believable actions and emotional connections. Good dialogue, etc. That's harder, but essential for a good movie. Makes you forget that an actor is playing a character.
All good movies do those two.
The 3rd layer is a theme that runs through, interconnects with all actions, characters, story elements, locations, etc. An overarching theme that's deep. All great movies have all 3.
What Peele does which is truly excellent is he makes the theme multifaceted. People can interpret this in multiple ways. There's more than one right answer.
      Truly stunning, excellent filmmaker.

@@abandonablesnowman you're right that certain people want to they can find a way to dismiss whats meant to be obvious, but Jordan Peele gives this character a very significant purpose, and as a very central part of his story telling.
The character was very unique, far from being any particular stereotype, his acting ability is phenomenal.
The scene where they talk about buying back the horses, the written on screen character evades the question, but the actor evades the audience, to do that simultaneously gives the illusion of magic.

What got me to love the movie aside from its amazing and captivating absurdity is how Steve Yeun portrayed the nuances of Jupe's character. It was so unique, mystifying, and, captivating. It brought back this feeling of childhood curiosity and wonder. It had me on the edge of my seat wanting to uncover the mystery of it all. The characters have depth and you genuinely care about them to the point where you feel like you’re there with them. I just saw Nope last night. I loved it. SPOILERS AHEAD. Having said that, I can’t help but feel like the character of Jupe was under utilised. I feel like the flashbacks positioned Jupe as the centre of the narrative, but the “present day” story didn’t reflect that enough. I wanted to see more of him with the other characters and more exploration of how his sense of survivor’s guilt played into what he was trying to do with the Star Lasso Experience. I’m going to have to watch it again, because maybe I missed some stuff, but what a fun film.

    • @murakami1793
      @murakami1793 Před rokem +61

Really fun film! In my opinion though I feel like Jupe didn’t have a bigger role because the type of kid he was, a child actor in a show that was commodifying an animal for the sake of entertainment (of course unbeknownst to him because he was a child) and the show exploiting the monkey STILL carried on into his adult life. Like, the monkey didn’t kill him (the theory as to why it didn’t was because it’s eyes were covered) when he was a kid and therefore he continued to exploit animals for money, and trying to profit off of the monster in the process. But you can’t cage an animal for long and the monster goes berserk just like the monkey. I’m not sure if this was the point Peele was trying to make but that’s what I got from watching it.

I soo much appreciate mass media in general that are born upon personal life struggles and contemplation, you can peek into the inner conflicts, questions and contradictions someone went through (or is still going through) and how they managed (or is managing, or decided how to manage) it. It is so interesting to know that the crew thinks of NOPE as a movie not so much about aliens, but more about "spectacle", the industry around it, and real live people in and outside those industries. I think the implications expand when currently ANYONE could - intentionally or unintentionally, willingly or unwillingly - be someone who spectates or becomes spectated.

This movie is unique in so many ways! Re-watchability! This movie is in the category with Jaws in that it's an instant classic that can enjoyably to be watched again and again. Something that most movies don't have. It has so many layers and it's truly thought provoking, another thing sorely lacking.

You can tell how personal this movie was to Jordan in these interviews man. You wouldnt think an alien horror movie could be so autobiographical but there you go lol. Symbolism-wise, it feels like everything came from IRL experiences.
Maybe thats the reason this movie unnerved me so much.. you can tell how real the horror and emotion is, like it came from a super real place.
Turning your trauma into monster movies is honestly pretty brilliant when you think about it

I’m so sad i found this movie 2 years after it came out. It is truly a wonderful film and has such a great, colorful, and charismatic cast. I love the way they interact and how passionate they all seem about this project. It’s suchhhh a fun movie to watch and it feels so immersive and grounded. JJ was written so carefully to be a believable creature. It’s easy to think it could exist outside of some small holes and flaws. And it’s not just the alien, it’s the characters, too. They feel like real people who have dreams and aspirations and priorities and they all have very different lives that still overlap in one way or another. They’re so well done and the acting is soooo good 😭
And knowing the movie now, some of the words used in all these interviews really stick out, and i think they were purposeful.
