    Sorry Dan but you are completely wrong about the sleeping bag. You need the down to loft to its maximum before you use it. It is at its most insulating when it is lofted. Then when you get in the heat you have is retained next to your body and the air in the loft keeps it that way.

    • @TheVocalMan
      @TheVocalMan Před 7 měsíci +14

      Yes, you're correct about the lofting otherwise it's just a blanket! 👍

    • @smokinrider

      Yep and down bags shouldn’t be stored compressed.
      Any bag needs a good wafting to loft up the filling to get beat thermal efficiency.

I can't believe you get critized & people are trying to sabotage your channel. Why are some people so bitter & jealous of other's success & achievements, we live in a sad world at times.
    Please keep making your videos & keep chatting away. There are times when I'm alone in the house & I put your videos on as it enables me to feel i'm out there, out doors with you, feeling the cold, smelling the fire & feeling alive 👍

    Best tip I heard from a Brit SF guy, before going to bed boil 1L of water, fill a Nalgene bottle, put that inside 2 clean thick socks and in your sleeping bag. Keeps you warm, and in the morning you have 1L of warm water to drink instead of a frozen bottle.

  • @glennrose3750

    Dan, interesting video, but you put your life at risk by going into freezing conditions with kit that was not up to the task. Myself, having spent many a jolly to Norway, Canada, and Alaska at her majesty's pleasure, get a military bivi bag. They are designed to be larger to take on board soldiers wearing clothing and kit. Being squashed because of your layers is not going to trap air that warms up. Likewise, with a down sleeping bag, it needs to be lofted to puff out and trap pockets of air. Even in the Harderdaggervida we would use our skis and poles to hold up the sleeping system before getting into the bivi. Camp smart, stay toastie, and wake up in the morning. Keep up the videos, really enjoy.

  • @johnking5730
    @johnking5730 Před 7 měsíci +3

    Hi Dan agree with previous comment, you need to loft your bag asap this will be much warmer through the night although you may feel it is cold initially when you settle down for the night. Also try not to wear to much as heat from your body doesn't get into the bag loft and you just stay cold.

    I once bivvied on my brothers summer house porch, and after the hammock collapsed, I slept really well, and when I woke up there was a hard frost. But I have spent many nights and frozen my shallots off! I camped at Horton in Ribblesdale in March one year and it was so cold my gas heater froze up. At 3am I decided to sleep in the car, and I took out my tent poles and the frozen tent didnt lose its shape 🤣 Its all about the experience.

    Hi Dan
    Yet again you lived to tell the tale, I don't mind -5°C but a bivvy would not have been my first choice.
    If your bivvy bag is too tight on you you won't get any warm air trapped between you and the cold, a little tip that you may already know/do is heat up (not boil) some of your drinking water and put it back in the bottle just before bed then put the bottle in a sock or something similar and put it between your legs in your sleeping bag, makes a big difference on them colder nights.
    Another tip for lighting fires, and your missus will have loads of it, get the lint from the filter in the tumble dryer, I just put a handful in a small plastic ziplock bag which will be enough to get about 3 or 4 fires going, and it lights so easy, food wise maybe you should have had a couple of Bombay bad boys I know how much you like em 🥵, they would have warmed your cockles up a bit before bed.
    p.s I'm not a big fan of Christmas so NO TREE for me.
    Cheers mate, all the best, keep safe.

    @YorkistRaven Před 7 měsíci

    At that temp and no tent, I knew you'd need a fire. You found some nice deadfall branches. If there are cedars, the soft bark can be peeled off and is very flammable and fluffy; if you ball it up and rub it in your hands it becomes like a little nest. You peel it off the vertical trunk, or where branches are sheltered from rain, and it will be dry. I imagine juniper and also yew bark might work as well. Don't use much yew, just enough to start, as the smoke is a little toxic. A nest of this soft bark takes a spark really well. Of course birch bark is very flammable and best torn up tiny. Pines, fir and spruce as well as cedar make resin that drips out and if you gather that, it also is super flammable. You can take cotton balls, or cedar fluff balls, and dip them in a little melted resin, leaving some fluff free of it, and then let them cool down and they make great fire starters. They smell wonderful too.
    I love your aventures and vicariously camping with you :)

    Lighter, lighter, lighter every time. Surviving in a cold climate is all about making life as easy as possible and although its all "Grizzly Adams" to go out and start your fire with a ferro rod after loads of attempts, but a lighter, warmed up in your pocket will work so much better, I carry a BIC in every pocket, pack and cook kit, no shame in being safe. Secondly, in cold weather, we were always taught to keep our water bottle close to your body to keep it from freezing. Don't take my critique to seriously, you have the gonads to get out there while I sit at home in the warm, good job.

    Hammock is the best way to stay warm in these temps providing you have the right equipment.
    I was out last night and compared to tent and mat it’s far warmer and infinitely more comfortable.
    I used a rab down sleeping bag with an Antarctica re for both set ups and the hammock was by far warmer with a snugpak cocoon with a broken zip and a dd under quilt over the top.
    It’s hard to get out of it in the morning into the cold though

    I've had a Mountain Equipment down bag since 1990 and it's still in use. Down bags, quite simply, trap body heat with great efficiency. Even if I left the tent for a pee, I'd still give it a quick loft up before getting back in. They won't stay warm long without a live body inside to generate heat. The best combination I have used are my down bag and a down filled Exped air mat. I've never been remotely cold with that combination.

    Dan, I’ve not looked through the comments. So, excuse me if I’m repeating what others have already said and I bet they have.
    You’re not getting the full performance out of your sleeping bag.
    There’s no room for it to loft up, due to the restrictions of your Bivvy bag (I’m not saying don’t use a Bivvy bag), plus the amount of clothing (and thickness of them) you are wearing.
    It’s the heat from your body that will, loft up the down & feathers.
    In that bag, you may of got away with and benefitted from just a thermal base layer, hat, gloves and bothy slippers.
    Put your closed foam mat on the floor, then your other mat.
    Also, Always set up a poncho or tarp, when you’re Bivvy bag camping.
