Great relaxing an informative video! I have the DMT coarse, fine and extra fine (blue,red,green) and a chromeoxid leather and leather without any compound. I get shaving edged mostly. Ordered the UF stone now. (the smaller one, not that which you use, but i guess it is getting the same results). Looking forward to try it out :-)

This video just popped up for me. Question months late it looks.
I have the Dmt diasharp stone set, all 3 of the Spyderco stones - lapped, dans soft, dans hard, dans translucent, dans black stones. I recently purchased the soft and hards dans where should I put them in the sharpening rotation? Example I have been using diasharp, then Spyderco all 3 then translucent then black . I want to try to add the soft/hard in there somewhere. Just not sure where. Thanks another great video.

Is there a steel or situation when you would use one type of stone or the other? Or do switch it just for the hell of it? Unlike some other guys who do videos who seem to stick to one type of system, you seem to change it up.

Nice stone! What would be the difference between the black Arkansas surgical and that stone? Talk about that xxfine DMT I made the mistake of getting that one too. I should send it back. Has no effect as doing it on the shapton 5000 same thing.
I have a Spyderco UF. Its the highest grit i have at the moment so thats what I finish with before stropping. Im looking at getting an 8" or 10" soft/black Dan's combo stone.

I felt that my results were similar, but I am fairly novice at freehanding. The only blades that I have run across it are my LTWK JX3 in A2 and my Old Timer Sharpfinger.
@@jesseprice4050 dont get me wrong...I dont regret buying the stone one bit..in fact I ordered a 4" stone to compliment my arkies and spydies while using either a kme or tsprof blitz system.
So far the spydie uf comes across to me as being slightly finer...
But I havent tried to do a test finishing 1 blade with the norton and another with the spyderco...to me that would be the best comparison.
And with regards to being a newbie at freehand...I have been free handing for better part of 40yrs...and I still consider myself a newbie. I can get great consistent results...just dont ask me what I set my angle at..lol
Chris just makes it look so easy...and his results are just spectacular.
For me, yes I get better results when using a fixed angle system....but just the zen element of free handing makes it worth it for me.
Dont give up...with practice you will be amazed at your own results.

I'm coming off 1000 grit diamond and can't get tree topping hair whittling edge you think I need to go finer in stones I got diamond emulsion .25 I got them from 1 to .025 and have not been able to get hair popping edge

I have never seen an edge off a blue black ark before. The black ark is scary freaking sharp as it is. I rarely use mine but I always followed the black after the uf rod. Last few years I've really come to enjoy a soft ark, hard ark and a spyderco fine to finish on for most steels. I don't think its an edge that will impress anyone but it seems to hold up good for my uses.
I sharpened a small blade off a stag stockman and showed it awhile back. And there are many good finishers out there.
I just got that soft/black dans combo stone last night. I haven't had a chance to use it yet. It is gorgeous. Just a suggestion, but I would like to see how you lap your spyderco uf. I have all 3 spyderco ceramic stones. I wouldn't mind having two grits on each stone. It might make them more versatile. They're great stones.

And I make it. It's a febreze fabric to go bottle. I put about 6 drops of blue dawn dishsoap in it and the rest water and shake.

Where do you get your Arkansas stones, and if you chose the black or translucent to follow the spyderco UF which would it be?
I usually get most of my stuff from Dan's Whetstone's. And some off eBay, trading etc.
I have several videos also take a look when you get a chance. And I would use a black after the Spyderco uf. It's finer than a translucent.
Do you have a video on lapping this one? If not do you lapp it with just sand paper?

Also I discovered WD-40 and a rag will take the rust off the threads on your stone holder if you do it every now and then.

I need to get a DMT for more course work. My mom and ex-wife needed a knife for yard work so I gave them my Elmax little Creek. I got it back with a chipped tip and no way to fix it. I'm not even sure I could if I had the right stones just because I've never had to do that much work on a steel like that.

Hey Rough Rooster, thanks for these videos, have you ever lapped the Spyderco?
They say the pyderco has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, so it sounds like it should be harder than any ark, but I believe you that its smoother. I don't usually use super high hardness steels.
Not extensively. But yes. Just to smooth out out a bit.
When we talk about stone hardness we are saying how hard it is to release abrasive not the actual hardness of the abrasive. For example King 1000 is quite soft but the abrasive is Aluminum Oxide that has 9 Mohs.
Arkansas stones on the other hand are quite hard because they don't release abrasive but the particle itself is relatively soft, 7 Mohs. That means it will cut slower than man made stones but 7 Mohs converting to Rockwell means Arkansas have 70 HRC and can still cut pretty much any steel.
Probably Arkansas is going to have a hard time cutting High vanadium carbide steels like Rex121 or Maxamet since these carbides are harder than 9 Mohs.
Thats probably the case but things are not so simple. Aluminum oxide is not supposed to cut vanadium carbides because vanadium carbides are harder but there are electron microscopy studies showing that Aluminun oxide stones actually does cut these carbides and I have no idea why.

It's so ironic, that after a sharpening session..I click on video...I had just finished a similiar progression on a vg-10 chef's knife.
I will run up the grits of dmt plates...then kinda take a step backwards with using the spyderco medium, then fine, then the norton uf, then the spyderco uf followed by Dan's translucent arkie then black.
For the question on the norton ascent ceramics...I like it, but feel the spyderco uf is finer...and price wise they are about the same...had purchased mine few weeks back after I asked you...sharpening supplies.com Carries them.

I can whittle hair coming off the spyderco uf without stropping. When I go to the black ark I can’t get there without stropping. Guess there’s a problem with my technique. The black is great for my str8 razors though.

If your going to lap your spyderco, just buy the fine. It is the same stone, the extra fine is the fine lapped at the factory for $30. If you buy the fine you can lap both sides one side a little finer than the other.

Your probably not going respon but spyderco fine and ultra fine ceramic stone are made form the same material it just the ultra fine is more polished with a dimond. So try testing the uf after it got lapped with 50 grit dimond dust on plan glass until the pencil marks are gone and yes a cheapo 20$ dimond plates works to but it doesn't flat as well but leaves just as good finsh

Great videos, time to consider investing into a better camera and a sharpness tester.
Why? People love what I do now.
My fingers have gotten to the point where I can tell the different levels of sharpness. I can tell when my blade is at its optimal sharpness and when it needs a little more work just by thumbing and 3 fingering it. I know you can do the same with your experience.

Been honing straight razors for 20 years now, and I recently spent a lot of time trying to figure out which would be the best finisher of my trans Ark, black Ark and Spyderco UF. ALL THREE have been carefully lapped to 2k with silica carbide, and are like glassy mirrors. I have photos of the UF where you can see the reflected image in it - see here: drmoss.ca/Web%20Images/Spyderco.jpg. So this year I went through my entire collection of straight razors to make sure all were as sharp as can be when they are sold by my widow, as it seems like I may not be long for this world. The Ultrafine is the clear winner. I have honed nearly 200 razors over the last few months, and shaved with them, using all sorts of varied hone and stone progressions. I'm getting the best edges of all with the lapped UF. I cannot stress enough that bit about 'lapped'! Really hard stones that don't release grit particles depend on the scratch pattern on the surface, not on the contained grit size to determine their effective grit. A black Ark straight from Dan's will be lapped to 600, and you won't know what it is capable of until you lap it to 2k. The same is true of the Ultrafine (I'm pretty sure it isn't the alumina in the hone responsible for the results, but the epoxy-like matrix that suspends the alumina). Razors come off it better than off a paddle strop with CrO2. It makes me drop my jaw to find out how much I still have to learn after this long! One thing I'm sure about is that there are many ways to skin a cat, and I don't doubt you can get better results with your stones on your knives doing it your way. But with my 2k lapped stones and straight razors, the UF is the outright winner in my hands. If I survive the bone marrow transplant later this month we can argue about it some more, but until they ban me from using proper razors in a couple of weeks, I'll stay with the lapped UF as my last stone.

On to more important matters - I'm going to have to eat humble pie and say I was wrong, and you were right. I believe the 2k-lapped UF is still so much faster a cutter that it deceived me into thinking I was getting a better edge than with the black Ark (also 2k-lapped). I now realise the Ark will do a finer job, but takes quite some time for the results to show. The UF still serves a very useful purpose though in being used before the Ark, in that after using it I don't need to spend as long on the Arkansas before the edge gets to be where I want it.

I haven't seen you run off the corner of a stone, let alone twice in the same session, in a long long while. I think you been getting too comfy with those big as runways, like the big ol' translucent primitive cut and so the "normal" 8 x 3 is messin' with ya rhythm ;) Man, when I run off the stone's edge I tend to do damage. Maybe I need to lay off the coffee LOL.
Anyway, I may need to quit watchin' your channel for a while so I can save some money for groceries instead of more stones. (Kidding...kinda, ooh, stimulus check! never mind ).
So, I do have one serious question, I was always under the impression that the Spyderco UF Ceramic was equivalent to a Shapton Pro or Naniwa Pro splash n go which I have in my progression for all but really high V steels like S110V, etc.. Do I have that wrong?
Two other things:
1) One day, I'd love to see your current kitchen cutlery maintenance routine.
2) Today, I was wondering if it were possible for you to put a mic right down there next to the stone(s) while you're working so we could hear the grind, especially on the finer stuff. This is just one of those things that I think would be pretty cool. But who knows? I keep thinking that it would help convey how much pressure you are using as you go along.

The ceramic seems like the right tool to flatten the black one. I guess you dont wanna scratch it with DMT. The finish would be only as fine as the DMT. Not to mention I've heard that they are not super flat. (Nor the ceramic one) At least you can lay optical flat on it. The diamonds would scratch it

Great explanation , great video, thanks. You might use glycerine as a honing oil , it is incredible, removes shaving from ceramic stone instantly. I don't know why but it is effective on both ceramics and Arkansas black and moon stones also. Could be the viscosity , I do not know , I love the ease of clean up .Give it a try , Please . The added bonus glycerin is mild not stinky , some glycerin is food grade. Give it a try , Pharmacy section of most box stores .
