    Great video.
    Love my Opinels. Have had a #8 for 30+ years and it’s still a great knife. Sharpens really quick and very slicy

    God, Chris....I ran into exactly that today....I figured it out pretty good. And THEN your video popped up to remind me of what I learned from you already.....it's getting that bevel with the coarsest stone you start with! Great video, Buddy!

    Every Opinel I've bought has come with wonky edge bevels, and minor dips in the edge. Buuuut they don't take long to fix, and take a fantastic edge. For what you pay for an opinel, I'm certainly not complaining. I've payed way more for a project knife.

    That opinel does slice really well though...
    The thin profile does help. It’s just like why straight razors sharpen easily.

    Very informative video this evening. I have 2 Opinels and both of them had a belly in the exact same spot. I like the Opinel they are a good knife & fairly easy to sharpen. Very hot & dry in Indiana too my friend. We had the driest June in 19 years in NW Indiana.

    I have an opinel #8 in carbon steel. The first thing I did was loan it to my grandmother at a cookout to slice a tomato. It gave it one hell of a patina! Lol! Great video Chris. Also it's been hot as hell here too but we've had a thunderstorm almost every evening except a few this week.

    For sharpening knives, would you rather have a 6" x 3" or 8" x 2" inch stone? Knife lengths under 6". 6 x 3 has slightly more surface area.

    • @roughroosterknifesharpenin5531
      @roughroosterknifesharpenin5531  Před 4 lety

      I have 1 6" stone. And I never use it
      It's not about area. It's about length. Most of my stones are at least 10" long x 2" 6 inch stones are basically useless to me

    How do I get a knife to open and close like that? I have a coworker who bought a brand new folder and the damn blade's edge shape wasn't straight at all. Had to lap my coarsest stone on some bricks that I lapped flat using the three plate melt and doesn't over an hour getting rid of the obviously unintentional concave shape.

    I sometimes find my blade has a wider bevel on one side and would struggle with it to get it more even. At the time I thought it was the angle l was holding the blade and now I know at least what else to check for. Thanks for the video. Hmmm Asymmetrical possibility?

  • @jdemeter4357
    @jdemeter4357 Před 4 lety

    Absolutely right, how you sharpen on the first stone, the quality. The rest of the stones are playing catch up for what should have been done in the first place. The way you where showing one side sharpen more act's like a wood plane and the other side act's like the plane blade was installed up side down..
    Great video,,makes me think

    • @roughroosterknifesharpenin5531
      @roughroosterknifesharpenin5531  Před 4 lety

      Exactly! A wood plane is what I was thinking.
      They would be playing catch up, but it would become harder with each stone.

    The only time Ive found a knife cuts better with a really think profile is when its a kitchen knife cutting stuff like carrots, or cutting large pieces of cardboard. Everything else Ive used a knife for a thick blade works just as good as a thin one.
