God, Chris....I ran into exactly that today....I figured it out pretty good. And THEN your video popped up to remind me of what I learned from you already.....it's getting that bevel with the coarsest stone you start with! Great video, Buddy!
Every Opinel I've bought has come with wonky edge bevels, and minor dips in the edge. Buuuut they don't take long to fix, and take a fantastic edge. For what you pay for an opinel, I'm certainly not complaining. I've payed way more for a project knife.
Very informative video this evening. I have 2 Opinels and both of them had a belly in the exact same spot. I like the Opinel they are a good knife & fairly easy to sharpen. Very hot & dry in Indiana too my friend. We had the driest June in 19 years in NW Indiana.
I don't have very many. I've had to sell alot. Yes it was. I sharpen man, I'm not really a reviewer. I've tried that in the past and they don't get watched. Thank you for the kind words
I have an opinel #8 in carbon steel. The first thing I did was loan it to my grandmother at a cookout to slice a tomato. It gave it one hell of a patina! Lol! Great video Chris. Also it's been hot as hell here too but we've had a thunderstorm almost every evening except a few this week.
I have 1 6" stone. And I never use it It's not about area. It's about length. Most of my stones are at least 10" long x 2" 6 inch stones are basically useless to me
How do I get a knife to open and close like that? I have a coworker who bought a brand new folder and the damn blade's edge shape wasn't straight at all. Had to lap my coarsest stone on some bricks that I lapped flat using the three plate melt and doesn't over an hour getting rid of the obviously unintentional concave shape.
I sometimes find my blade has a wider bevel on one side and would struggle with it to get it more even. At the time I thought it was the angle l was holding the blade and now I know at least what else to check for. Thanks for the video. Hmmm Asymmetrical possibility?
Absolutely right, how you sharpen on the first stone, the quality. The rest of the stones are playing catch up for what should have been done in the first place. The way you where showing one side sharpen more act's like a wood plane and the other side act's like the plane blade was installed up side down.. Great video,,makes me think
The only time Ive found a knife cuts better with a really think profile is when its a kitchen knife cutting stuff like carrots, or cutting large pieces of cardboard. Everything else Ive used a knife for a thick blade works just as good as a thin one.
I guess you have the 12C27 version on your table... 22:18 nope it is the carbon version... Sweet sharpening equipment btw... these DMT stones are exactly what I would buy for freehand sharpening if I would got the cash for... Thanks for the tutorial...
@@sensei1326 I'm sorry, I have a hard time believing that. I've been doing this for many years, and I have the best green compound made. I can't even accomplish that result from the 2.
Great video.
Love my Opinels. Have had a #8 for 30+ years and it’s still a great knife. Sharpens really quick and very slicy
Your video has given me a greater understanding of how to work the edge of a blade!
Good that's what I'm after.
TRUTH. It aint the stone, it's the guy running the steel across it.
Nice video Chris. Always appreciate the good tips.
No problem

Yep. The last two weeks here have been a fireball.
Good Stuff. Brilliant demonstration! Every man who worked with a chisel on wood will understand immediatly.
Exactly

That opinel does slice really well though...
The thin profile does help. It’s just like why straight razors sharpen easily.
I know, that's why these people that do "sharpness tests" use the thinnest blade possible.
Another great video. Thank you.
Thanks man
I love ❤️ ur videos please make more!

I had heard at the beginning of this year, that it was going to be the hottest on record. And thank you.
You are welcome
Very nicely demonstrated brother beautiful job.. stay safe and healthy 😘👍
Thank you
I love your channel. Was that a bugout with copper scales? You should do a video features all the knives you have at the moment.
I don't have very many. I've had to sell alot.
Yes it was.

Opinel all have the dip in the middle of the blade, bummer... Thanks for the video 😎👍

Same exact way here. Yea tomatoes will force a instant patina. That's my go to.
For sharpening knives, would you rather have a 6" x 3" or 8" x 2" inch stone? Knife lengths under 6". 6 x 3 has slightly more surface area.
I have 1 6" stone. And I never use it

I take it apart and buff all the pivot and contact points.
Makes a lot of sense
Thank you
No prob
Love your videos, but don’t you think you should lock the blade when you work on it?
No, what difference would that make?
And thank you
that was a nice lesson. I learned something today. It was 113 here last week and summer has just started. It will go up to 118 degrees by August.
I'm glad. I couldn't do that.
That's crazy

16:55 One of the most Important beginners tips right there.

Exactly! A wood plane is what I was thinking.
They would be playing catch up, but it would become harder with each stone.
Yup that price is correct.
Thank you
cool
That cut on your finger reminded me of a couple nights ago....
Lol
I’m from Texas we live next to the sun
Uh huh. bit ya. Hate when that happens.
3:55 my dentist asked me if wanted keeping chewing red man or keep my teeth lol. I miss Red Man though, That was some good stuff! Sweet as sugar!
Yep. I've since quit dipping
I gotta get me a DMT
The only time Ive found a knife cuts better with a really think profile is when its a kitchen knife cutting stuff like carrots, or cutting large pieces of cardboard. Everything else Ive used a knife for a thick blade works just as good as a thin one.
EXACTLY! Thank you for saying that!
Gotta be careful with any knife, but if you mess with knives you will get cut.
Indeed. I cut my finger wide open a couple days ago just like that. Was still bleeding the next night.

No these are carbon. And when these dmt wear out, I won't buy from them anymore. There a joke
Bet you will like these and much cheaper.

I was wondering when you were gonna chime in lol
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 Yea they need to put me on the payroll.
Im terrible at getting symmetrical bevels.
The key is working both sides and watching the tip.
That's what she said 😂
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 So, can you go back after the fact and even them out easily? Or do you have to thin out the blade first.
@@sharpwhits0167 you can even them out. That's why it takes me longer to reprofile
Here in westTexas it's been 100+ since April
Hu shit
I am now able to get hair whittling off dmt medium and a strop too
@@sensei1326 A dmt medium? And what strop?

I'll let you fight that out with Bama Fan lol 😅
Dang, beat me to it.
@@bamafaninky861 Dont worry, it was just dumb luck. Wont happen again, i promise.
Bama has it down tho. It don't matter when I post he's usually on it.

What are you talking about?
Never had a complaint on any of my videos with anything like this. So Get fucked 🖕
Seems like a crappy knife. You said $12 right? Why not buy better steel and sharpen that
