These kinds of instructive videos are too rare. No flexing, just a good instructional video that describes the somewhat neglected part of sharpening that's kind of a mystery to new sharpeners. Off to mess up a junker for science. Thank you sir, valuable info.
God, Chris....that is one of the most IMPORTANT videos you've done. I know what it means to start something up several times....I used to do one-hour radio programs. It means you are getting things RIGHT! Anyway, you explained things that I've noticed (heard) before that didnt make sense until you TAUGHT me ..that hadn't sunk in before. I'll nominate you for Tennessee Teacher of the Year!
This has been an awesome video! This one and the previous one . I'm 49 , and I started learning to free hand when I was about 13. It has actually taken that long and I'm still learning things. I really appreciate you taking the time to do this teaching. I will be a regular viewer!
I keep going back and watching this video. I think it is one of the best you ever made. I think I've watched every video at least twice, most 3-4 times. Hope your doing well and staying safe.
Great video. I was free hand sharpening for years with mixed results. But it took me awhile to realize the quieter the sound the better my Edge was. Most of the time I was trying to sharpen add a shallower angle. Maybe shooting for a 15-degree when I should have been shooting for a 20 degree bevel. Anyway, I think you did a great job simplifying this idea. Please keep up the good work.
Its like you read my mind lol! Had this exact problem with my little esee izula where my bevel looked great it was somewhat sharp but it just didn't have that quiet paper cutting ability and I know I can do better. Im almost positive that I likely had my angle a little to steep after seeing this. Thanks as always for the lesson!
I saw your comment on neeves knives. Please keep making videos. Most of these dudes on here actin like they know somethin are clowns. The majority of us watching you really appreciate your experience and the content you put together. I respect your feelings about what's going on though. Either way thanks again for your time and effort you've put into these videos.
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 True, but at least I am eliminating one of the problems: correct angle. It remains the problem of keeping the correct angle. :)
I noticed what your saying when using Arkansas stones, the feeling of suction to the stone when holding a perfect angle. It doesn't have skating SOUND or feel. THANK YOU FOR THE ADVICE
Almost all of my sharpening videos I change the bevels. I have so many here I can't remember what all's on what. The best advice I can give, is just start watching lol
I feel like freehand sharpening came naturally to me. (Could be the hours upon hours of freehand sharpening videos and forums I was reading before I decided to jump in and get some stones.) I was able to get my very first knife the first time it hit the stone to sharper than I ever was able to on either the sharpmaker or the clamp and jig from work sharp and reprofiled my mom's jagged kitchen knife a week later.
I can get hair whittling edges if im trying for them but ive always been confused by what people called feedback. Stones be them waterstone, diamond, spyderco ceramic, or arkansas all felt the same no matter the angle I used unless it was digging into the stone.
You dislike the victorinox paring knife. What would you recommend for a reasonably priced paring knife? Have you used an opinel No 102 or 112 paring knife before?
Hey Chris. How do I contact you? I am going to make a paddle strop and the leatyer is only 1.5-2mm thick. So I need to ask you how you apply the leather perfectly flat and not get wrinkles etc.. Thanks, ---Mike
Any chance that we can get in depth pocket stone usage video? I just bought the entire run of pocket stones from Dans and would like some tips on their usage. Keep up the great content!
Because people try and re invent the wheel over and over. I've got fine India's and crystalon stones in that grit. There's no need for them in my setup. I've found what works and works very well. I get some incredible edges. Plus it's gonna be way over priced just because it says spyderco on it. Just no interest
Hey rooster I just recently started sharpening knives and learning, I canât seem to get my knifes to hair cutting sharp I cant seem to figure out what I may be doing wrong, theyâll all cut threw paper effortlessly but will not cut hair.
The problem is that 99% of the time people aren't tilting it back or upright to that extreme that would result in that obvious sound change. Most of the time it's a couple of degrees or two, especially one side vs. the other. There won't be the sound difference. If people are doing the extreme angles you are describing, they are waaaaaayyyyyyyy off.
the way i learned, when the angle is exactly right, it feels a little bit like it's cutting into the stone a particular way. i'm no expert at all but can get a knife shaving sharp. i use a circular motion because all my stones are small pocket stones. i test sharpness on my thumbnail and then on rolling paper

Great video. It really shows a thorough knowledge when you can explain something like this to someone who knows nothing about the skill.
The only bad thing about this is I didn't find your channel sooner.
excellent video!!!
Excellent tutorial, and very well explained! Great video.
I still think this was one of your best. 4th time watching.
Exactly! Good info amd feel and sound are just as important as what your looking at when it comes to sharpening.
Fantastic explanation on beveled terms and showing the definition, 1st time I've ever seen and heard it on any sharpening channel.
Cuz half of them don't really know.
A good, bright light also helped me to spot the burr forming and to see it continue the length of the edge! Great video Chris!
That is very important. I always knew it, but in the move I hadn't set up my big light yet. And I knew it cuz I couldn't see

Great video on this topic. The hardest part of sharpening is to keep that angle through the whole process. Thank you for the demo.
Yes sir. Thanks for the view
Nice video with more good information.
Thanks man! Good to see you coming around more
To make sure that I am sharpening at a correct angle, I am using a sharpie marker.
I mean that will help some, but it don't ensure you're holding a correct angle.
