This is a critical step(s) that are essential to begin to freehand. Try someplace quite to begin with. Listen to every stroke. And check progress often! Know what your doing to that edge.

It took me a long time to fix my mothers knives after her pulling them through one of those v sharpeners for years. It was taking big chips out of all her knives. I seriously thought about just buying her a new set but she had some old Ontario, Chicago, etc. and nice French knives so I struggled thrugh it. I also make her covers for them so when she throws them into a drawer with a buch of other stuff they might stand a chance...........
i have been trying to learn how to sharpen a knife for a while now and your videos give so much information that i need. not sure if you remember but i actually met you a year or so ago in your apartment. Im the cable guy that fixed your internet. You showed me your stones. was good times.
Good info. I tried freehand most of my life but didn’t know the basics and was never happy with my results. Been using an edge pro and get great results. With what I have learned using it and what I’m getting from your videos I believe I will be able to sharpen freehand and would prefer that over the edge pro. Just ordered a couple diamond plates and a Spyderco ceramic. Can’t wait for them to come in and give it a try.
any tips for a stubborn burr (s30v) i cant seem to knock it off with alternating strokes with light pressure ..frustrating lol...should i raise my angle with light pressure ?
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and going in to detail. Much appreciated.👍

A steady hand is one thing I gotta work on my hands shake more than a girl at bar

Yea that makes me cringe thinking about the pull through sharpeners lol. And just throwing them in a drawer lol

David Dearen Yea man i do. thats crazy u found my channel lol. Im glad i could help 👍
Thank you for this. My late husband left a ton of knives behind.
Jessica Brown im sorry to hear that. And thats awesome!

Mark Reddoch Dang man i hope u like it. Thats a chunk do drop into the unknown
Actually I guess I said that wrong it was just one plate double sided 400/1000 grit for about $35. The Spyderco was more expensive though.
I like your straightforward teaching. Do you have a video on sharpening a hawksbill blade?
Rafael Gelpi i appreciate that. and i do not. but i can add that to my list of vids to do. not so much of a easy task
Does Benchmade replace blades for a fee? It Irritates me to learn Spyderco is shrewd and won’t replace a blade, even if you’re paying for a new one. 🙄

Peter Vu do you strop at all? And yes I would raise it just a bit with light pressure
Light cutting stroke through Balsa wood.
Would you choose the 10"x3" dia sharp over the two sided 12"x3" dia sharp?
absolutely, the 10 is plenty.
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 Do you use a stone holder for your DMT 10"x4" or do they have grips on the bottom?
@@backpackingWY I use a stone holder for every stone I have.
@@roughroosterknifesharpenin5531 Can you list your stone holder(s) you use?
@@backpackingWY just get on sharpeningsupplies.com and type in sharpening stone holders. They only sell one type
On spot first learn to sharpen, then get good enough into it and after learn reprofile. But learn to sharpen first, before reprofiling.
Christian B agreeed. you can bugger up a blade bad if ur just chasing your tail
