Form there, it isn't a points race and the only thing on the line is the payout for winning (doesn't effect the end of year title). Basically this race is a dash for cash.

Granted this guy had won all those championships by then but to my surprise he said something over the radio and did not pack it up and go home like most would of in his shoes. He told his team "we are gonna fix this issue at Texas about not being competitive from here on out here RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW." Went back out on the track and obviously tried different set-ups a dozen or so times and he finished 43rd (only happened twice him finishing dead last). He won the next race in Texas! @@jesuschristislord6790 but you also have guys who started slowing down in their careers later on and retired by their mid 40's. David Pearson and Cale Yarborough won their last races when they were 45. Ned Jarrett retired when he was 34. Outside the Sonoma win in his last year of racing (when he was pretty much starting to turn into a shadow of his old self on the track), Tony Stewart was 42 when he won his second to last race of his career at Dover.
A driver going like Bobby Allison, Mark Martin, or Dale Earnhardt still being remotely competitive even in their late 40's-early 50's is a rarity, not the norm. Maybe Jeff Gordon could have, with the right set up, found something else to be competitive still, while finding ways to treat his back, while still racing in his late 40's or early 50's. But odds are, with the way his back was, he probably knew that downward trend was going to find him, and he'd end up just doing laps if he kept on at it in his late 40's or early 50's.

From about 2006 onward whenever Jeff got into a hard crash Darrell, Larry, and Mike would occasionally bring up his back problems. Hard hits and always finding the unprotected wall will do that.
One that stands out to me is when Jeff pancaked the outside wall on the backstretch at Dover while qualifying and the fans cheered and the announcers were disgusted. Mike Joy said something like "if you have back problems, you're gonna know it here."

There goes my hero the day he left the sport is my song for Jeff as Dale Earnhardt I was not the biggest fan but the drivers that win a lot take bad crashes kyle bush and Jimmie Johnson as well they just find the worst ways to crash but Jeff my favrout driver in glade he walked way happy from the sport he loved
