This video review of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) is an update to the video I recorded several years ago on NAC.
In this video you'll discover the nootropic benefits of NAC. Including why we use NAC as a nootropic, recommended dosage, side effects, clinical research, and where to buy NAC for nootropic use.
N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) is the N-acetyl derivative of the naturally occurring amino acid L-cysteine. And works primarily by helping restore the body’s natural antioxidant glutathione.
NAC modulates glutamate levels and dopamine release in the brain. Excess glutamate in your brain is toxic to brain cells affecting neuron health, cognition, memory and mood. And NAC protects dopamine receptors. Influencing dopamine levels and function in your brain.
NAC reduces irritability, anxiety and depression. NAC increases your body’s antioxidant capacity, and balances excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters in your brain. Resulting in less anxiety and depression.
Neurohackers report that supplementing with NAC could be the best nootropic they’ve ever used for their brain and overall health. Thinking is clearer, better memory, less anxiety and depression, OCD symptoms reduced, better sleep, weight maintenance is easier, less flu and cold, skin looks better, you feel younger, and hangovers are less severe.
N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) suggested dosage for cognitive benefit is 500 mg 3-times per day.

For almost a year I had persistent respiratory problems and interupted sleep from post-nasal drip that was left over from a Covid infection. After 6 months of 600 mg a day of NAC I was 90% free of all symptoms! I've continued taking it as many of the unexpected benefits mentioned in this video had become apparant.
Very in depth and summarized information. NAC is amazing and the fact that it isn't used more in pharma these days says a lot about current medicine. I've had great results with it. It's extremely cheap and basically natural. Basically no side effects. Current pharma hates it.
I take NAC twice a day, morning and evening, total of 2400mg. I knew that it was good for you, but not this good. Great informative video!
Also NAC kills colds. At least the meant aspect of it (tiredness, brain fog, bad cognitive function) As soon as you feel it coming take 1-2g and for me and my family as well it works. Also helps with expectoration
I have been using NAC 3-times per day for over a decade. And when the rest of the family is getting a cold or the flu I generally do not get it. Which is not a surprise because NAC is a precursor to Glutathione which is our master antioxidant which supports our immune system.
You're right. This is my favorite supplement. It has completely changed my life. Thank you.
This is a miracle supplement❤
Thanks again. I've added to my many supplements based on your erudite advice.
The BEST NOOTROPICS Channel!!!
Thank you!!!
Thank you for covering NAC. I’ll be sharing this.
Thank you for sharing this Darin. Much appreciated.
An updated video from nootropics expert on NAC?
Just what the doctor ordered.. 😋
Thank you. Your Indepth knowledge is a great blessing
Thank you Jen.
I have been able to sleep better since taking this . My mood feels better as well .
Always so clear and easy to understand. Thank you
Thanks!
Nice summary thanks for the update :-)
Thank you Jonas.
Great information! Thank you.
Well done!
Best use case for me is after stimulant use, or eating something unhealthy. Also after alcohol helps with hangover and damage a lot
Thanks for sharing...I use it with glycine as well.
NAC is great. I take it with Glycine. I first learned of it at MedCram, during COVID (for its potential fighting power against that), and stocked up on it right before the ban scare. Appreciate your content, as always.
EDIT: I've read too that taking it BEFORE drinking can help protect the liver, but taking it AFTER shows to do more damage. Can you comment on validity on that, or if you know of anything about this?
NAC will not cause liver injury in the majority of people. But if you follow the recommended 500 mg 3-times per day then when you do drink people report hangovers are not as severe. Likely because of the increase in Glutathione.
I took some just now. Haven't been taking it, but had some on hand.
Thank you.
Great video!
Thank you Deirdre.
Superb video - Thanks David :-)
Thanks!
@@NootropicsExpert hi David - do you have any videos on how to manage / cure POTS with nootropics ?
I don't. I concentrate on brain health and optimization and not other areas of the body and related issues.
Thanks David!
Welcome Jeff!
Another great video. You mention that high doses of NAC deplete zinc. What doses are considered as high? Thanks.
Anything over the recommended 1,500 - 1,800 mg total per day.
V. nice and informative lecture for professionals like me .
Nice update🤔🤔👍
I changed front NAC to L-Cysteine together with glycine for supporting glutathion production.
The reason was that I didn't want the mucolytic effect of NAC. Especially for the intestines.
It's not clear from the research that NAC actually hurts the intestines, but the effect on the mucus
is there, and I wanted to eliminate that possible side effect.
Since I don’t get any nootrooic effects from it, and don’t want any, NAC isn't my choice.
I don't take the 7 - 8 g doses used in the GlyNAC research, though. Just a tiny 0.6 g, to add to
the about 0.8 g I get from protein
It would be interesting to know more about other effects of NAC than the nootropic ones.
The frying pan joke was unexpected but appreciated nonetheless.
So glad I listened to this, you were talking to me about tbi..I am sure I
Sustained a vagal nerve injury too.
Ive been researching abd using herbs, supplements, and the best
Cleanest foods. But Im missing
Something, sounds like NAC is it.
I have had it in an online shopping cart for a year
Thanks
Thank you
. . 🧠 this man has a beautiful brain, I’m certain of it ✔
Thanks for breaking it down! I've been using successfully for brain fog and congestion for the last year! I wasn't aware about the benefit for Parkinson's Disease; I will share with a PD Therapy Center.
Please do share it. Thanks.
Hey David, How about NAC + Glycine, Thanks for everything, will check out that book
Dave in Japan, check out my earlier comments re. Glycine.
My favorite piano Composer Chopin would had benefited from NAC because he died of Cystic Fibrosis.
David, Thanks as always for the great information. I was taking NAC with Glycine trying to create my own version of GlyNac, which I understand makes the NAC more easily absorbable than just taking NAC by itself. Because I am going through radiation therapy, my doctor had me stop all antioxidants while going through therapy. He says I can restart next month👍. Do you have any input or info regarding the benefits of combining Glycine and NAC to create a beneficial synergy, as claimed by the GlyNac product? Thanks again David and please keep up the good work!
NAC does not need any assistance to do its job. But if you are going to sell a NAC supplement and compete with other companies the Glycine thing sounds like a good story.
Hi Doc..your the best..an thanks..i started taking Nac..with Glycine almost two weeks ago..two 600mg caps in the morning two at night..with zinc too..
And two 100mg caps of Magnesium Biglycinate..seens to be helping with my long an short term memory..hope that works out..also take L-threonate when ever i can..an coments on this would be great Dave..all the best!
Philip. BTW, I'm NOT a doctor. Haven't played on one on TV either. So ...
What are you trying to do? If it is for sleep see my other videos on sleep. And you will not get anymore benefit from using more than 1,800 mg NAC per day. But spread out over the day because it is absorbed quickly.
Great and informative video.........I use NAC and have noticed better mood and energy. Could you please comment is it needs to be taken on an empty stomach or can it be taken with food?
NAC is water soluble so can be taken with or without food. But it should be used 3-times per day.
Hey David, thanks for the informative content. Can you please suggest nootropic stackthat can help in dopamine cycle & neuro systems recovery for smoking recovery ? I am planing on trying axstaxanthin 1mg + Citicoline & Piracteam (500 Mgeach) + acetyl l carnitine. I'm not sure if this combo is efficient. Can you pls suggest an efficient stack & its dosage ?
Thanks. Keep up the great work.
NAC is the best supplement to restore dysfunctional dopamine receptors.
I'm curious, what's changed with you? It's as though you've stumbled upon the right mix of supplements recently. I say recently but I only watch some of your videos and usually not in chronological order so it could have been some time back.
Been taking NAC for sometime, noticed at the 1000mg dose it starts to reduce bile , can tell from poop colour, so I personally stick to 500mg.
Thanks for your content , you've created an extremely useful library for everyone out here in internet land.
Subscribed!
Kasper, lots of practice and doing it over and over again..
Great info , could you please turn on the closed caption ? Thank you
Good idea. I'll see if I have that option available on this channel.
hello, could you make a video about DMSO ( Dimethylsulfoxide) and its use as a nootropic in mental illness
Eder, there is no clinical evidence that Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has any nootropic value.
Hi David,
With GlyNAC, when is the best time to take it before bed or in the morning? been taking GlyNac for over a month now taking it before bed but, still wake up 2 to 4 times a night no matter what time I sleep.
NAC is not considered a sleep supplement But Glycine on its own does help some with sleep. NAC affects dopamine which you need during the day. Not so much during the night. See my other videos on nootropics for sleep.
Thank you for this channel David.
Can NAC be taken with St John's Wort and Ashwagandha?
Should not be a problem.
Thanks for the informative content. Do you have any opinions on NACET?
Ty, supposedly N-Acetylcysteine Ethyl Ester is more bioavailable than plain old NAC. But I've been using "plain old NAC" 3-times per day for many years and it works for me. My attitude is why change something that ain't broke?!
Should NAC be taken with or without food and is it ok to take with a Collagen Peptide supplement?
NAC is highly water soluble do does not need to be taken with food. And it is not contraindicated with anything that I've come across.
Hey David, I was curious what you think of peptides?
Richard, is is hard to answer that question because a lot of the supplements I have reviewed are either peptides or are made naturally in our system from peptides.
is it better to take it with magnesium glycinate vs. plain glycine powder? I take two 600mg NAC 1st thing in morning and 2 hours after dinner.
Karla, NAC does not need anything extra to make it work better. It works just the way it is. I suggest adding a 3rd dose later in the day to get NAC's full benefit.
Thank you for this update. I have been looking into this. I'm already taking msm. Can I take NAC too? They are both sulphurs.
They may be both sulfur-based but are two very different supplements with very different benefits.
Can I give it to my cat. NAC has helped me deal with anxiety lately. I’ve been noticing my cat having some kinda of anxiety. Biting and pulling out his fir. Extra jumpy and Spooked over little things.. Do you have any experience with NAC in felines?
My findings seem to indicate it’s safe for them.
You need to ask your vet this question. I only deal with the human brain.
your download of "Secrets of the Optimized Brain" was not free from any of the listed sources.
Sam, not sure what links you tried but this one is definitely free: pulse.ly/byzli55oei
Why do some people say that NAC cause anhedonia and that it reduced the affectiveness of stimulants?
Who know. I have reviewed 102 individual nootropic supplements so far. And while we know how each works. some react differently to a supplement than the person next to them. There are some supplements that each one of us cannot use. NAC will not work for every person on this planet.
. . ✨ you did mention the best form of N Acetyl L Cysteine, is it the life extension type ?
I can’t remember exactly what you said but I did hear something similar on another channel . ➖thank you in advance for your reply . .
Several companies have started selling NAC again so get it from whomever you trust. Life Extension is the only company that kept on selling NAC even when banned by the FDA.
❤
Thank you for your presentation and wisdom.
Would NAC also destroy the intestinal lining therefore potentially disrupt the microbiome and help create leaky gut?
Why would it cause problems with your intestinal lining? There have been no reports of this.
@@NootropicsExpert Dr. William Davis in his book The Super Gut mentioned that NAC disrupts the intestinal lining mucus ( just like the mucus produced in the CF lungs) therefore increasing the chance of leaky gut.
Did the good doctor show any evidence of this? I mean real peer-reviewed clinical evidence and not just his opinion.
@@NootropicsExpert I think he did. Unfortunately I gave the book to one of my friends to read, therefore I can't give any references right now...but I surely remember NAC as being an intestinal lining mucus disruptor.
What about Acetyl L-Carnitine? Should I stop using it and use this one instead, or use them both?
Cormac, two very different supplements providing very different benefits.
I see alot of people commenting about NAC and anhedonia, is there any correlation?
Here is an animal study that shows NAC helped with anhedonia: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9548602/
I may have missed it if you covered it, but NAC needs glycine in equal amounts to keep from depleting glycine. It is sold as GLY-NAC.
I have not seen any clinical evidence that NAC supplementation depletes Glycine. If you find a peer-reviewed study that shows this I'll gladly update my review.
I have read that high dose thiamine like sulbutiamine also good for parkinson's disease. is it ok to combine it with NAC?
Absolutely you can combine the two.
@@NootropicsExpert Thank you
12:55 😂 😂 thanks for the mood boost
Welcome.😊
NAC gets up in the morning, starts my car, and walks my dog! It’s the best ever!!
Hi. Do you know whether NAC is able to help upregulate dopamine receptors to some degree? Thanks
Jordan, NAC helps restore dysfunctional dopamine receptors. It does not "upregulate" them.
What are your thoughts on NAC ethyl ester? I’ve heard it claims to cross the blood brain barrier. Is it more effective?
NAC by itself easily crosses the BBB. No need to complicate it.
Is it ok for N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and 5-htp to be taken together?
Yes
What's your take on ethyl ester NAC? 100mg/day enough with EE NAC?
I am only aware of the benefits of NAC which has been used successfully for decades including in the ER of hospitals.
I hear it's even more beneficial if combined with glycine. Is there some truth to it?
Not true. See my other comment in this thread.
I heard that if you take NAC too often it can increase the risk of cancer. Is that true?
I have seen zero evidence of this. Sounds like the type of rumor a big drug company would start to discourage people from using supplements.
Does NAC help Peripheral Neuropathy?
I've have a found a couple of studies showing NAC can help with neuropathy including this one: pulse.ly/jph3x3cftc
NAC makes me super itchy, any reasons why? Shoukd i discontinue use? I was only taking 600mg at night. Thank you
Check to see if you NAC supplement is pure and has nothing else added as "other ingredients". If it is pure then is sounds like NAC is the wrong supplement for you. It is sulfur-based and you could be having a negative reaction to sulfur.
is NAC the same as ACC effervescent tablets?
no
Can you take NAC if you are on blood thinners ? Ty.
Valeria, in rare cases NAC can cause low blood pressure. My only advice is to test it and see if that causes a problem for you. Or ask your doctor about this because NAC is well known within the medical community.
@@NootropicsExpert tysm for your response
NAC vs citicoline CDP choline?
No competition. They are two totally different supplements.
Had great results using NAC for 3 months, but now am finding its leaving me really low on energy / mood - anyone know anything about this problem, or what to do about it? I been awful, vile ill for decades and this has now almost disappeared- I can't go back to being like that, so don't see how I can stop using NAC. . . . .
Richard, NAC should not cause "low energy". Something else is causing it. If you used NAC for 3 months with no problem but suddenly you're feeling low energy, what has changed in the last couple of weeks?
Is nac safe for pregnant women?
You'll need to check with your doctor on that one. And she should know because NAC is well known in the medical community.
can I take it for gut problems? after Hpylori my gut is destroyed :(
See my video on this channel about a Leaky Brain because it also applies to your gut. There is no evidence however that NAC can help reduce H. Pylori. But you are likely Vitamin B12 deficient and you should not use nicotine of any kind because it can make matters worse.
I thought they banned it because it's good for us?
They tried to ban it because one of the drug companies claimed a patent from the early 1960's and wanted to make a prescription drug out of it.
What is the difference between NAC and L-cystine?
NAC can cross the blood-brain barrier better than plain L-Cysteine.
How much daily NAC is too much for zinc and copper status? ... Is 1G daily pushing this limit?
Anything over 1,500 mg per day. But you do not need any more than that anyway.
Can it be take with sulforaphane
Yes
@@NootropicsExpert at same time or should they be staggered, alternating times of day or different days , thanks for the content
No reason I can think of to stagger them.
So do u recommend 500mg every 8 hours while awake?
Mike, I recommend 500 mg NAC 3-times per day. Not necessarily 8 hours apart. Use NAC morning, noon, and later in the afternoon.
I love Nac, felt great on it but it stopped working after i upped my dose to 3 a day. Anyone know why that might happen?
The standard adult dosage for NAC is 500 mg 3-times per day. You may have been deficient in Glutathione. But once you built your levels back to normal I suggest keep in using NAC for maintenance.
I used to take capsules.
When I take NAC it upsets and burns my stomach
Ellen, you are likely reacting badly to sulfur. NAC is a sulfur-based compound. Sounds like the wrong supplement for you.
Dave
Please
Help
Jill, please share with us what the problem is first.
Can you take NAC while taking antidepressants and antipsychotics?
They are not contraindicated with NAC.
Lol..gotta get some copper into me too!
Philip, Zinc with low dose copper. 1.5 - 2 mg per day for copper.
How about GlyNac? Glycine + Nac???
NAC works well on its own. It does not need Glycine to do its job.
@@NootropicsExpert you see no benefit to taking Glycine or Taurine with NAC?
Both Glycine and Taurine provide their own nootropic benefits. See my review for each supplement on this channel. I'm sure combining either in a stack makes for good marketing. But I haven't seen any clinical evidence of combining them for a unique benefit.
I took capsule form for a week and from the start i got diarrhea, i stopped using it and after 5 days im still not fully healed from it. I did my research and not a lot of sources says about it and the numbers: 18% people can have diarrhea and up to 33% vomitting. Those are big numbers. It should be labeled as a drug not as supplement.
At 15:08 in the video above I stated "Very rarely can NAC cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. Even more rare are rashes, fever, headache, drowsiness, low blood pressure and liver problems."
Some people simply cannot use a supplement. But this varies from person to person. NAC works for "most" people. But not everyone.
But NAC is used in emergency rooms across the USA so I suppose you could consider that a "drug".
