Great video!
Where did you get those "universal strap" things?
No No No! Do NOT use your front axle as a lever. It’s made of an aluminum alloy and will bend or worse yet deform the threaded end. That will cause the axle to bind in the hub and the threaded hole in your fork. If you apply a small amount of grease the the treads of your axles and torque them to proper specs, they will never be a problem to remove. 😉
Taking a rock and doing the cave man and hitting the multitoll tool is probably safer
@@technikstein8974yes!
@@technikstein8974 just stand on the multitool to turn it. I do that to get my pedals off.
Don't over tighten full stop🤷🏼♂️😜
Doddy would scold you for this one
you can use a 27.5 tube in 29 and 26 as well :D no need for shortening
Sorry Blake, but using your soft alloy front axle as a lever is a stupid idea guaranteed to end up with a (even slightly) deformed thread and a long walk home. Even the slightest damage to the end of that axle and wheel won't be going back on.
BETTER hack for the universal inner tube: Always carry a 24" inner tube:
1) It works for every tyre size (the butyl rubber will expand all the way to 29" and beyond without an issue).
2) It's MUCH smaller and lighter than a 29" inner tube.
3) You don't have to fuss with folding and/or tying the tube to make it fit your tyre.
stretching a 24" inner tube onto a 29" rim sounds like a nightmare
@@artvandelay1720 Nah, it works perfectly. But if you like carrying a 29" butyl inner tube (which is the size and weight of a small coconut), by all means.
29" TPU tubes as a spare might be the optimal solution in terms of weight and size, but they are more expensive than 24" butyl tubes and they are only for one-time use. Meaning they won't go back to their original compact size once you fix your tubeless system, so you can't re-use them as a spare.
I do the same , 24 works just fine . I’ve done it plenty of times no issues. Just to get you down the trail and out it’s great , just inflate a bit and insert . Even had to ride out on super nar terrain and it held up great !
I don't want to trigger a Presta vs Schrader argument here, but with Schrader, you don't have to worry about bending the valve core altogether. I really don't see any benefit of a Presta valve on a MTB.
smaller hole in the rim + lighter
Voile straps are essential! I keep one with me at all times. Most of the time they are for holding down extraneous bits to my bike, but if you have a serious accident, they can double as a make shift tourniquet.
Tape your valve core to your brake hoses (along with a spare chain link) and then you'll always have a core, chain link and a length of tape with you!
brilliant. this will fix the issue of remembering you have it, and where you put it! Similar, I use cohesive bandage to bind a spare tube to the bottom triangle at the bottom bracket. better than straps since it prevents wiggling.
Yeah, No using an axle for leverage is a bodge!
Regarding valve cores. You can use the end of the chainbreaker on your multi-tool as a valve core remover/ installer tool.
if you get inner tube with removable valve core, you do not need extra valve core :)
2 in 1 hack! Nicely done 👍
I used 26" light weight tubes in my 29" tires for 10 years. 100 grams instead of 220 grams for a standard 29" tube
Interesting 🤔 What's fitting them like? Also do you get many punctures?
@@gmbn put enough air in to give it shape and then put it on the rim.
When I used them, only the occasional raspberry bush caused a flat. Easy to change and no mess. The first 29" tires were pretty heavy and combined with the tube weight they were very heavy. I run tubeless now. The only flats now are cuts.
27.5in tube fits both wheel sizes aswell what we always carry as great hack for mixed wheel sizes
Step one, know when it's righty tighty and lefty loosey, which can be confusing with pedals :)
pedals are simple... loosen towards the back of the bike, tighten towards the front.
I use nail clippers to cut zip ties flush
You can ususally increase leaverage by extending the tools and using those instead as the gripping point.
If you only use your multi tool to tighten the axle, you'll always have enough leverage to remove it.
Love your Content Blake, You are truely amazing and I love all the other versions of Blake that you show us! Keep at it PLEASE! Would love to see some more Fatbike stuff from you. Maybe a review of the new Canyon rigid Carbon fat bikes.
Nice one Blake, thanks ⭐️ PS I like to burn the sharp zip tie edges with a lighter (if there’s one available)
I usually keep a chain quick link in the air side top cap of my fork. I've found a Fox 38 has plenty of room.
Interesting, does it rattle at all?
@@gmbn Not a bit. Shimano fits a tiny bit better than SRAM though. Does this mean I win Hacks & Bodges this week? 😂
Oh, and a valve core fits inside too. I just added a couple of earplugs to stop any rattling noise.
Send in some photos of it here and you could win! 🤘 upload.gmbn.com/
Great tips 👌 👍
Thanks for watching 👍
Zip ties in the crank is genius… cheers
No problem! 👍
I would have a pretty interesting Video Idea that I have not found on the web so far. Could you compare how a local rider would compare to a provider on the locals fav home trail, and how many runs the pro would need to save the time up to the local rider on the track?
cable ties in the fork steerer :D still tight in there and much more roomier
Whist agree there is risk of damage to the front axle.. I’d question the level of over tightening of the rear axle if that’s a massive issue!
Let’s not forget Blake is not saying use it in the garage as part of your tool box! This is emergency get you home or off the mountain stuff not get you to the car park at the bike park! 😂
If you need more force on a wrench, just stand on it. That's how I get my pedals off the crank.
I have a 6mm allen ziptied inside the rear triangle or under the downtube depends on the bike.
My axles are just fine 😂
How do you cut the zip ties to use the tools? 🤔
I tell everyone I know, Zipties are my #1 "fix" item to carry. I've fixed broken shifters, seats, handle bars and more with zipties. Use a dab of ant-seize on axle bolts.
The best thing is trying to undo the stuck axle, it finally starts to move but then you realise that it's the metal giving way.... and you're rounding the bolt.
Or you realize you were turning it the wrong way and just cinched it even tighter.
How to undo axle on trail?
Simple!
I ride on 2012 Trek XC, so my QR axles not make any problems. Never ;)
;)
For through-axle individuals - Buy torque wrench, tight axle only to spec (usually 9-11Nm), undo this is easy with multi tool. Slightly "greasing" thread before installation helps with corrosion and protect from sieze.
A 27.5 tube will fit on a 29. The width being big enough is more important than the diameter.
You were tightening the rear axel. HA!
Hmm not sure I'd want to use my front axle as they could easily deform I imagine
Especially as they are made of cheese
@@Usual_Goon mine basically are
Good Hacks!!
Thank you! 🙏
nice video, what can i do if my rim has a big dent but i´m to broke to buy a new one? #askGMBNtech

You don't really need to reduce the tube like that. Diameterwise they fit pretty much in any combination, you can even read it printed on the tube itself, it's the width that matter. So having a 26+ would be a better option than regular 29
Duct tape. Shoelaces. Used inner tubes can be very useful.
One time i used pine resin for fixing a flat tire.
Straight from the tree? Or do you carry around pine resin? 🌲
Using the front axel like that made me cringe... it should be treated as option of last resort, as if its sooo tight you can't undo it with the tool alone then there is a high chance of damaging your front axel in the process... and then potentially your fork lower leg when you try and put it back in with its deformed threads!
6:49 Yo dawg I heard you like multi tools so we put a multitool on your multitool so you can tighten your multitool to maintain your other multitool and then tighten the other multitool to maintain the first multitool and then… something.
It's like using the mini WD-40 cans to help open the big WD-40 cans if the lid gets stuck 😂
Why have you over tightened the axle, firs step before even trying to get you front axle out for leverage, try going the correct loosy direction, youn know some countries lefty loosy righty tighty. Apparently Blake forgot or did it for the shot so it didn't look like it came undone to easily.
Hang on need to get stick
seriously? you will break the axis this way or at least deform it. Aluminum axle and steel hexagon. It would be better not to shoot such life hacks, but seriously
First hack is a NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
Why don't u use a bicycle saddle bag?
zzzZZZzzz...
They can sometimes be rattly 🪇 Also clearance can sometimes be an issue on full suspension 🤘
Wow these bots are weird
They are! We're doing our best to keep them off our videos 🤘
Thank god lmao
