The homeless Trooper (Clone veteran) was from 501st Clone Battalion, which was Anakin's. Later on 501st Clone Battalion was transformed into 501st Legion - call name "Vader's fist". The director of the show wanted to draw a parallel - how Anakin as a jedi would have never allowed this, but Vader as a sith lord would.

Average audience won't make the connection to the 501st and Anakin's connection to them, it was only expanded on in the Animated series and literature.

I heard you ask "how are they related" referencing Luke and Owen and haven't seen anyone comment on it yet so...
Owen Lars is Anakin's step brother, we learned in one of the prequals that Anakin's mother was sold to a moisture farmer Cliegg (I cheated and used the wiki for the name) and that he "actually married her". Cliegg already had a son Owen when Anakin's mother married him so Owen is Luke and Leah's uncle although not by blood.

That's why the song is called "Duel of Fates" They were fighting over the fate of young Anakin. If Qui-Gon hadn't died, his fate would have been very different. To Anakin, Qui-Gon was going to be like a father. Kenobi was more like a brother, a brother who didn't know how to give Anakin what he needed, and often restricted Anakin's movements in order to control him, including stopping Anakin from going to save his mother based on his premonition. (Anakin's unique force ability was to see the future, and ability that he became shut off from after Mustafar) Anakin, deep down, blamed Kenobi for his mother's death.
Dave Filoni gave a beautiful explanation in a round table discussion, to this effect. He's the new George.

Not a huge Star Wars fans but appreciate the world building. As a casual viewer I'm quite enjoying the show. Go in with zero expectations, and it's almost great. It's pretty surreal seeing Vader and Obi-Wan in scenes together again. And it's super bizarre contrasting the world from Phantom Menace to this. The tonal difference is stark, and that's interesting to see on screen.

"It's hard, as an audience member, watching someone get set up..."
This is a lot like Alfred Hitchcock's saying, "There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it." The audience sees what's happening, and knows the outcome in a way the characters don't, yet are powerless to cause any change. We are forced to wait and see if the characters can get out of the situation they're unwittingly walking into.
The" friend who died long ago" that Leia reminds him of could be Padme, but could also be Satine Kryze, Obi-Wan's not-quite-girlfriend from Mandalore, that we were introduced to in the Clone Wars cartoon.

@@SolidSnake8295 I agree. All these reactors get pushed into watching in release order. NONE of the reactors are surprised by Annakin’s turn in episode 3, they only get surprised by how dark he goes. Also, everyone that watches in release order spends the entire prequel trilogy trying to figure out who the emperor is. Revenge of the Sith is already great but it’s even more of a shocker if you watch chronologically. If you watch them chronologically the only surprise you really lose is Luke & Leiah being siblings.

You noticed C-3PO and commented about him being at every movie, but… did you see R2? He’s at the same place, you can see him at other talked from that place, when Bail tells his wife Leia escaped after she talked to her.
Fun fact: the girl that offers him some drugs and talks about not going to find her daughter if she was brought there: is actually his daughter; she’s Ewan McGregor’s daughter.
At that very same place, the old clone trooper begging for money is that: a clone trooper, and all clone troopers come from the same guy: Jango Fett, and of course the principal clone is the one Jango was raising as his son: Boba Fett, and those clonetroopers, when seen without a helmet or when Boba Fett becomes old (now we see him at both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett) are the same actor: Temuera Morrison, so it’s a cameo from that actor. In fact the blue marks on his armor indicate that he was part of the 501 legion, the very one Anakin, already as Vader, when just turned the dark side, we’re at his orders and went to the Jedi temple to take down the Jedis at that place. It’s an irony and sad to see Obi-Wan giving some money to an old clone trooper that was actually among those that were under ANAKIN’S orders and attacked the Jedi temple, and now that clone trooper is so old and beaten (remember they were genetically modified from the original making them to grow faster so it wouldn’t take that much time for them to become
useful soldiers, that’s the reason for him to look old and beaten, so he, just like any other clonetroopers were replaced by the stormtroopers.

Since Obi-Wan actually plays before The Mandalorian in the timeline, it even makes sense to watch this series first.
Obi-Wan knew Anakin was Vader. He saw the video in Episode 3 with Anakin kneeling before Palpatine. But he left him behind on Mustafar, dismembered, fatally wounded and burnt. For him, Anakin was dead.
And after that he was hiding for ten years on Tatooine as a hermit. A remote planet, with just some larger cities. Most people may never have heard of or seen Darth Vader at all. For them it were the Inquisitors who instigated fear and terror.
Not even the senate seems to have known at that point Vader was alive, since Bail Organa didn't mention him to Obi-Wan when pleading for help.

Love your perspective on what might have happened to Anakin if Qui Gon survived. Props to whoever mentioned the true meaning of "Duel of the Fates" earlier in the comments
As far as Vader goes, it would make sense why Obi doesn't know who he is. As far as Obi is concerned, he left Anakin to die. No one except Palpatine and the clones that were with him, witnessed Anakin survive. To the general public, Vader is mostly a feared myth, and Anakin was declared dead from Order 66. Vader is rarely seen and most who meet him, don't survive. Palpatine is really the main public face of the Empire. So while Obi may have heard whispers of Vader at some point, he had no reason to think it was Anakin. Some people (like Tarkin) who knew Anakin from before and spent time with Vader, eventually did deduce that Anakin and Vader were the same person. But to the average person, he was a terrifying ghost story.
Also, like many here have said: I think you would love the Star Wars animated shows (Clone Wars and Rebels). They are wonderful (for the most part) and really add a lot to so many of our favorite characters!
