This is a percussionist. Those of us who were trained know how to do all of this. Most rock drummers only learn to play the kit and pick up other stuff as they are professional and have the time and money to do so.
Copeland is still talented and a wonderful musician for creating this piece and art.

Killer percussionist indeed. The guy can randomly slip in and out of Caribbean style polyrhythms like it's nothing at all, just second nature. Most groups that incorporate that type of temporal complexity would have multiple players carry it out, but Copeland? He's got it completely under control by himself. I've been a minor percussionist for around five decades and there's no way I could pull that off for more than a short fill on my very best days.

Perfect example of why Sting ultimately did the right thing by cutting Stewart and Andy into the songwriting royalties for the Police back catalogue, as none of those wonderful Police songs would have been what they were without their brilliant contributions. I mean, it should have happened in the first place, but better late than never.

Beyond the obvious playing skill, the thing that most strikes me about this is how creative his arrangement is. Going from cymbals/crotales to timpani, starting and ending with gong, adding the drum set at the appropriate place... just an amazing way of conceptualizing the song for live performance.

I know that there were sometimes tensions within the band, but I hope Sting and Andy appreciate the wild inventiveness, fascination, brilliance and professionalism that you brought to the percussion component of The Police. Lord knows I appreciate it. When you return to that tightly tuned snare near the end is sublime. Philly Joe Jones, Sammy Davis Jr., Harvey Mason, Billy Cobham, Stewart Copeland - my all time favorite drummers and influences, in different ways.
(Sammy was a top notch tap dancer and also played the drums really well.) But Stewart Copeland always stood out for me. Listening to him drumming with The Police was and still is very very humbling. When I was a teen I simply couldn't even understand what he was playing - it was so creative, unpredictable and virtuoso. And tight, tight, tight. I was listening to and playing almost exclusively bebop/jazz/funk at the time. The Police was the only rock band whose music really, really fascinated me. (And Stewart's drumming scared me. How could anyone be this good? So unbound from convention? So steeped in dub?) Their music is still so musically rich and sonically exciting. One of the best bands ever, no question. (The only thing I disliked were some of the guitar solos, hah!)
Wrapped Around Your Finger is and remains a masterpiece of music and one of my all time favorite tracks. It immediately immerses my mind in an archetypal story kind of mode.
Thank you for the music and all the emotions.

Back when I was a teenager in the 80's I was becoming a drummer I was raised on a lot of heavy metal and hard rock. I guess at the time I wanted to party and just play loud and fast. At the time the Police were everywhere with this album and on the radio and MTV. As I got older I became exposed to different styles and time signatures. Neil Peart, Alex Van Halen, and Dave Lombardo were my favorite drummers. I knew who the Police were and some of their songs but I guess I wanted to hear loud distorted guitars, bass, and heavy drums. I always liked this song and it always stuck in my head. Now years later and having listened to all different kinds of music and watching different drummers on CZcams I have newfound respect for Stewart Copeland's drumming and I really like how explains what he's playing and his approach to the drums. He seems like he's a nice guy and respectful of other drummers in his interviews. Anyway, I love this song and his playing on it. 🥁

Just incredible ✝️🙏🙏🙏 an absolutely amazing drummer, musician, innovator and as Ginger Baker himself would say! You got to have fucking TIME!! Coming from the legendary Ruth's of JAZZ ginger had it and Stuart has bags of it!! Both Ginger and Stuart had alongside Jazz, heavy influences in African beats which shines effortlessly through their drumming, alongside so many different styles, with genius and class, perfection and time 🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🙏✝️

I am very moved by this video - it is beautiful music to start with, played by highly accomplished musicians which makes it pleasant to let wash through me. But to see Stewart… dance? The set around him is the body, and he is the blood, the heart, it is so uplifting. Watching an artist live their art like this is incredibly uplifting to me. Thank you!

To call Stewart Copeland a mere drummer is a disservice... He is a master percussionist AND multi instrumentalist and composer. There is not a single instrument on that stage that he cannot play to a highly professional level. He is a prodigous PURE musician.

I played timpani all throughout high school and college in my schools' symphonic bands. Those days are long gone and I haven't played in years, but I still like seeing rock drummers incorporate them into their playing. Stewart does an excellent job making use of timpani in the choruses. I've watched this video about four times since stumbling upon it this week.
