Lyrics:
You consider me the young apprentice
Caught between the Scylla and Charibdis
Hypnotized by you if I should linger
Staring at the ring around your finger
I have only come here seeking knowledge
Things they would not teach me of in college
I can see the destiny you sold
Turn into a shining band of gold
I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger
Mephistopheles is not your name
But I know what you're up to just the same
I will listen hard to your tuition
And you will see it come to its fruition
I'll be wrapped around your finger
I'll be wrapped around your finger
Devil and the deep blue sea behind me
Vanish in the air you'll never find me
I will turn your flesh to alabaster
When you find your servant is your master
And you'll be wrapped around my finger

Mephistopholes
I am and I was back in the early 80's too, I remember listening to this on my dad's old motorola B100W tube stereo that we had in the hallway of our farm house growing up. I used to listen to that radio alot when I was very young. That radio always had awesome base sound and was just good sounding radio all around.
Who's just listening because y'all have good taste in music?
Just taking a stroll down memory lane
Me!
I see what you're doing and I love it.
I just watched a live performance of this song from the reunion tour. I came here to hear the studio version.
They're both great, but I'm partial to the live performance because Stewart goes all out on all his percussive toys.

An incredible change of power. It went from “I’ll be wrapped around your finger” to “you’ll be wrapped around my finger”. When I found the true message of the song, it just hit so much harder. Truly incredible.

They are seriously underrated. Just as good as any other great band from the 80s but rarely mentioned among them.

@@matthewb9955 The Police were actually one of the biggest grossing bands in the 80s. They weren't even in the "just as good as any other band" club they were in a league of their own both in live ticket sales and income which is why they aren't mentioned among the others; they are not comparable, particularly when the musicianship in the 80s was on the decline due to the increased use of sampling and drum machines and less of a need for actual talent.

63 and feel the same. Wondering what has happened. At least it easily accessible today to revisit.
Comedian and Carpenter Adam Carolla built this set back in the day during his salad days.
From a songwriting perspective, this is a masterclass in dynamics. Each of the three masters up their game in the 3rd verse, building the song to a crescendo that’s essentially unmatched in popular music. It’s not about volume. It’s not about tempo - but it is (as Jeff Porcaro would say) about “lope.” The song leaps ahead in the third verse - starting the with bass line, under the “Devil and the deep blue sea behind me” lyric - that’s a perfect “on ramp” to what’s about to come. Stewart plays hi-hat and rim clicks up to this point, but then erupts with tasty share fills, kick drum and ride cymbal (on the chorus) that elevates the song. Andy’s (added) guitar part sounds like an alarm blaring: it’s subtle, but it’s a great guitar “hook” alerting listeners to the upcoming chorus. And the lyrics leading into the third chorus are among Sting’s best (and that’s saying something): “I will turn your face to alabaster: when you'll find your servant is your master: you'll be wrapped around MY finger.” What a brilliant twist! The whole song comes alive, with each musician playing an equal part in building the dynamics. This is how songs can, and should “move”. It’s not quantized. It’s not even about tempo. It’s about chops, mastery of instruments, and songwriting. Thank you Sting, Andy and Stewart.

I always get this vivid image of the former master in a dark room, with the servant's voice booming from all directions, taunting him, saying "You'll never find me!" And then he strikes in a flash of light.

There is a reason for this, you can't outrun the devil and the deal you made. You think you can, so sting wrote it in hopes he was more powerful and could leave it all behind. You cannot, the song puts a spell like most that's why it is magic, evil and powerful. It's why we listen over and over. Look at the most repeated section on the CZcams line..it starts at 3:18

Man bro...One of the dopest songs ever!!!!
there's just something about this song/video...magic
I am 19 right now and I have decided that if I get married , I would propose using this song since it's so perfect
🧡🧡
Fucking love it when the guitar changes and the drums kick in towards the end, pure musical energy, love it
That moment, exactly
Same!
If you listen closely, this is the moment when the lyrics change too. It changes from him being the guy running for her (I'll be wrapped...), to the guy becoming the "master", letting go (You'll be wrapped...) and reclaiming his power. Even the listener feels the shift in feelings!
Yeah, Copeland had such a killer snare sound, just cuts through and rocks the whole tune.
Called the "bridge" musical term....and yes.
Stewart Copeland’s drumming is insanely perfect in this song!!
Dude is one of the top 10 drummers in the world.
i play this as a cover on my roland electronic drum klt... yeah Copeland's drumming style is unique to itself...he copied no one with his signature sound, which I find refreshing!
Love how he just holds out on that snare. Dynamics!
My favorite drummer
You can say he was inspired by a lot of reggae drummers like Carlton Barret, Sly Dunbar and more. Reggae drummers play in that style.
Moneybag yo killed this song
Old is Gold❤
Listening to this during Coronavirus 2020. Love and peace to all
