- The Police playing in Paris, Theatre de l'Empire, France on 1979.12.03. Television programme called "Chorus". The video's status can change, if the policies chosen by the content owners change.
Sting - leading vocals, bass guitar
Andy Summers - guitar
Stewart Copeland - drums - Hudba
Love Stewart and Sting, but I've always especially admired Andy Summers. There's a HUGE amount of space in a trio for a guitarist to use, and Andy - like Alex in Rush - always put exactly the right amount of subtly blended stuff in precisely the right spot to make the songs work. Clever guy. 🙂
The Police and Rush were listening closely to each other's progression around this time, especially Peart and Copeland
Exactly, I've Sting with various incarnations of touring bands and Dom Miller playing guitar. No doubt Miller is a fine guitarist but there is only one guitarist that can achieve the tonality and dynamic that the Police employ.
Fair but one of the worst soloists ever
@@dystopian.. It was minimalism in the 80's. Not a shred fest like nowadays. These were artists, with the certain "Je ne sais que" in there music 🎶. If you're a painter or graphic artist, even a photographer, then you would understand Tonal Tapestry in painting 🖌️🎨 with sounds. Sting is the real Genius in these songs. He wrote the music, mostly. Sting is the genius Songwriter, not Andy so much. 👍
@@kentrow7010 fantastic band. A trained monkey could do a more coherent solo. Have a great day
Andy Summers is possibly the most underrated guitarist in rock history. Not sure why. Maybe because Sting carved out a hugely successful solo career and Andy just wanted to play. Whatever, he is up there with greats imho.
It’s partly because Andy is as minimalist in his style and totally served the song. Understated
Unlike a lot of flashy guitarists, Andy always serves the song in a minimalist but very inventive way. Why people are more impressed with fast, overplaying is beyond me. Andy is one of the greats.
@@richardfairlamb9728You SUMMARized SUMMERS perfectly…Genius and humble.
@@PeaceMonger I don't know man. I learned "Message In A Bottle" decades ago when I was younger and it was a very difficult and technical chord progression. Just saying.
There will never be another band like The Police. Only Stewart ,Sting, and Andy could create that music.
Yes, they are unique and have such depth of talent. So fun to see others appreciate what we all felt when we heard them.
@@elizabethfitzgerald8526 their music will allways be on our sides 😉⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🎸🎸🎸🎸🎼
I agree!
I told my kids recently that when I was growing up, every new Police album was always a day one buy.
Rush
It's no mystery as to why the Police became a worldwide phenomena, touring and playing in nearly every corner of the globe for the five or so years they were together; three talented musicians, each one bringing their unique gifts to each and every tune. They are a master class in how a trio works best ~ great songs, brilliantly arranged, with enough movement and space for the music to really breathe. The Police were a beautiful blend of rock, pop and reggae with jazz sensibilities tying it all together.
Stewart Copeland - one of the most unusual and interesting drummers to watch play
He combined reggae with jazz and rock patterns.
And he was a huge fan of fills.
Just a genius.
He is playing a reggae syncopation.
Unique...yes🥁👍🎶
In this band everybody was special. Copeland,Summers,And Sting . This whole music worked only this way
Love Copeland's playing. It's so unique, different, recognizable and musical. One of the finest drummers ever.
Double tap tump ta tump.......
COPELAND, COPELAND, COPELAND. OH YEAH COPELAND.
Simply Great 🎵🎼🎶😎👊

Andy Summers chorus still gives me chills
Indeed!
Your comment just remembered when as a kid I had chills listening to this song... but for me it was the verse's guitar :)
@@DavideDondiMusic I think he might be meaning the chorus effect on his guitar. :)
@@davidsanderson5918 oh! I think you're right :)
Andy's wet guitar sound actually comes from an Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress Flanger.
I absolutely love this song. One of The Police's best. All the parts are extremely well thought out. That guitar part is pure genius, the reggae drum part, the jumpy bass line, and on top Sting's marvellous vocals.
just summed up the brilliant chemistry of the POLICE ! and love the 360 degree camera work envelopes this whole musical beast so well !!! CHEERS!
stew ali i van say
This is probably their best song instrumentally. Each of their parts are completely unique and showcase their respective styles. One of the more underrated Police tracks.
I fully agree with you
@@pvtrichter88diango
Possibly my favourite ever Police song!?😮👍
The police is one of those bands where you take one member and everything falls apart. Andy, Sting and Stewart are all key members of the band. They're all amazing and I'm so glad my dad introduced me to The Police when I was a child. I absolutely love this band.
So much talent on one stage
Even if Sting had a bad night with his voice, It didn't matter. It didn't fucking matter. That's one of the reasons why I admire him.
Shure doesnt matter...but if it sound strange its because its the last song of the show..but it doesnt realy fucking matters....
The drumming The drumming The drumming. No wonder many of the worlds finest Jazz drummers hold Copeland in such high esteem for his "rock drumming" . It takes great musicians to carry off very successful Trio's. No keyboards or Brass section to hide behind with 3 up
Indeed just listen to that kick drum
Copeland wanted to play Punk. XDDD
elard ramirez, punk? Coming from Curved Air, a prog rock band? Maybe you're messing up. There is an interview where he tells how he formed the Police, after dividing a Curved Air gig with guitarist Rory Gallagher. He was so impressed that he decided to form a power trio ... and so the Police appeared.
@@Seventysongs XDDD I mean he have all that talent, but in the begining of the band he wanted to play Punk.
elard ramirez I understood, but in this interview he talked about the vibe of a power trio, regardless of style. Rory Gallagher did not play punk rock, so Coppeland felt the pressure of a power trio, left Curved Air and formed the Police, which had no punk in my ears ... so evidently he did not want to play punk rock or would have called other musicians .
Stewart Copeland probably had the best Hi-Hat cymbals in the history of drums from Regatta to half way into Ghost.
They're something else
This is what happens when you get 3 of the most talented people together in a band. The odds of that happening are 1 in a million, especially today.
Yup. So rare for a band to have chops yet still maintain a tasteful sound. So many talented musicians just shred all day and never think about actually writing good songs.
Andy starting at 3:06 woooshhhhhh! and plays the most beautiful chromatic chords after 3:45 - and the audience seems asleep! Stewart playing the hell out of the drums - one of the best live bands ever around!
In the presence of Sing and Stewart Andy tends to disappear, but make no mistake, he is the glue that holds them together!
One of their best songs. Sounds even better Live., great set. ❤️
FmeR...just seeing "79" makes me sad but lovingly nostalgic at the same time!
Andy Summers is truly a great great guitarist, a real musician, playing guitar is not about plying fast and fancy riffs though Andy can do that, its about creating music that resonates with the listeners soul. No one can do that as well as Andy, thanks for the music and happiness and joy you have brought to so many people. xxx.
that is so true, I say the same thing about the edge
He is not an ego-driven guitarist; he uses his instrument to create climates, to add colour to the music; in short, he uses the guitar harmonically, with minimalist riffs, when needed, which only respond to musical needs, not to, "ah, the girls are going to love it when it reach the last note close to the guitar's pickup."
Totally Agree
pretty subversive and challenging jazz chords and voicings.
Yes, Summers is a great musician. And Copeland a superb drummer, one of the best.
I was at that concert, 40 years ago (sigh)
21 years ago...........
God bless you!!!
@@fernandol1307 Fernando, 1979, 41 years ago...
40 years ago, you must be old....
Lucky you.
Police was great because of the freaking economy of means - just 3 young dudes, each with their incredible unique sound, pulling out all the stops. No slick session musicians, no studio tricks, no studied crossover schmaltz. Just rock n' roll - of a new kind.
I was 12 years old when Regatta de Blanc was released- I bought it on cassette tape and loved it to bits - this song being one of my favourites . Impressed with my taste now I’m 51 . What a great band.
Same age here. My first concert ever, The Police at Nassau Coliseum, the last show of their American Ghost In The Machine tour.
Same here
I look at all the comments, hardly any love for Sting and I get it. However, he is the leader and songwriter. A brilliant one at that.
Sting lucked out with Andy and Stewart. One of the best guitarists ever plus a drummer who was one of the ten best of all time.
they all lucked out with each other..for you to say sting lucked out shows qhat kind of quality you must be as a musician...unbelievable
Sting was a jazz guy, Andy was a classic guitar player and Andy could do everything from punk to reggae .... as Sting said , rock was almost easy then ....
Sting is one of the most respected song writers, bass players and singers in the history of rock and roll. What they all three brought was unique, incredible and perfect. They were to rock and roll what celery, onions and carrots were to French cooking.
They lucked out with him also. Sting is an unbelievable musician, songwriter and singer.
my God what a band.
The performance and creativity from Stewart is just from another dimension.
That voice, so raw and beautiful at the same time. Then the songs, the drummer, the guitarist, the bassist, the whole package. The Police changed the way I thought about music and it was all for the better.
Never get tired of this jam
Who knew that a bass and a guitar and drums would become one of the best band's on the planet
The best 3 piece ever to grace the earth. Completely phenomenal in all areas.
They are ok. But no Rush.
Rush and primus are up there mate
@@bobcaygeon4533rush arent even top 3 lmao
@@thecolourrose9022 I think many would highly disagree with your conjecture there mate. ;)

there are high mountains, and then there is the mount everest; there are great bands and then there is the police.
Andy Summers .........Fantastic !!!!!!
Surely, the best three piece band with highly skilled individuals. Unique!!!
hey son
WILLIAM ALPHONSO the only ones that even close for cream and Rush that's about it. I would count the Jimi Hendrix experience but Jim he's in a class of his own
However, there is Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Rush, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush to mention a few.
edvinlaine Not forgetting Taste
Rush is the best buy I love The Police
The most amazing guitar arpeggio in Rock' story... Thanks Mr. Summers!
Remember first seeing the Police on countdown around 78' or 79' with the song "can't stand losing you" . Still going strong
The thing about The Police is that they were all brilliant musicians! Add into the mix astonishing songwriting by Sting and you have a band that were way more than the sum of their parts! Definitely in the top best 5 bands of all time!
I love how this was filmed. The circular pan, the slow zoom in...basically 3 angles, not too cutty. To me it's really effective and stands up to anything. Of course it's my favorite song too.
This is The Police at their best...
That guitar by Andy is sublime ❤
Absolutely…I reference this song and live video consistently…sublime indeed.
The dolly camera moving in the back makes this video something magical.
What a magnificent performance.
The quality is pretty good for being in 1979.
yes
sometimes people really cared about quality television back in those days and there were talented people working in sound and visuals. now it's basically just jools holland and he's shite lol
Playing a fretless bass alone is difficult. Sting's singing, playing the fretless bass and playing the Taurus pedals at the same time!
incredible
Sorry I don't understand why you say " alone ". I mean, he has the drum Rhythm to help him
And that's why he lives in a castle and we don't
Spot on mate. Sting is not only a brilliant singer, song writer and bass player. Does this all, while playing a frettless bass. Timing alone on this song with the improv and vocals is amazing and those who don't understand what's going on, it's awesome.
Geddy Lee does all that and also plays keyboards and guitar
.... just saying
I saw them on January 30 and 31, 1984 in Rome, a mystical experience.♥♥
Completely brilliant. 3 brilliant musicians in communication with each other. No other band can touch this.
The Police were an incredible band. No surprise they were as huge as they were!
The Police was a great musicians! Stewart Copeland is a beast on drums! Late 70's and early 80's beautiful years.
Thanks from Italy for this gem!
We loved them forty years ago, but really didn’t appreciate how good they were.
Another example of a trio of musicians who are each masters of their craft. Truly amazing to see.
One of the greatest power trio rock bands of all time. So privileged to have lived and enjoyed their music in their time.
WTF, what power, what energy, what voice, Sting at the time! Thanks for sharing!
4:07 The cherry on top of the cake: Psychedelic semitone descent from Andy and Sting!
Holly crap. What a trio!
It's all perfect: performance, technics, creativity, very personal styles and sound...all three of them.
I think only god was able to bring together these guys...
God or Miles Copeland.
such a melodically rhythmic band... great live band... no need for gimmicks... so solid
This band becomes bigger and more as time goes along. Only three people of unusual abilities. It's so good, it defies gravity.
There are not enough words to describe The Police, its too good to be True... amazing
Never will be a three piece like this EVER again!! Great full that they came together to create iconic rock music!!! 💯🎸🎼🔥🔥💃🏿💃🏿💃🏿
Sorry but .. I have no words to describe the uniqueness of the sound of the greatest band ever ...
EVER!
I love Stewart's get-up--Mickey Mouse t shirt, short shorts, and tube socks. It all suits his style of playing. This their best live version of this song.
Yeah Sting was a bass man, I know that Stuart Copland was a large part of song writing! Andy Summers was a jazz man also! The police were one of the best band's in the world!
Such musicianship. Where can you hear a band like this now? God, I miss them so much.
me too.......
Joseph Devlin best band ever!!!
Arjan Teeuwen my favourite band from the late 70s and early 80s and one of the all time greats.
Joseph Devlin yeah I miss the police too.. Since their reunion tour keep hoping for a last tour.. Love the police.. Three truly amazing musicians,,
Gotta be my favorite Police song. I remember seeing them live at the Budokan in 81. This vid makes me feel nostalgic and lucky.
The Police, for me, were especially the best in 1979/80. Love the Regatta de Blanc and Zenyatta Mondatta albums especially. Massive fan back then!
Le "riff arpège", la voie éraillée de Sting, la jolie cuisine de batterie de Coppeland préparant la montée insistante de la basse à 1'29, avant le solo de guitare, super morceau !
Oui
it's no coincidence that power trios seem to have the world's best drummers you could argue till the cows come home on who is better ,truth is they both listen to each others music Stewart Copeland is an incredible drummer
can you imagine rush without peart?
+Jim Carpenter I mean... Their first album, so yes I can imagine Rush without Peart. That being said, Peart and Copeland are two of the best, and it's no coincidence that their bands are too.
Just incredible. And Andy Summers says to a young Jools Holland on thei Police DVD in an early 80s MTV or BBC interview when they were recording on Montserrat "Drums are easy, anyone can play the drums."
No thanks, I'll take Summers' minimalist guitar over Malmsteen's wankery anytime.
LESS is more !! says Lester Moore quite obviously I made that up but yes Summers Yes That UMGOT steen whatever NO!!
This song stirs my soul!! Love the reggae sound!! So thankful I grew up with this amazing music!! Thanks Police!! 💖💖💖💫💫🔥🔥
Happy birthday, Andy Summers!
Yes stewart drives the ship...wonderful...
Cocktail Box just an incredibly great drummer
BIG YES..... on EVERY level, in EVERY way. I will always come back to this - vocal wise, bass - gorgeous Andy Summer's exemplar performance --- soaring above - below and in between xxx
Three incredible forces that came together and caught lightning in a bottle
Such a good band. Who wants to see the Police record a new album ? One of the very few bands that ended things at the height of their fame when there last album was great and they were still on top. I think it is time for the Police to record a new album. it's been a long enough break from them hating on each other. who wants to see them record a new album ?
What an awesome backshot of Stewart Copeland at 1:08..so much groove!
All the great Rockers know French and "parle Francais" when performing "en Paris:" Mick Jagger, Joe Strummer, and Sting. Musique d'Excellence, absolutement!"
🇫🇷🇬🇧🇺🇸
Sting a ecrit et chanté une chanson en français (J'aurais Toujours Faim De Toi)
As a guitarist... I watched this video... At 1:43 Andy switches from finger picking to rhythm and it is absolutely Seamlessly executed. Grabbing the pic out of his mouth, changing fingering positions and playing right on beat... It's perfect

I agree, Andy Summers is an amazing musician
Andy Summers, is not only a highly skilled and experienced musician; he's also a very learned one too...love the guy!
It's actually at 1:39, but there is a timing break in the song ...it's not so amazing...I do that all the time...Don't get me wrong, I love Andy, but I think you're over impressed with a fundamental skill.....happens many times in the song...all have a tempo break....D
guys they were terrific!! as we say in Rome "beccatevi sti spicci" ;)
Sting’s voice... wow!!
Always fascinated by a trio of musicians that sound like 4 or 5 on stage. Police, Rush, ZZ Top, etc. Something special about that.
It doesnt get much better than this!
I'm on a live Police jag the last couple of days, they were just so good and tight, love "em !
No time this time one of my favorite songs by the police
My by far most relevant work of this unique band , the first being one already very promising

Another classic jam by the police
This is one of my favourite songs of all time and I’m a big police fan. I was 12 when R D B came out and remember buying the vinyl and still have it now. Fantastic band Stuart Copland wow.
The gods of the modern music.
So rare to have a right-kitted drummer with such a powerful left hand. That’s Stewart Copeland’s secret weapon. What a drummer!
Unbelievable how 3 men can have such a splendid own sound
Best Police song for me too, wonderful writing and musicianship.
3 genius at work
This performance needs the Blu Ray treatment now!!! A&M are you listening?
The Police...The Best group. Great singing.
Certainly Rush is an amazing three-piece, but since Geddy was so into synthesizers and the fill it created, with all due respect to Rush, the Police were stripped and raw and still larger than life. So for me, in the arena of rock and roll, Sting, Andy, and Stewart reign.
The Police had a huge influence on Rush, you can hear it on Rush's 80s albums. New World Man completely sounded like The Police, and I'm sure it was intentional.
brilliant song. guitar riff on the verse is superb. andy summers wasn't much at solo's but fuck, his rhythm playing is some of the best I've heard. one of England's finest guitarists. love his playing. that goes for all of the police. I know Copeland is a yank but he's a honoury Englishman. one of our very best bands.
really!! Andy is one of the best soloists in rock history
Nick Godfrey his solos were usually very short (Sting wanted it that way) but they were awesome. Listen to driven to tears or bombs away as good examples.
for that time and the style the police were going for solos were not the main focus of the guitar player. the whole new wave movement was coming into effect, and that was def not a big solo guitar genre.
Nick Godfrey From what I have read, Sting didn’t want Andy to do long solos, as that was associated with the more old-fashioned rock bands like Led Zeppelin, and Sting thought it was out of keeping with the Police’s supposedly punk style.
Yeah, Andy can solo like no other, and that includes Clapton, Beck, Page, whomever you want to name. He didn't do much soloing in the Police by design, as others have pointed out. They were trying to break with the recent past (60s) when long, flamboyant solos were the rage. Pick up one of Andy's solo albums since the Police and you will see!
It is great to see this song played live. As OP mentions, it is interesting to watch and listen to Stuart's drumming. Such control, restraint and such a freakin' amazing groove! I wish I could say more but I'm not a drummer. Andy's guitar playing here is the icing on the cake too. Fingerpicking mostly but chopping chords with a pick during the chorus. Sting deserves kudos for writing such a great song. The Police on their A game.
Andy summer is so good and underrated
