Mankind has destroyed Mother Nature, through the raping and pillaging of the worlds natural resources. We worship Gods (Christian’s, Buddhist, muslims) , like the way they worshipped the poet, and in the end naturally it’s in our nature to destroy ourselves (we have weapons that could literally obliterate the planet with the push of a button) Just like the destroyed house at the end. It’s a basically about god (Javier bardem) and Mother Earth (Jennifer Lawrence) being this perfect couple. Then humanity comes in and god, being loving but somewhat obtuse, let’s them in and do what they want. Mother Earth does not like this. They ruin everything and basically never listen to her and do what they want. Eventually, a little baby that represents Christ gets involved and it almost immediately killed. Mother Earth is pissed so she’s goes nuclear and burns the house down to kill everyone because they don’t appreciate the planet they’re on. She dies and god is sad. Eventually, another Mother Earth is born who isn’t her and the cycle continues again.

For those who don't understand, Jennifer Laurence represents both Mother Nature and Mother Mary. Javier Bardem represent God (thus explaining their age gap). The book (I believe it was a novel) that Javier is writing is the Bible. The man who first came into the house is Adam and the woman is Eve. Cain and Abel are represented by their two sons. Jennifer represents Mother Mary because she gave birth to Jesus, whom the people immediately begin praising. Javier Bardem wishes to take their son in order to show the public his "son." Jennifer also represents Mother Nature by showing us how humans begin to enter the house and cause havoc. That one scene where random people start painting the house's wall is our way of demonstrating that we want to help the earth, even if mother nature (Jennifer) wants us to leave.

I feel like I just got Rickrolled into thinking I was going to see a psychological thriller about a woman's secretive husband and instead was given a confusing symbolic allegory on the Bible who's moral to me seems to be don't buy a big house in the country with Javier Bardem.

    • @lagatowolfwood
      @lagatowolfwood Před 6 lety +40

Mia Mindyourownbusiness - I did, from what the trailer suggests here it's a dark thriller perhaps dealing with an unspeakable secret held between Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris, and Javier Bardem and from his wife Jennifer Lawrence. A secret she's unfolding as the movie progresses. What I got instead was a deeply metaphorical story based on all creation and the world which I wish they would have just been up front about before walking in the theater. It was like framing 'The Shining' out to be a "feel good family drama about the challenges of raising a child with special needs." So that's why I say it's the marketing equivalent of walking into the theater hearing Rick Astley singing "Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down.."

Mia Mindyourownbusiness - that's a fair point, looking back on it while I initially got the impression they bought the house together beforehand it does make more sense that he owned the house before and she was then fixing it up. Still though, if Javier Bardem asks you to come to live with him in the country you should be sure to establish a visitor policy beforehand. :P

To guys who are hating, you just didn't get the movie.
The whole film is metaphor. It's about her as mother nature and him as God. He gave her the house that's supposed to be earth and she tends to make it beautiful. She told him she wanted to give it a life so he brings her Adam and Eve (the first two people). Then she's watching how her work is being Destroyed by so called humans. The ending Is about mother nature giving another and another chances to us people, who carry on destroying the earth over and over again. And the circle is not going to stop.
This was a very creative film with deep thoughts, I totally adored it!!

yeah except its blasphemous and takes biblical people in a different narration, character and intention. it has nothing to do with the truth. it shouldnt be linked to the bible, Christ etc. there's no such thing as "gaia mother nature". they've offended the Christian teachings of God creating the earth for humanity, the VIRGIN MARY bringing forth God incarnate;Christ, and ONLY GOD is the one offended and forgiving for what humans have decided to do with HIS creation and gives another chance for His mercy. I cant stand how these movies and directors butcher religion for their own fantacy and throw it out for people to eat it up. The fact anything offensive to people's religion is considered deep, new and artsy makes me sick.

It's because people can't handle being offended when they see something horrific like what happened with the baby in this film anymore. They instantly go "Nope. Worst film ever" without considering anything else about it. Not to mention the fact that a lot of people can't muster up a single brain cell to even decipher the symbolism in this film. Put not being able to handle being offended and the incapability to think into depth about what the movie could mean together and you get a lot of people that give films like this a bad rating.

In terms of the title: Mother!, I can only assume she is Bardem's muse and Lawrence's mother. Whether she's evil or not, let alone alive..too early to tell.

The whole movie is based on the fact that Jennifer Lawrence’s character or mother, is the first goddess and the man or HIM is god. They live peacefully before the first man which is what they call him comes to their door and kind of makes it his home too. Then after man of course comes women. They explain that they are there because they love the new book that HIM wrote, which many people believe to have been the bible. These people are supposed to be religious and love gods work. Throughout the whole movie it shows how mother wants the them (The humans) out of the house but HIM likes the attention and wants them to stay. Everybody knows what happens after that when the humans kill each other and a whole war goes on in the house. It’s supposed to show how the goddess or mother wants peace and only to be with her husband, but it also shows god being selfish and wanting for people to believe and worship him as a god. Mother ends up dying and her heart is what makes the day restart back to normal with a slightly different version of Mother coming to life. It also shows the same scene in the beginning of the movie which shows that the cycle just repeated as well. Many people think it’s supposed to show how everything was peaceful before Man or (Humans) came to gods home, (Earth) and destroyed it. All while mother, also referred to as a goddess or Mother Earth, wants to get rid of the humans, God or HIM wants them to stay and worship him. It’s a very deep movie that I didn’t understand at first but when I realized that it had to do with the bible and god I re-watched the movie and it all made sense.

Guys come on the brother killing the brother??that was Cain and able! Jennifer even says it’s „supposed to be a paradise“
It’s a 100% biblical. They were entering paradise/heaven and filled it with sin! Turned it into a Gomorrha. Then the poet had people praising him did horrible things and STILL he said they have to be forgiven.
    That’s pretty clear to me.
Masterpiece but def painful to watch.

Did they eat Jesus after giving birth to him in the Bible? Yes there is the eating of Christ and the blood of Christ and yes there is so much biblical imagery the anointing of the head too, oh wait what symbol was left on the heads? A reverse moon symbolizing the sign of cancer which in astrology represents family and tribe. Also the crescent moon also reminds me of a religious group entering our house right now. If you only saw the Christian elements I feel sorry for you, there is so, so , so much more to this story. But thanks for the Cain and able scene I don't know that story as well and totally missed that part but the story has so much raw primal ancient European imagery it got me researching ancient history and did come across Cain and Able in my research, that is a very interesting time I got the sense that around that time we had a truer sense of spirituality. What we have today is a re telling of that story that is modified, like this story is like a modified biblical story, but yeah there's way more to the story I saw the movie way more racial and about politics and immigration and a lot of European history, it was like how there were several black super hero movies but when black panther came out black people were like "This is how white people feel all the time" We have so many more white movies but they are so universal, this was so primal European esk after I was like so this is what black people sort of felt when they made black panther.

    Spoiler Alert:
So many people giving hate cause they dont get it. Cant you see that the character played by Javier is God, the Creator. Jennifer's character is mother nature. The house symbolise eaerth. Ed and Michelle are adam and eve. The child is jesus. The entire movie is retelling the bible. Great movie and great allegory.

Its not mother earth lol. Its Nature. The wrath of nature has also been shown several times in the movie as Jennifer starts screaming and the entire house (earth) is shaking. - People dont appreciate life as they should, instead they commit crimes and seek forgiveness, which is punished by nature. (Burning down the house destroying all humanity in the movie).
