  • Witcher MMO Is A Bad Idea. Do you want a witcher mmo? is a witcher mmo needed? In today's video I talk about the possibility of a witcher mmo and why I think a witcher mmo wouldn't work.

I've always thought of the Witcher as a strictly single player experience due to the rich story, the type of world it is and the well defined characters. An MMO where there's just players running around with their ridiculous looking armour and doing emotes would ruin the atmosphere of the Witcher. I do like the idea of different main characters or more locations to explore but we'll probably get that with Witcher 4/Polaris

Me personally, when I had finally played Witcher 3 two years ago I actually thought of how good a Witcher MMO could be, given I imagined it'd be something like ESO mixed with GW2 or SWTOR or AoC since that's actually how Witcher 3 almost felt to me at the time.

The word you were looking for is Dark Fantasy
Tho you could have other factions for character creation such as Sorcerer/Sorceress, Druid, Medic, Bard, various clans, apart from Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes and human Kingdoms

    Nice video, and I agree.
By the way, while on the topic of single-player Witcher games, what are your thoughts on the whole "create your own character" Witcher games suggestion (sort of like Bioware did with Dragon Age & Mass Effect games)? And do you think Witcher could work with that new formula or is it better to stick to "scripted" main characters?
Might be an interesting topic to explore for your next video; positives and negatives for both, and the viability as a whole, and preference you have etc.

I feel like if they were going to do that it would be really cool to choose your witcher school and all the players would come from different schools of the one they chose. You could make it to where other races and women could be Witchers also. I would love for a Witcher knights faction too in the future but I doubt it would ever happen. Gnomes are a race in the Witcher but we’ve never seen them in the games. Gnomes and the Vran are actually the oldest races on the continent. Gnomes are still around and are the best smiths in the Witcher universe even better than dwarves. Vran are too in small numbers in deep hidden caverns throughout the world supposedly.

Gerorge. First of all gotta thank ya for making these videos. I didnt know about the witcher universe till the netflix show and your channel really helped me "dive off the deep end" with it.
But I think a Witcher MMO would absolutely be amazing. I see your points about the customization aspect. But to be frank, if i wanna play a bloodthirsty Sith Lord. Imma go play SWTOR. Or if I wanna be a werewolf thingy. Ill go play WoW. Sometimes theres such a thing as "too much customization" and some of these games go bat nuts crazy about it. And overwhelm the player with having too many options. There maybe a limited set of "races" to play. But if they overload with cosmetics (saints row style) that could easily make up for it.
As for Story stuff goes. In order to protect Geralts time. It could be based before Geralt was "Prime Time" if that makes sense.
Having an awesome, dark and gruesome universe to play through with friends with be super exciting. While still having that dame level of excitement with single player games.

Honestly, it COULD work if it functions a little like how Genshin Impact does. Like, it sounds strange, but hear me out!
Make it primarily a single player game, but you can enter other people's "worlds" to help them with particularly hard monsters or contracts if they put out a call for it on a board. But otherwise, you'd be on your own with no player interaction. You can choose to toggle this setting off and have the full single player experience or keep it on so when you look at a board, you can help other players in their games, as well as explore the continent with them for a time to help them find hard to find chests or loot.
Genshin is a primarily Single player game, but you can invite or ask to join other players worlds to gather materials, help with Domains and Overworld bosses, and helping them complete puzzles and challenges and finding chests. But if you just want to quietly play alone, you can turn Co-op off and turn it back on at your leisure. It's not necessary to enjoy the game, it's just an enhancer. But it makes it fun for you and your friends to enjoy a more personalized experience together.

i would take eso and swtor as examples to follow ESO started from the elder scrolls a totally single player series, yet they manage to drive the open world and continent for exploration without feeling borning, SWTOR is really old but if theres one thing i can say its basiclly a single player mmo, you can experience the entire amazing story and most of the game as a single player and bearly need to interact with people to finish content

A MMO ? Clearly not. However, I think like a 2-3 multiplayer game could be a nice idea. Yes, i would probably break the story a bit but imagine if for example you play a character in a group and when (an)other(s) player(s) join(s) the game, he would replace the basic I.A.
In this case, I think it could be a great thing as it would reduce the feeling of being all alone in the world and also allow multiplayer without much incoherences.
One last thing and example: if the scenario drives away some of the followers that can be players, the player associated with this character is then put apart or unavailable to join and even spectating until the host reaches a point where characters are all gathered again.
Edit: I sware this one is the last thing but maybe a multiplayer like in Elden Ring (it still have to be improved a bit though) can be the best option.

I have no problems with MMOs, as a massive Elder Scrolls fan, i got into and played ESO for several years until endgame and i can agree that ESO brought some interesting bits of new lore to the table, however it also did a lot of damage in my eyes to the mystique of Tamriel as a believable world, what i mainly felt with ESO it is that it makes Tamriel feel more like a theme park than anything else and overall i would not like the world of the Witcher go through that process at all.

I agree the Witcher universe doesn't suit an MMO. Having said that if there was one, there would need to be some serious balancing done in order to make all the playable races as equal as possible.
Witchers : At most a trainee witcher. (Be cool to pick your school as well for multiple starting locations)
Vampires : Higher Vampire is out of the question. A weaker variety of Bruxa would work and even then that's very strong.
Mage : Like Witcher, a young new Mage is the only option.
Humans : All the humans you listed suit.
Monster : I'm sure there would be a few sentient monsters that would be fairly balanced. Maybe a succubus or Warewolf but nothing too crazy.
Elves : Aen Elle and the Aen Seidhe can have different benefits/draw backs.
Each faction can have their own side quests specific to them. Witcher contracts for Witchers etc
(These are just the rambling thoughts of a madman on a toilet, so nothing I'm saying is by means perfect)

Imagine those quests, playing as party. However I don't think CDPR will ever think about idea of Witcher being MMO. 🤔

  • @ThePariahDark

The MMO formula as you describe it (with raids and dungeons and such) would indeed not quite work with TW. The formula would need to be re-invented, adjusted, and most triple A studios are too afraid to do that. Take the Vampire: The Masquerade MMO that was planned, which was leaning almost entirely on political things driven by players and not raids and dungeons. The Witcher MMO would need to be carefully planned, not just have the WoW structure be used with some Witcher names plastered over it.

Just like with ESO, I hate the MMO-ification of previously single player IPs. ESO has made great additions to the world of TES but, as a game, it doesn’t feel the same when you’re experiencing the same thing as 50 other people on screen who are more than likely in dumb skins or spamming emotes. I feel the same would happen with The Witcher which has even less concrete lore to work off of

mmos are notoriously hard to make, they require a lot of resources to be put into it and cdpr, as far as i know, made mostly sp games before, i at least hope that they're aware of how different kind of work it is. but if they did that, i guess that would bring some fans of the ip and maybe they would be successful, if they did a good enough work of it. still, even if they did, i'm personally just not interested in mmo, i never played eso, red dead online or any other multiplayer spinoff of the games i like, i doubt it would be different for witcher. i'd rather they just made another sp and not try to stick their fingers into multiple pies. yk how it goes, let's do an fps, they're popular and sell well, let's do an mmo, they are popular and sell well, ends up not putting enough actual attention into what brought ppl in in the first place.
sth that surprised me that you immediately went to imagine all those different races possibly available, while my first thought when hearing mmo witcher would be that everyone plays as a witcher, maybe from different schools etc. but then i guess the world would be just crawling with witchers, that would be weird too. but maybe some smaller sized co-op pve would work, when you need to team up with other witchers to hunt down particularly awful monsters. i know witchers rarely teamed up in canon, but maybe if it was set in the golden age when there was more of them, it would be more common.
