- This is the information no one is talking about! From the basics (how to interpret rod models) to advanced details on rod action and power, Matt is laying down everything you need to know to make educated decisions about fishing rods.
Fishing gear is expensive and the truth is, most anglers are guessing when they make a purchase. They have no idea if the rod they're buying will do what they need. But it doesn't have to be that way. Understanding ratings will take out all the guess work so you can begin making easy decisions.
Below you'll find links to many of our favorite rods, separated by technique. We've also included a few budget-minded rods as well. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item. In many cases the rods are available, in a few they're available for pre-order and expected to arrive in early Spring.

Congrats Matt. Would love to see you guys do a video on multipurpose rod setups. This would be great for kayak and bank fisherman. What rod/reel/line combo can be cross utilized for techniques X, Y (and maybe Z). Especially when it comes to being able to use the same line (if not going braid to various leaders). I can normally take 5 rods comfortably on my kayak and want to optimize the amount of techniques I can switch to. I'm just a weekend a warrior and not always up to date on lake conditions and patterns so want to be flexible on the water.
I think there's an old school video they did that is close to what you're looking for
The best fishing rod seminar ever!
I was just putting a cart together for new rods and happened to stumble upon this video. I don't know how I missed it as, I'm subscribed but, I'm glad I found it. This is probably the only CZcams video I've ever taken notes from lol
facts im taking notes as we speak lol
Congrats Matt! One of my favorite videos to this day is the swimbait rod action video from around 10 years ago. It's a great overview and explanation of rod action and flex in a blank. Sure, it's swimbait rods, but the idea words across the board.
I ALMOST replicated that video recently with a deeper dive into traditional rods. It may still happen 👍🏼
@@tacticalbassin That would be a great episode!
That would be awesome
Only us true OGs remember that one! 👊
@@tacticalbassin Looks like I opened a can of worms. You gotta do it now 😁 lol. Thanks for helping all of us become better anglers.
Congratulations Matt! I just picked up the nrx+ 821 yesterday and it is hands down worth every penny! Definitely appreciate all the knowledge you guys pass down! Everything is still frozen up here but your vids keep me sane until everything is thawed out! Im ready to go crack em in 22 💪🏽
Great to have you back and congrats. I always watch these longer videos a few times because there is so much in depth information. Very organized with your presentation.
This video couldn’t have showed up at a better time! Literally the other night I was looking at some rods y’all left in the video description and I was confused on which exactly to get as I didn’t know what exactly to look for. This video explained all of it wonderfully and is a great help to me. Thanks again guys for the awesome info!
Congrats Matt!!! Good to see ya back on the video. There’s nothing more rewarding to me than watching you children develop their personalities. The expression of accomplishment is awesome too!!!! My 4 are grown and I’m glad but I miss that a lot. It goes by fast brother cherish every second of it. Catch u soon!!
Thanks Matt, lots of great info from the best! Congrats on the new family addition man, may she bring you all lots of joy in the years ahead! Tight lines!
Thanks Matt for a great video. Congratulations on the new addition to the family. I have two daughters that grew up fishing with me. They're now 33 and 31 and always ask for fishing licenses for their Christmas presents.
And THIS was the tutorial I had been looking for since picking up fishing again 2 yrs. ago! THANK YOU! I now know which of my recently purchased rods need to be replaced! :) This is way better than my trial and error approach! :)
So thrilled all is well with the newbie & glad to have you back. I've missed the info & input
Congrats Matt, happy to see your happy and healthy as well as your little tactical addition.
Thanks for the save worthy tutorial - trusting rod mfg's has been a learning experience to say the least but this helps narrow down future purchases a little more.
Congrats on the new addition to the family! Matt, I've fished my entire life (30+ years) and never have I had a complete understanding of how actions work and the role they play. This video blew my mind needless to say and I thank you for always putting solid content out there. Only negative (to the bank account) from this video is now I need more rods! I have followed both you and Tim for almost 10 years and appreciate all you guys do, again thank you!
Dang Matt, that's how you gonna come back! Sick video another level. It's amazing that after 40 years of bass fishing, you could still teach me something. Thank you.
Congrats on the new baby! Thanks for all the great videos!
Congratulations on your new arrival, I learn a bunch on this video thank you and I appreciate you guys
The TB channel is always reading my mind on what content to post based on questions that go through my mind…why go anywhere else ha! Thank you gentlemen for all that you do.
Congratulations on the new addition to the family. Thanks for the video.
I love the tip on"deflection", I can't wait to get out there this spring! Thanks for all that you do.
Congratulations on the new baby man! Great video as always!
Beautiful background in todays video, good choice. Thanks for the information and thank to Tim for keeping things goin while you enjoyed your gift.
Congrats Matt and family!!
Welcome back!
Great explanation on the differences in the action and power on rods. Learned a couple things. Need more informational videos like this. They’re fantastic. Great video Matt! Should do a video on an explanation on reels gear ratio and size and which baits you like to throw on them
WOW! Thanks Matt. A tone of great info crammed into a small time frame!
Well I'm happy to see all of my rods in the budget options! Thanks again for the info boys! And congrats on the little one matt
Welcome back Matt 🙋🏼♂️. Great info thank you 👏
Awesome information!!!! I'm starting to build my rods now. This gives me ALOT of insight into what blanks to build on.
Congratulations Matt! Very timely video, looking to buy a couple of new rods. So, your explanation has really helped me out.
Congratulations on the new addition love the videos
Thanks Matt...Best video EVER!! Keep up the great work!
Hey Matt, great video as always! I’ve been watching the channel religiously for a year now and would love a detailed casting and spinning reel maintenance video. Specifically what you do and how often you perform maintenance on your reels to maximize lifespan. Thanks a bunch!!
This video cleared some things up for me, thanks Matt.
Congratulations on the baby! Great video!
Thank you Gary!
good to have you back
I love what you guys do. I’ve truly learned a lot because of you and Tim . Can’t wait to get my hands on some merch. Keep up the great work ✊💯
Matt it's great to see you again. Beautiful picture of the kids. Tim was awesome as usual. Now that the pleasantries are done, you really hit it out of the water (pun intended) with this video. I am just an amateur fisherman and you just enlightened me with a ton of knowledge. I have never had anyone explain to me the different types of rods and how they are used with certain type of lures. I am not stuck with one brand of rod and I am finally able to get rods that are somewhat over the $100 range. I will be watching this over again a couple of more times to make sure what I am wanting. By then I may have other questions and ask what type of rod I should be looking to use. Thanks again. You guys are awesome and I look forward to your next video.
Thanks for the video, congrats on the new baby. Thanks again welcome back.
Very good information in this video.
The lack of a industry standards of power and action for blanks can make for a frustrating day for new/er anglers.
Thanks for putting out this video and explaining some of this information.
Thanks
Jimmy
Awesome advice and thanks for the budget rod tip information I’m still on a budget right now and I’ll start using your advice thanks again love the videos
love everything you guys do for the sport!! have learned so much from you guys
congratulations with your family man, and also, Tim is the MVP for keeping the channel going and keeping the vids uploaded. lol.
Great video you all always do a great job thank you !
Excellent job in your descriptive overview. Best one on Rods to date in my opinion. 💯
Congratulations!!!! Thank you for the awesome videos! !!
Great video. Best explanation of rods I’ve come across so far. I’m finding i like moderate fast rods the best. Fishing from the bank I feel it’s the best all around action and then I just pick my power based on what weight lure I’m fishing.
You added excellent subtlety to my knowledge. Thank you.
Incredible breakdown on power and action. Super helpful.
Congrats on the new little girl Matt and thanks for this great video, definitely answered some questions I had on rods, keep up the great work, tight lines‼️
congrats on the new addition, matt. happy to hear the baby & momma are happy and healthy.
Always love these videos. They are super helpful for those just starting out or if you want to know what you should be using.
Great job Matt explaining the difference between the rods, very helpfull 🙂 Thanks for giving us your choices and the budget choices in your videos.
Congrats again on the new addition!
Congrats guys! Lovely little family you have
Congratulations on your new baby. May God bless and watch over you all. Much love and respect from Japan
love your videos and love the grind
Congrats Matt good to hear you are all well again
Awesome video! Very helpful. Thanks coach.
Congrats, from Galicia (Spain), for the new member of TacticalBassin family.
Great video, like always.
Matt congratulations to you and Cici on your new addition! Great vid, definitely need to find a good frog rod or figure out how to keep them on mine, lol
Megabass has some magic to their actions. The Typical bend test shows the marketed action, but they usually bend deeper than the test shows. Good Vid!! and congrats!!
Man I needed this video, I see Loomis rods used quite often and for the life of me I couldn't figure out the model number. Congratulations on your new baby girl enjoy her
Great info as always
Awesome awesome video!
Agree 100% wish I have this information years ago for reference points, not thousands of dollars later buying and selling lol
Hey Matt, Congrats on your new baby girl!!! Great video as always! Something you didn’t really talk about are the different warranties you get with different brands, guide replacement, etc. I know that is something I really care about. Maybe something for the next rod video?
Congratulations Matt!!
This might sound weird but man i love you Matt you have taught me so much its unreal
Crograts !That background view is amazing
This was a fantastic detailed orientation on rod sizes, powers, and models.
Congratulations on the birth of your daughter Matt. Also, I’m glad your back in good health. I also have an eclectic rod collection. We are fortunate today to have a great selection from many excellent manufacturers.
Good video Matt. Its 1 everyone should watch.
Congrats on the birth of your newest child! Thanks for the info. Def feel more able to make good choices for techniques.
That’s awesome congratulations man
Congratulations Matt and Ceci on the new edition! I have two small girls and they are a blessing. Can't wait for pre-spawn in a couple months, up here in snowy Massachusetts. Be well friends and thanks as always for the great content.
Thank you Matt!!
Always appreciate T.B vids, great info always, congrats on happy family, happy life.
Thank you!!
This is great advice that i most certainly will forget before spring time 😆. Congrats on the new baby 🍼. Hope all is well and the rest of the family stays covid 🆓. I would like to see a follow up video on best line type and strength is best for certain rod types/baits. Its such a hard thing for an amateur to figure out when overwhelmed by all the different rod types, line varieties, knots, and lures on the market. A generic rule of thumb would be an awesome go to chart for someone like me that tries to make things work without an abundance of rods. I try to buy at least one new rod a year to bridge the gap so this would be very helpful.
Enjoyed the video definitely helpful
Congrats on the addition to the Tactical family. God bless
Thanks Jeff!
Congratulations on the new baby. I miss my son being a baby.
I might be biased but I think Bailey is an awesome name. Congratulations and look forward to all the content to come.
Congratulations! All the best guys!
Thank you!
Congratulations on the keeper. Glad everyone is well.
Thanks Matt great topic. Please include topwater favorites.
Congratulations Matt!
congrats Matt!
Congratulations y’all!!
Super helpful video! Have y'all ever considered doing tiers for different types of lures from beginner too advanced? As a new angler it was tough to know what I could start with that required minimal skills and basic equipment.
Awesome video
Congrats on the baby! My wife and I just had our first on 1/26. Hopefully I'll have her fishing I'm a few years. 😂
just got done with covid as well not fun at all! very good video simplifying everything for the beginners!
Congratulations Matt.
Wow- that's a huge commitment to say you'll help us all find a specific rod in our price range- thanks guys. I'm looking for two rods in the 200-dollar range- a frog rod specifically for the heavy slop, I already have one for lighter cover or open water- and a swimbait rod large enough to throw like 5-6 inch mag drafts, s waver 168s, stuff in that 1-3-ounce range.
Do you have a brand preference? The swimbait rod will be really easy. Those listed baits don't need a dedicated swimbait rod. I actually prefer to throw them on a 7'2" - 7'9" Heavy with a bit slower tip... more like a jig rod than a swimbait rod.
Congratulations on y’alls daughters and thanks for the information on everything bass fishing. 👍
Thank you Bryan!
Congrats on the baby Matt!
Most of my rods are MHF. Some brands are different as far as Mod fast and fast, thanks for the video.
Congratulations on your daughter. Good to hear they and you are well. Oh yeah, thanks for the video. Haha.
Great video! I threw that Shower Blows so much I got that 7’2” Medium/Heavy SB Combat Stick. What an excellent rod with that moderate fast action. I found out it’s also a great swim jig rod. What’s your favorite swim jig rod? Congrats Matt!
Congratulations to you and CC, Matt...and good luck in the future with the TWO girls! J/K, I have two myself, and it was really great. So I've heard you mention the Denali Ryker rods...are they still making good rods and on your best budget rod list?
Great video Matt! And congrats on the baby! Wondering if you all have tried any favorite rods or googan baits I know if you liked them you would have told us about it but just wondering if they was terrible or just ok
Congrats on the new addition!! Have y’all ever tried castaway rods?
