How To Choose The Right Fishing Rod (Beginner To Advanced)

  • This is the information no one is talking about! From the basics (how to interpret rod models) to advanced details on rod action and power, Matt is laying down everything you need to know to make educated decisions about fishing rods.
    Fishing gear is expensive and the truth is, most anglers are guessing when they make a purchase. They have no idea if the rod they're buying will do what they need. But it doesn't have to be that way. Understanding ratings will take out all the guess work so you can begin making easy decisions.
    Below you'll find links to many of our favorite rods, separated by technique. We've also included a few budget-minded rods as well. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item. In many cases the rods are available, in a few they're available for pre-order and expected to arrive in early Spring.

    Congrats Matt. Would love to see you guys do a video on multipurpose rod setups. This would be great for kayak and bank fisherman. What rod/reel/line combo can be cross utilized for techniques X, Y (and maybe Z). Especially when it comes to being able to use the same line (if not going braid to various leaders). I can normally take 5 rods comfortably on my kayak and want to optimize the amount of techniques I can switch to. I'm just a weekend a warrior and not always up to date on lake conditions and patterns so want to be flexible on the water.

    Congrats Matt! One of my favorite videos to this day is the swimbait rod action video from around 10 years ago. It's a great overview and explanation of rod action and flex in a blank. Sure, it's swimbait rods, but the idea words across the board.

    Matt it's great to see you again. Beautiful picture of the kids. Tim was awesome as usual. Now that the pleasantries are done, you really hit it out of the water (pun intended) with this video. I am just an amateur fisherman and you just enlightened me with a ton of knowledge. I have never had anyone explain to me the different types of rods and how they are used with certain type of lures. I am not stuck with one brand of rod and I am finally able to get rods that are somewhat over the $100 range. I will be watching this over again a couple of more times to make sure what I am wanting. By then I may have other questions and ask what type of rod I should be looking to use. Thanks again. You guys are awesome and I look forward to your next video.

    This is great advice that i most certainly will forget before spring time 😆. Congrats on the new baby 🍼. Hope all is well and the rest of the family stays covid 🆓. I would like to see a follow up video on best line type and strength is best for certain rod types/baits. Its such a hard thing for an amateur to figure out when overwhelmed by all the different rod types, line varieties, knots, and lures on the market. A generic rule of thumb would be an awesome go to chart for someone like me that tries to make things work without an abundance of rods. I try to buy at least one new rod a year to bridge the gap so this would be very helpful.

    Wow- that's a huge commitment to say you'll help us all find a specific rod in our price range- thanks guys. I'm looking for two rods in the 200-dollar range- a frog rod specifically for the heavy slop, I already have one for lighter cover or open water- and a swimbait rod large enough to throw like 5-6 inch mag drafts, s waver 168s, stuff in that 1-3-ounce range.

    • @tacticalbassin
      @tacticalbassin  Před 2 lety

      Do you have a brand preference? The swimbait rod will be really easy. Those listed baits don't need a dedicated swimbait rod. I actually prefer to throw them on a 7'2" - 7'9" Heavy with a bit slower tip... more like a jig rod than a swimbait rod.

    Most of my rods are MHF. Some brands are different as far as Mod fast and fast, thanks for the video.

    Great video! I threw that Shower Blows so much I got that 7’2” Medium/Heavy SB Combat Stick. What an excellent rod with that moderate fast action. I found out it’s also a great swim jig rod. What’s your favorite swim jig rod? Congrats Matt!

    Congratulations to you and CC, Matt...and good luck in the future with the TWO girls! J/K, I have two myself, and it was really great. So I've heard you mention the Denali Ryker rods...are they still making good rods and on your best budget rod list?

    Great video Matt! And congrats on the baby! Wondering if you all have tried any favorite rods or googan baits I know if you liked them you would have told us about it but just wondering if they was terrible or just ok
